Hello everyone We most warmly welcome the many new families that have joined our school community. We are pleased that you have chosen Mount Lockyer Primary School and will do everything in our power to ensure your child has every opportunity to achieve their potential. I urge you to come in and meet staff, find out about the Passport Program and the many other avenues available to become involved in the education of your children. We believe when strong partnerships are formed and we all work together our kids do better. Due to a large increase in numbers we have an additional class this year. Space was at a premium and this has resulted in the two classroom transportable being established during the school holidays. These classrooms are temporary and will be removed at the conclusion of the school year when our numbers will fall due to both Year 6 and 7 students moving to high school. We are still balancing numbers, they continue to fluctuate and this will result in the classes remaining in draft form for at least one more week. This has necessitated changes to student placement, I realise this can be upsetting but is, unfortunately, unavoidable. We thank all families for your patience and understanding. There will be much occurring this term, to keep track of what is happening please place the attached school planner where it can be easily referred to. This year we welcome four new staff membersMrs Coleen Labuschagne, Year 3/4 Room 3 Miss Nicole Dodson (term 1 relieving Mrs Smith while she is on maternity leave), Year 5/6 Room 11 Mrs Elyce Proud, Pre Primary 1 Fridays Mrs Shelley Kowalski, Pre Primary 1, 2 and 3 on Tuesdays and Thursdays Uniforms It was wonderful to see all students in complete school uniform from day one, thank you for making the effort to ensure your child is fully and correctly equipped for school. Terms 1 and 4 all children must wear a hat. It is strongly recommended this is a broad brimmed hat or a bucket hat not a cap; caps do not protect the back of the neck or the ears. We have a fabulous uniform shop that can supply all your clothing needs, including hats. Children who do not have a hat will be asked to move to a covered or shaded area. Behaviour We have a whole school Behaviour Management Plan in place; the steps are included on the back of every newsletter. I would like to bring your attention to step 4. If your child reaches this level of the plan they will be issued a red card, removed from the class and placed in the Student Support Centre (SSC). You will be contacted and required to attend the school at your earliest convenience. Until such time the child will remain in the SSC to do normal class work and be engaged in behaviour modification strategies. When you attend school you will meet with the class teacher and your child. You are asked remain in the class until your child is settled so they can return to positive, productive learning. This Thursday there will be an assembly run by the Student Councillors, there will not be a class item. Finally it is lovely to be back and see all the old faces and new. I look forward to what I am sure will be an exciting, eventful and productive year. Maxine Augustson Principal

These forms are required for children who may need medication or treatment at school. If your child has a medical condition requiring regular medication, such as ADHD, or emergency treatment such as epilepsy, severe asthma, allergies etc., you will need to complete Health Care Authorization forms. Please contact the school office for the forms.

Note Early close (2:30pm) every second Wednesday. Religious Instruction All children are expected to participate in Religious Instruction. If you do not want your child to participate in religious instruction please send a note to the classroom teacher with this request. Please note students do not automatically become exempt from previous years. A new exemption note needs to be completed for 2014.

Regular attendance will provide your child with the best opportunity to learn and develop important skills. Students who are absent one day a week or more are likely to experience gaps in their learning and may fall behind the other students. It is important to encourage your child to develop regular attendance from a young age to support good habits in primary and secondary school. Should you have any queries regarding the attendance requirements for your child, please dont hesitate to contact your childs class teacher or Barb Jeremic in the office.

My name is Lesley Glorie and I am the Community Health Nurse who visits your school. Community Health Nurses work in schools to promote healthy development and wellbeing so students may reach their full potential. A major part of my work is focused on early intervention and the School Entry Health Assessment program. Community Health Nurses serve as a health contact point for children and their families, providing information, assessment, health counselling and referral. The services provided are free and confidential. If you have a concern about your childs health or development, please contact me on 98427565. School Entry Health Assessment All children in Western Australia are offered a health assessment during their first year of primary school. This usually occurs in kindergarten. A Community Health Nurse will check your childs vision, hearing and general development. A form will be sent in first term. Parents please complete and sign the forms. Please return the form to the school office or class teacher, as soon as possible. For more information, or if you have any concerns, contact the local Community Health Nurse, Lesley Glorie on 98427565.

Head lice Tips for preventing head lice Check your childs hair regularly for head lice and eggs (nits). Use a metal fine tooth nit comb and plenty of hair conditioner applied to the dry hair, to make the task easier and more effective. To help children sit still for this, offer distracting activities, e.g. play a favourite video, provide games, encourage reading, offer a head massage Tie long hair back. Braid long hair and/or put it up if possible. Consider applying hair gel or mousse. These do not prevent or repel lice but may help to keep stray hair strands from contact with other heads. Avoid sharing combs or brushes. Remind your child to avoid head-to-head contact with other children, e.g. when working at the computer with others, or when playing, or hugging. If your child has head lice please notify their teacher. For more information: The Head lice Fact Sheet available from the school Visit www.public.health.wa.gov.au/2/261/2/ head_lice_fact_sheet.pm School Sores (Impetigo) Impetigo is an infection of the skin caused by bacteria. It will usually start with a blister or a group of blisters. The blisters will often pop, weep and form a crust. Small spots may spread outwards from the first spot. The spots are usually itchy. If your child has impetigo they should be checked by a doctor. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics. You should cover the sores with watertight dressing and cut the childs nails to prevent them from scratching. Impetigo is spread very easily, so keep the child home until 24 hours after treatment has begun. Wash hands regularly to prevent spread to others. Bike safety tips Riding a bike is great fun and good exercise for children and teens. Here are a few tips to keep your children safe while cycling: Always supervise children under 10 years of age. Teach your child the rules of the road before they ride by themselves. Riding in the driveway should not be encouraged it is a common place for nasty accidents. Children need to know that driveways can be dangerous. Teach your child to stop at the end of the driveway, look, listen, and think about whether it is safe to cross Make sure your child has a helmet that fits correctly. Helmets should be worn at all times when riding. Parents should set a good example by wearing a helmet themselves. Make sure your childs bike is in good condition. Fit bikes with appropriate reflectors. Make sure your child wears bright coloured clothing when riding. visit

Speech and language disorders A speech disorder is when a child has difficulty pronouncing sounds correctly for their age. If it is not corrected, it can affect the ability to read and write. It may be necessary to seek help for your child if he or she: has trouble moving or coordinating his or her mouth; is six months or more behind the approximate age range for speech sounds; speaks very immaturely compared to other children the same age; gets frustrated about speaking; has hearing loss, and/or; is poorly understood by people who dont know your child.

How to keep your child safe online Protecting your children from harm is just as important online as it is in the real world. As a parent or carer, you can play an important role in helping children have safe and positive experiences online. The internet offers an exciting world of experiences for children and the whole family. It can be entertaining, educational and rewarding. However, using the internet also involves risks and challenges. Children might be exposed to content that is sexually explicit, violent, prohibited or even illegal. They may also experience cyber bullying or be at risk from contact by strangers. Children may - unknowingly or deliberately - share personal information without realising they may be subject to identity theft, or that they are leaving behind content that might not reflect well on them in the future. Talk with your kids about the risks, and answer their questions or concerns about things they find on the Internet. For more information visit: http://www.staysmartonline.gov.au/ home_users/protect_your_children

A language disorder is characterised by delays in learning to talk and understand language. It is different to a speech disorder a speech disorder is when children have difficulty pronouncing words correctly. Its important to remember that children learn to speak at different rates, but if you do have concerns about your childs speech and lanuguage development, talk to your local Community Health Nurse ,Lesley Glorie on 98427565. Go to www.raisingchildren.net.au for more information. Immunisation - is your child attending kindergarten for the first time? MANAGING STUDENT BEHAVIOUR

The key to this approach is that the child is given a choice at each step to follow directions or face increased consequences. Students making GOOD CHOICES are acknowledged for their efforts. For students making POOR CHOICES the following consequences apply ~
STEP 1 Student refuses to follow directions. Verbal warning. STEP 2 Student still refuses to follow directionsIn-class consequence e.g. Time Out STEP 3 Student still refuses to follow directionsOut-of-class consequence e.g. Buddy Class. STEP 4 Student still refuses to follow directionsRED CARD is sent to the office. Parents will be requested to attend school. SUSPENSION Students will be immediately suspended for verbal abuse of staff and/or violence towards staff or students.

WHAT IS BULLYING? Bullying is when a student or group keep picking on another student. They try to hurt them physically or emotionally. The behaviour is deliberate and repeated. A fight or disagreement between equal students is not bullying. HOW TO STOP BULLYING Tell an adult, it is not dobbing to ask for help. Both victim and those bullying will be counselled and supported. Do not be a by-stander; if you witness bullying try to stop it or report it. IF YOU ARE BULLYING Step 1: Warning Step 2: In school isolation and counselling at recess and lunch, parents will be notified Step 3: For continued breaches students will be suspended.

RE-ENTRY FOLLOWING SUSPENSION Students returning from suspension must be accompanied by an adult and will attend the Intervention Centre (Room 20) where an Individual Behaviour Management Plan will be developed and implemented.
