CHAPTER I A. Background One of the most beautiful tourism place in South Sulawesi especially in Makassar is Fort Rotterdam. Many people comes to this place every day, they come to Fort Rotterdam not only to see the historical building but they are also doing so many activity there. To study, and to watch the parade are example of what are they usually do in this tourism place in this case are visitors. Because there are many people that do many activity there, it make me think that how convenient the Fort Rotterdam is?. To answer that question I have do a mini survey about Fort Rotterdam. The survey is talking about the transportation to come to this place, the accommodation, the facilities of this tourism place, the comeliness of this place, the history behind this place, the education values of this place and also the entertainment values of the place. I collected the data by come to this place and ask the visitors randomly. I give few question and write their response. After that, I crosscheck the responses of the visitors by seeing the real situation that happen. What I write here is the conclusion from the mini survey, it is come from the comparison both of the visitors responses and what did I see at that time, I went to this tourism place to do the survey in December, 8 2013. B. Purpose 1. To know about how convenient the Fort Rotterdam is?, As a Tourism Place, and Media To Study The History and Culture of South Sulawesi. 2. As a requirement to pass The English For Tourism Subject. C. Benefit 1. People who read this report will know more and deeply about the tourism place in Makassar especially Fort Rotterdam. 2. This report could be use to find information related with the topic.

CHAPTER II How Convenient The Fort Rotterdam Is? I went to The Fort Rotterdam in December, 8 2013, I started the trip in Daeng Tata Raya Street at 12.00 P.M.

1. Transportation From Daeng Tata Raya street there are several vehicle that people may use to go to The Fort Rotterdam they are public transportation we call them pete-pete, then there are becak-motor bentor, taxy, and ojek. Altough there are many vehicle that can bring us to the place but the cheapest one is by using pete-pete, I will not suggest you to use another vehicle because the cost is much bigger. The cost of using the pete-pete is Rp4.000,- in a single trip, so if the people want to go back from Fort Rotterdam to Daeng Tata Raya street they must pay Rp4.000,- again. It is easy to get the pete-pete, only wait for several minutes and the pete-pete is come. One thing that people must be notice is make sure that you are take the right pete-pete. There are two kind of pete-pete that run around Daeng Tata Raya Street, the first one will goes to the Veteran Street people call them veteran pete-pete and another will bring us to the destination by cross the Cendrawasih Street so that is why the people call them cendrawasih pete-pete dont be worry because they are easy to recognize because there is a sign in face of the pete-pete that make them different just read it, is it veteran or cendrawasih?. I took the pete-pete in Daeng Tata Raya Street near with State University of Makassar campus parangtambung. There is a stopping place for pete-pete in front of the university, people may take the pete-pete there. The trip will take about 15 minutes, but sometime the driver will put the pete-pete out of the way that suppose to be because they want more passenger so the passenger will lost more time because of that it is the lack of this transportation. I Think its better if the Major of Makassar provide some petepete only to serve Fort Rotterdam destination its to make the access to this place going easier. People who come from another city like takalar, jeneponto, bantaeng, bulukumba or sinjai who want to go to the Fort Rotterdam and transit from Mallengkeri Station could use the pete-pete too because its only the same pete-pete. If the visitors has their own vehicle they could drive their vehicle to the Fort Rotterdam, dont worry the fort has a wide area of parking lot but its still crowded in the holiday or in the weekend. 2. The accommodation Most of the local visitors are come to the Fort Rotterdam only for a single day, even though they may stay more than one day they usually staying with their family, they are already make confirmation with their family before they come to Makassar so it will not become a big deal. For international visitors they are also will not get any problem to find a place to stay because there are many hotels around the Fort Rotterdam. Actually they usually hire a travel agent that manage every things include the staying place it self.

3. The facilities In Fort Rotterdam area I didnt see any place to pray like mosque as we know that its really important for muslem visitors and most of the visitors are muslem so I asked the staff of BPCB (Balai Pelestarian Cagar Budaya) and they said that actually there is a small mosque some place in Fort Roterdam, he give me the direction but I didnt see it. We dont need to be worry about the security because near the fort there is a police station that is DIREKTORAT KEPOLISIAN PERAIRAN POLDA SULSEL, I ask the staff again he said that until that time there were no any criminal case that happen in the fort. Next we can see that there are many garbage can around the Fort Rotterdam but the rubbish still spread in everywhere. I believe that its because the visitors who throw their garbage not in the right place. I asked the staff again and he said that actually there are some people who work to clean the Fort Rotterdam but they are not working in sunday so I didnt see them at that time. Its quite hot at that noon, few of the visitors said that its better if there are some dense trees planted around there so the visitors could standing under the trees. There is also a handicraft shop in the fort, the visitors could buy traditional things in here such as sarung, bracelet, T-shirt, ashtray, decoration, and many more. About the toilet its good enough, but its still average. However its still better than nothing. 4. The comeliness Although the fort is dirty at that time but the fort still has such a beautiful view, there are many colorful flowers that planted there. Also there are garden which constructed in very beautiful shape. The up-hill part you can see the green grass mixed with the flowers, you can see the street from the highest place. The shape of the fort it self is inspired by the tortoise. Tortoise is animal which can live in the land and also in the sea, its meaning that the Gowa-Tallo kingdom who was the owner of the Fort was really powerful at that time both in the sea and in the land. Now the fort become a really great view. However there are several people who has desire to spoil the view by throwing the garbage not in the right place then they are scrawling the wall with unimportant word and its really bad. After that there are another beautiful breaker that surrounding the Fort Rotterdam they are the building. The building is really high so if we want to see the view from the hill we cant see widely because the building is not allow us. 5. The history value and the hidden tunnel Beside the history value that left in the design and in the building it self the history value also come from the museum. There is a museum in this fort, the name of the museum is La Galigo Museum, we can see traditional things of South Sulawesi there. To enter the museum we only pay about Rp.10.000,per person. The visitors will not getting lost to find the museum, because its easy to be find, its only near the gate.

Many people said that there is a hidden tunnel somewhere in the fort, I asked the owner of the handicraft shop about the issue and he said that its only a myth and the tunnel it self is never exist. Then Im asked the staff of the fort and he said that he dont know where is the tunnel he tell me the one who may could tell me where is the tunnel is the tourist guide but I didnt know who is the guide so I tried to find the tunnel by my self and the result is I was fail to find it. 6. The education values In The Fort Rotterdam we are not only could enjoy the beautiful view, but we can also study there. The first media to study is The La Galigo Museum, sure we can study the South Sulawesi culture in the museum. The fort is frequently use for education purpose. When I came to the fort I saw there is an exhibition that hold at that time in one of the building there. The exhibition is Pameran Khazanah Budaya Islam Sulawesi Selatan 2013 again we can learn the culture of South Sulawesi people in religion context, in this case is islam religion. The cost to enter and see the exhibition is about Rp5000,- per person. Many student such as student from school and also college student are coming to the fort to study together. They made some group or club then they study there. At least there is two biggest club in the fort the fist one is Benteng Panynyua English Club (BPEC) most of their member are college students. The second one is The Pioneer the member of the club are coming from the school students. Booth of the club or group or community are open to everyone so everybody could join the group and study together they usually study about English language. Why the student choose the fort to study is because in the fort they could meet with the foreigner visitor so they could practice their English language skill with them. At least I saw four foreigner visitors when I came to the fort. 7. The entertainment values Many event are hold in Fort Rotterdam, one of them is Makassar Art Moment that recently hold few months ago. Its a big celebration, there are many performance that visitors could see such as traditional dance and traditional music. The performance is not only in the fort but also showed in the street around the fort. Its a greatly big annaul event.
