Anatomy of Taste and Smell

Terminal Objective: After lecture, homework, and a lab spanning 2 classes, students will label and define the anatomical structures of taste and smell. Students will also write a narrative describing the function of the structures. Content Standard:
Arizona Standards: Strand 1: PO 2. Develop questions from observations that transition into testable hypotheses. PO 3. Formulate a testable hypothesis. Concept 4 PO 4. Support conclusions with logical scientific arguments. Anatomy and Physiology Standards: 3251.3.5 Identify the structures and functions of the bodys sensory organs. 3251.3.2 Describe the structure, function, and developmental aspects of neurons and their supporting glial cells. 3251.3.4 Investigate organs for perception of external stimuli and to the maintenance of homeostasis. Common Core Standards: 11-12.RST.9. Synthesize information from a range of sources (e.g., texts, experiments, and simulations) into a coherent understanding of a process, phenomenon, or concept, resolving conflicting information when possible.

Sub-Objectives
Students compare and contrast features of vision, smell, and taste. (Analysis) Students report answers to the class. (Knowledge)

Teaching Strategies
Bellwork: Teacher models dividng a notebook page into 3 sections and instructs them to draw and label the 3 types of sensory neurons we have studied. Bellwork: Teacher calls on groups of students using popsicle sticks to come up to the board and recreate their charts.

Active Student Participation

Bellwork: Students get notebooks out. They draw and label the 3 types of sensory neurons we have studied. Bellwork: Students draw answers on the board and then copy the completed chart in their notebook.

Students gain knowledge of the anatomy of taste. (Knowledge) Students view taste video in preparation for a lad. (Application)

Classwork: Teacher leads power point lectures on taste.

Classwork: Students take notes, participate in questioning and mini-activities.

5 min

Intermittent Closure: Teacher shows two videos detailing taste as well as some of the procedures for the upcoming lab. The video is paused often and students are asked to help explain each section. Classwork: Teacher models procedures and demonstrates the taste lab.

Intermittent Closure: Students watch videos and participate in describing them.

20 min

Students begin taste lab (Analysis)

Classwork: Students create a hypothesis and a method to test it using the demonstrated procedures.

~Full Period (Follo wing day)

Students complete the lab, analyze data, and share conclusions.

Classwork: Teacher monitors student activity, informally assessing student progress and answering questions.

Classwork: Students complete the lab.

Homework: Lab report due date set after the lab is completed. Materials Needed: Science Notebooks Taste Power point Video Supertasters Lab materials Dye, clean microscope slides, swabs, circle reinforcements
