Cthul-B-Que
a game for 2 to 5 chefs by Jonathan A. Leistiko inspired by an idea from Malisa DiGiacomo and Ben Gibbs Those Iron Chef guys were wimps. Their ingredients never fought back, and only the giant squid had a chance of driving them insane. But youre not wimps. Youre up to the challenge of non-euclidean food preparation. For 2 to 5 chefs.

Story
Youre competing in the annual Miskatonic Bar-B-Que Cook-Off. Youre racing against your opponents to transform freshly-summoned monsters into mouth-watering dishes Be strong, dont freak out, and remember the cook-offs motto: Eat Cthulhu before Cthuhu eats you!

You Need
A bunch of 6-sided dice. About 12 should suffice. Assorted tokens. Coins, beads, or ancient runes from Ryleh work well. A deck of Cthul-B-Que cards. A Cthul-B-Que Chef tracker and a Chef pawn for each player. A Yellow Sign totem.

Setting Up
Shuffle the deck. Put the deck, tokens, dice, and Yellow Sign totem where everyone can reach them. Give each player a Chef pawn and a randomlyselected Chef tracker. Youre a chef. Chefs have two statistics: Cooking and Sanity. Keep track of them with your Chef tracker. Take seven tokens. Put one token in Coking and one in Sanity. You may put each of your remaining tokens in Cooking or Sanity. Draw one card for every point of Sanity you have.

Object
Have the most delectable Mythosthemed dishes in your Serving Area at the end of the game.

Example: Your chef is Phillip Joshi, so youll have a slight advantage against Cosmic Monsters. You want Phillip to be a good chef whos a little on the edge: You mark Cooking with 5 tokens, mark Sanity with 2 tokens, then draw 2 cards. The Featured Ingredient Turn the top card of the deck face-up. Do this until you reveal a Monster card with a Recipe on it. Set this Monster to the side of the table where everyone can see it. Shuffle all other cards you turned face-up back in to the deck. The Monster youve set aside is the Featured Ingredient for the game. You can read more about the Featured Ingredient in Cooking. For now, know that completing dishes with the Featured Ingredient helps you win the game, but is more difficult.

General Rules for Play

If a player or Monster ever has to roll fewer than one die, roll just one die. When you discard a Monster from your hand, put it in play in the middle of the table (the Kitchen) instead of the discard pile. All Monsters and recipes (and some other cards) have descriptive adjectives in (parentheses) near the top of the card. You can discard a card from your hand that shares one or more parenthetical adjectives with a Monster to let the Monster do one of the following: Roll an extra die before rolling in combat. Re-roll all dice during combat or when its being summoned. Deal an extra point of damage when it wins combat. If several chefs want to discard a card, start to the left of the acting chef and proceed to the left. If you pass, you may not discard a card unless another player discards a card. If all players pass consecutively, no one may play another card; continue the game normally.

Tests During the game youll summon Monsters, cook and fight Monsters, challenge other chefs, and cast spells. Youll use your statistics, Cooking and Sanity, to do this. To test a statistic, roll one die for every token you have in that statistic. Roll one fewer die for each Fatigue token you have. Group dice that show the same number together and add them. The highest single die or sum is your result. Example continued: Your chefs Cooking is 5, so you roll 5 dice for cooking tests. If you roll a 6, 5, 3, 3, and 5 for a cooking test, whats the result? The highest total is the two fives, for a result of 10. Later in the game, your Cooking is 4 and you have 4 Fatigue tokens. How many dice do you roll for a cooking test? You still get to roll 1 die.

Tests are opposed rolls. Usually youll be testing against Monsters and spells. The player to your left gets to roll a number of dice equal to the Threat, Horror, or what the spell indicates (If its X you pick the number X stands for.) and tally them in the same fashion. Remember that a Monster with counters on it rolls one fewer die for every counter it has on it. The highest result wins. If you win, you get the effect indicated for winning. If you lose, you get the effect indicated for losing. This usually means youll remove a token from the statistic youre testing. If you tie, take the effect for losing. If youre still sane and conscious after that, take the effect of winning (unless told to do otherwise).

Your Chef Specialty Each chef has a specialty. If you make a cooking or sanity roll against a Monster and you dont like that roll, check the descriptive adjectives on that Monster. If one of them matches your specialty, you can re-roll all dice you rolled, then gain a Fatigue token (or gain Fatigue token, then re-roll if youre The Mysterious Stranger). You can use your Chef Specialty to take as many consecutive re-rolls as you wish to. Remember that you roll one fewer die for every Fatigue token you have. Example continued: Your chef is Phillip Joshi. Your specialty is Cosmic Monsters. Pretend that youre cooking a Mi-Go. Its Threat is 3. Your Cooking is 5. You roll 4, 4, 2, 2, and 2 and it rolls 3, 3, and 3. Youre losing, 8 to 9. You use your specialty to re-roll; get 6, 4, 3, 2, and 1; and gain Fatigue token. Youre losing 6 to 9 now. You use your specialty to re-roll again, rolling one fewer die; get 6, 6, 3, and 1; and gain a Fatigue token. Now youre winning, 12 to 9.

Play
Play is semi-simultaneous. All players complete the first phase before moving on to the second phase, and so on. Each turn consists of 6 phases: 1. Convalesce 2. Play a Card 3. (Optional) Take an Action 4. (Optional) Discard a Card 5. Draw Cards 6. (Optional) Crowd Favorite 7. End Your Turn The player with the Yellow Sign totem goes first. Play passes to the left. If no one controls the Yellow Sign totem, the player with the highest Cooking goes first. Highest Sanity resolves ties. Resolve further ties by rolling 2 dice; highest roll goes first.

1. Convalesce Insanity and The Asylum: When your Sanity hits zero, you are immediately sent to the Asylum. Put your Chef pawn on your tracker. If you are in the Asylum at the start of your turn: Increase your Sanity by one, OR roll two dice and increase your Sanity by one for each die that rolls 4 or greater. Next, draw 7 cards. Put them back in any order. If your Sanity is greater than zero, you may: a) Declare that youre leaving the Asylum and take the rest of your turn normally. b) Stay in the Asylum. Do not participate in phase 2 or 3 (Play a Card or Take an Action). Traction and The Hospital: When your Cooking hits zero, you are immediately sent to the Hospital to recover. Put your Chef pawn on your tracker.

If youre in the Hospital at the start of your turn: Increase your Cooking by one, OR roll two dice and increase your Cooking by one for each die that rolls 4 or greater. If your Cooking is greater than zero, you may: a) Declare that youre leaving the Hospital and take the rest of your turn normally. b) Stay in the Hospital. Do not participate in phase 2 or 3 (Play a Card or Take an Action). While youre in the Hospital, you can discard a card from your hand to make another player re-roll the die or dice he or she just rolled that show the lowest number (Cooking, Monster, etc.). 2. Play a Card There are four different kinds of cards: Monsters, Items, Spells, and Assistants. You must play a card if you are able to. If you can not play a card, show your hand of cards to another player and let play pass to the next player.

Monsters: When you summon (play) a Monster, you can put it: * Where everyone can reach it - that area is the Kitchen. * In front of you in your summoning circle. If theres already a Monster in your summoning circle, you must Cook, Fight, or otherwise remove that Monster before another Monster can go there. * In front of another player in their summoning circle. You cant do this if their summoning circle is occupied. If you played the Monster in a summoning circle, test your Sanity against its Horror. If you lose the test, lose a point of Sanity. If you win the test and the Monsters Horror is equal to or greater than your Sanity, gain a point of Sanity. Whether you win or lose, the Monster stays in your summoning circle. After you summon a Monster, you may put your Chef pawn on it.

Example continued: Youve got a hankerin for some Byakhee brisket. Fortunately, you have a Byakhee in your hand. You dont want other chefs to have access to your monster, so you summon it to your summoning circle. You put it in your summoning circle and roll a 3 and 4 for your Sanity test. The Byakhee (Horror 1) rolls a 6. You failed the Sanity test. You could use your chefs Cosmic specialty to reroll, but you choose not to. The Fatigue token youd gain would make the Byakhee too hard to cook this turn. You successfully summoned the Byakhee, but lost one point of Sanity. You choose to put your Chef pawn on the Byakhee. Spells: You can play a Spell on anyone in the game yourself or someone else. Spells you have in play only take effect if you successfully cast them. You may not have more Spells in play than your Sanity. If you ever have

more Spells than your Sanity, select and discard Spells until you have as many Spells as your Sanity. Items & Assistants: You can play an Item or an Assistant on anyone in the game yourself or someone else. Items and Assistants take effect as soon as they enter play. The sum total of your Items and Assistants in play may not be greater than your Sanity. If you ever have more Items and Assistants than your Sanity, select and discard Items and Assistants until you have as many Items and Assistants as your Sanity. During play, you can discard one of your Assistants from play or from your hand to: * Re-roll some or all dice in a roll you just made * Prevent the loss of a point of Cooking.

3. Take an Action (Optional) You may take one action. The actions you can take are: * Cook a Monster * Fight a Monster * Challenge a Player * Fight a Player * Cast a Spell * Rest (discard cards, lose Fatigue) You can attempt to Cook or Fight any Monster in the Kitchen that doesnt have a Chef pawn on it, or the Monster in your summoning circle. Fighting is easier than Cooking, but damages the flesh of the non-Euclidian beasties. Dont fight your would-be meals if you want the judges to like em!

Cook a Monster: 1. Move your Chef pawn to the Monster youre about to cook. If you did not have to move your Chef pawn, skip step 2. 2. Stare into the face of mind-bending horror and prepare to saut it. Test your Sanity vs. the Monsters Horror. If you fail, lose a point of Sanity. Example, continued: Theres a Deep One in the Kitchen from the player before you, but youd rather cook the Byakhee you summoned. Your Sanity and the Byakhees Horror are both 1. Fortunately, you dont have to test your Sanity because you put your pawn on the Byakhee when you summoned it. If you did have to make the test and you failed it, you would lose your last point of Sanity and go insane. Thatd be a lousy way to start your first turn. 3. Use a recipe. Most Monster cards double as recipes. If you have a card with a recipe on it, you can use it if the Monster youre cooking matches the Monster on the Monster portion of the

recipe card. Some recipes like Mythos Meatloaf, Dark Young Dumplings, and Cthulhu Cutlets match more than one kind of Monster. To use a recipe, put it under the Monster youre about to cook. This attaches the recipe to the Monster. When you cook a monster with a recipe attached to it, you may re-roll one Cooking die in every Cooking roll you make when cooking that specific Monster. The recipe also adds one star to the Monsters delectability when its a dish in your Serving Area. Example, continued: You want to cook the Byakhee because you have another Byakhee card in your hand. You can use this extra card as a recipe. Before you start cooking, you put the Byakhee card in your hand under the Byahkee youre about to cook, attaching it as a recipe. A Monster may only have one recipe attached to it. Once a recipe is attached, you may not detach it unless specifically told otherwise. 4. Get Cookin! Test your Cooking against the Monsters Threat. Remember that a Monster with

counters on it rolls one fewer die for every counter it has on it. If you lose, lose a point of Cooking. If you tie, lose a point of Cooking. If youre still conscious after that, put one cooking counter on the Monster. If you win, put a cooking counter on the Monster for every 2 points (or fraction thereof) you beat the Monster by. Example, continued: Time to get cookin! Your Cooking is 5, the Byakhees Threat is 5. You roll a 6, 5, 4, 4, and 2. The Byakhee rolls a 6, 5, 3, 3, and 3. Youre about to lose, 8 to 9, but the recipe lets you reroll one die. You choose to re-roll your 2 and get a 6. Your final total is 12, while the Byakhees is 8. You get to put two cooking counters on it. 5. Is It Ready?: If the number of counters on the Monster is less than its Threat, your action is complete:. Example, continued: The Byakhee has 2 cooking counters on it, and its Threat is 5. Its not completely cooked yet. Your action is complete.

If the number of counters on the monster equals or exceeds the Monsters Threat, youve defeated it. Take the Yellow Sign totem and choose one of the following: Remove all counters on the Monster and put it back in the Kitchen. Turn the Monster into a dish: Remove its cooking counters & put it under your chef tracker so its recipe is visible. Dishes under your chef tracker are in your Serving Area. Finish the dish off with the Featured Ingredient: Remove all your Fatigue tokens. Test your Sanity against the Featured Ingredients Horror. If you fail, lose a point of Sanity, turn your cooked Monster into a dish, and end your action. If you win, test your Cooking against the Featured Ingredients Threat. If you fail, lose a point of Cooking, turn your cooked Monster into a dish, and end your action. If you win you may put a card from your hand face-down under the dish. This card is now a Featured Ingredient card. Turn the Monster into a dish like you normally would and move it to your Serving Area.

The Yellow Sign totem:

If you have this totem, you may spend it at any time to force all dice in a roll to be re-rolled. Give this totem to the player who is rerolling. If youre making yourself re-roll, the totem becomes uncontrolled. If you have this totem at the start of your turn you may let it become uncontrolled to add a token to any players Cooking or Sanity, or remove all of any players Fatigue tokens.

Youve defeated the Monster. You take the Yellow Sign totem and choose to turn the Byakhee into a dish instead of sending it back to the Kitchen or trying to add Deep One (the Featured Ingredient). Deep Ones are pretty easy, but you still only have one point of Sanity, and you dont have a card in hand to place face-down as a Featured Ingredient card if you succeeded (You had to play your only card during the Play a Card phase.). Hopefully, no-one else will finish cooking a Monster this turn. That way, you can keep the Yellow Sign totem and swap it for a point of Sanity at the start of the next turn. Fighting a Monster: If your would-be entre gets out of control, its time to put down the tenderizing mallet and pick up the shotgun. Fighting a Monster follows the same steps as Cooking a Monster, with these exceptions: You get to ignore any Fatigue tokens you have.

Example, continued: Its your next action. No-one tried to take your Byakhee away from you because youre in your summoning circle. You roll 5 dice for Cooking, and the Byakhee rolls 3 dice (Threat 5 minus 2 for the cooking counters). You roll 6, 5, 5, 4, and 1. The Byakhee rolls 6, 4, and 2. Youre winning, 10 to 6, but you want to see if you can do better. You use the recipe to re-roll the 1 and get a 5. Your final total is 15. You beat the Byakhee by 9 and get to put 5 cooking counters on it.

You may roll one extra die. Recipes do not let you re-roll. The tokens you put on the Monster are damage counters instead of cooking counters. Challenge a Player: You cant cook a Monster in the Kitchen if it has another players Chef pawn on it, but you can Challenge that player for the right to cook that Monster. To challenge another player, put your Chef pawn next to the Monster and tell the other player that youre challenging his or her cooking skills. If youre being challenged, you can let the challenger win the challenge right now or you can accept the challenge and keep your pawn on the Monster. If the challenge continues, test your Cooking against your opponent. This counts as Cooking, so both players can use bonuses from Items that boost cooking. If you win, the loser gains a Fatigue token for every 2 points (or fraction thereof) you beat him or her

by. If you tie, you each get a Fatigue token. If youre defending and you have more Fatigue tokens than Cooking tokens, you you lose the challenge. Otherwise, you can concede and let your opponent win or you can stay and continue the challenge. If youre challenging and your opponent does not concede, follow the same rules and choose whether to concede or continue. If the challenge continues, repeat the process (Resolve another Cooking test and see if anyone concedes.). If youre challenging and you lose the challenge, your action ends. If youre challenging and you win, your opponent must return his or her Chef pawn to his or her summoning circle. You may immediately take a Cooking or Fighting action against that Monster.

Fight a Player: Fighting a player is the same as challenging a player, with the following exceptions: Tell the other player that youre fighting for the right to cook that Monster. Youre fighting each other. This means that both players ignore Fatigue, roll one extra die, and may use Items that increase fight scores. Items that only increase cooking scores do not count. Instead of gaining Fatigue tokens, you lose one Cooking tokens for every 2 points (or fraction thereof) youre beaten by. If you tie, you each lose a Cooking token. If you run out of Cooking tokens, you dont just lose the fight, you go to the Hospital!

Cast a Spell: You may use your action to cast one spell. You can only cast spells you have in play. Follow the instructions on the spell. If the spell refers to X, you pick the number X stands for. You may also cast one spell each turn during one other players action. Unless the spell indicates otherwise, you can only cast a spell at the start or end of another players action. If you cast a spell during another players action, you gain a Fatigue token after you cast the spell. Rest: You may use your action to rest. Remove all Fatigue tokens from your chef tracker. You may discard all of your cards if you want to. You must discard all of your cards or none of them. You cant choose to keep some of them. Remember: When you discard a Monster, put it in play in the Kitchen instead of the discard pile.

4. Discard a Card (Optional) You may take a card from your hand and put it on the discard pile. If it is a Monster, you must put it in the Kitchen instead. 5. Draw Cards If you have fewer cards than your Sanity, draw until you have as many cards as your Sanity. If the deck runs out of cards and you need to draw more cards, shuffle the discards to create a new draw deck, add a point to your Cooking or Sanity, and continue playing normally. Example continued: Your Sanity is 1 and youre out of cards, so you draw one card. Fortunately, no one else cooked a Monster this turn. You make a metal note to spend the Yellow Sign totem to raise your Sanity at the start of the next turn to raise your Sanity to 2.

6. Crowd Favorite (Optional) If any player asks to, hold a vote for the audiences favorite chef. In turn order, each player votes out loud for one other player who made this past turn the most fun to play. You can not vote for yourself. If you get the most votes, you gain a Cooking or Sanity token (your choice). If theres a tie, each tied player gains a point of Cooking or Sanity (his or her choice).

7. End the Turn At the end of the turn, you may swap cards in hand and cards in play with other players. You also may trade positions with another players Chef pawn. If this would put a Chef pawn in another chefs summoning circle, put that Chef pawn in its own summoning circle. Cards attached to a swapped card and counters on a swapped card move with the card. You may not swap dishes in your Serving Area. You may not swap a Monster out of your summoning circle. All trades require the agreement of all players involved. This continues until a player asks for the turn to end. You have 30 seconds to finish any trades before the turn ends.

Winning
How many dishes do you need in your Serving Area to end the game? It depends on how many chefs are competing: If you have two players, you need to have five dishes. If you have three players, you need to have four dishes. If you have four or five players, you need to have three dishes. When you have this many or more dishes with different names in your Serving Area at the start of a turn, you can declare that youre ready to serve your meal. Note: A dish with a recipe counts as one dish. The name of a dish with a recipe attached to it is the name of the recipe thats attached to it. If you have a Byakhee in your Serving Area with a Mythos Meatloaf recipe attached to it, it counts as Mythos Meatloaf. The name of a dish without a recipe attached to it is the name of the recipe printed on that dish. If you have a Byakhee in your Serving Area without

a recipe attached to it, it counts as Byakhee Brisket. This counts as a dish with a different name from the Mythos Meatloaf, even though both dishes were made with Byakhee. Special Ingredients do not count as dishes (since they do not have recipes printed on them). This is the last turn. At the end of the turn: Count the Delectability stars on each dish in your Serving Area. Add stars for attached recipes. Add the Featured Ingredients stars for each Featured Ingredient card in your Serving Area. Remember to include bonus stars from your Special Ingredients. Add your Sanity. Subtract the number of damage counters on Monsters in your Serving Area. If you have the highest total, you win the game, along with the respect and admiration of your peers. Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn!

Example, continued: Later in the game, you have a Byakhee with a Byakhee Brisket recipe attached to it, a Deep One, a Flying Polyp with the Dark Young Dumplings recipe attached to it, and Fire Vampires in your Serving Area. You also have Space Mead in play. For purposes of ending the game, you have three dishes on your Serving Area: Byakhee Brisket, Deep One Fillet, and Dark Young Dumplings made with Flying Polyp. Youre playing with 4 players, so this is enough to end the game. The Byakhee is worth 3 stars, plus 1 for the recipe. The Deep One is worth 1 star. The Flying Polyp is worth 2 stars, plus 2 more for the Dark Young Dumplings recipe (This recipe says that its worth 2 stars when used with a Monster of Horror 4 or greater.). The Space Mead says that it counts as a 3-star dish at the end of the game. The Fire Vampires add one star to every dish you have. Thats another 4 stars. You also have 2 Sanity. You end the game with a total of 18 stars.

Tips For Play

How can you increase your Cooking or Sanity without convalescence? 1. Successfully summon a Monster to your summoning circle with a Horror thats equal to or greater than your Sanity. This raises your Sanity by one. 2. Successfully cook or fight a Monster until its beaten. This gives you the Yellow Sign totem. You can spend the Yellow Sign totem at the start of your turn to raise your Cooking or Sanity. 3. Draw enough cards to force the deck to be reshuffled while youre drawing cards. This lets you raise your Cooking or your Sanity by one. 4. Make the game fun to play and call for a Crowd Favorite vote. If youre playing your character to the hilt, being funny, and the people youre playing with arent complete neenerheads, youll win the vote. Congrats! You just earned a point of Cooking or Sanity.

I got the Yellow Sign. Now what? The Yellow Sign Totem is a powerful tool. If you have the Yellow Sign totem, you can use it to screw around with other players, but you can also bribe them with it to get stuff from them: Youre about to go insane from botching up that Mi-Go summoning. Ill make you re-roll if you give me your Yellow Sign Spatula at the end of the turn. Im stuck in the Hospital and/or Asylum and it stinks. Its boring and theres nothing for me to do. When youre in the Asylum, you have a significant amount of control over who gets what cards, as long as you can tell whos going to draw first. Use this power to make deals for good cards: Hey, theres three really good cards coming up. If you give me one of the three when I get out, Ill make sure you get the other two. When youre in the Hospital, you get to wield power of a different sort. You can make players re-roll whats probably their worst die or dice, or you can help players rolling for Monsters or Spells get harder rolls to

beat. Either way, theres opportunity for a little extortion: You know, if that 1 you rolled was a 4 or a 6, thatd boost your coking total just enough for you to finish that Monster. Give me your Voorish rolling pin at the end of the turn and Ill make you re-roll it. Or... Boy, Cthulhu rolled really badly for that Fear test. Itd be a shame if it got to re-roll those three 2s, cause youd go completely insane and lose your flame thrower and your Invisibility spell. Speaking of which: Have I ever mentioned how much I like that spell?

Example of Play
Going clockwise around the table are Ann, Bob, Cora, and Dan. Theyre about to start their third turn. Ann has 3 Sanity, 3 Cooking, and a derringer (+2 when fighting). Ann also cooked a Deep One last turn, so she has the Yellow Sign totem. Bobs first two turns didnt go so well. Bob is in the Asylum with 0 Sanity, 6 Cooking, and a Shoggoth in his Summoning Circle. Cora has 4 Sanity and 3 Cooking. She played an Elder Sign spell last turn and cast it successfully, so it has 2 sign tokens on it. Dan has 2 Sanity and 3 Cooking. Ann has the Yellow Sign totem. At the start of the turn, she lets the Yellow Sign totem become uncontrolled and gains a point of Cooking, putting her at 4.

1. Convalesce Ann has the highest Cooking and would start this phase, but Bob is the only player convalescing. Bob rolls two dice. He rolls a 4 and 5, and gains 2 Sanity for a total of 2. Next, he draws 7 cards, rearranges them, and puts them back. Bob chooses to stay in the Asylum. Because Bob is staying in the Asylum, he can not play a card or take an action this turn.

2. Play a Card Ann also starts this phase. Ann plays a Mi-Go to her Summoning Circle. She tests her Sanity against its Horror and wins. Dan discards a Fire Vampire card to the Kitchen to make the Mi-Go re-roll; he can do this because Fire Vampires and Mi-Go share the adjective (Cosmic). The MiGo re-rolls, Ann still wins, and puts her Chef pawn on it. The Mi-Go's Horror of 3 is equal to Ann's Sanity of 3, so she gains a point of Sanity for a total of 4. Bob is in the Asylum, so he gibbers briefly and gets skipped. Cora plays a Voorish rolling pin for +1 die when cooking. Dan plays a flame thrower for +3 dice when cooking or fighting. Dan is out of cards now.

3. Take an Action (Optional) Ann starts the phase. There's a Byakhee in the Kitchen that she wants to cook. Ann moves her Chef pawn to the Byakhee. Ann moved to the Byakhee this turn, so she tests her Sanity against its Horror and succeeds. Before cooking, she attaches a Mythos Meatloaf recipe to the Byakhee. Ann rolls her 4 Cooking dice against the Byakhee's 5 Threat dice. Ann gets a total of 9. The Byakhee gets a total of 6. Ann puts 2 cooking counters on it and her action ends. Anns chef is Allison Crow, the Brutish chef. She could have chosen to re-roll her dice then gain a Fatigue token, but she was happy enough with how the roll turned out. Bob is in the Asylum. He mentions that the green crayons they hand out during craft time taste better than the other ones. Everyone chuckles, and Bob skips his action. Cora has an Elder Sign spell in play with two sign tokens on it. She uses her action to cast it again. She tests her Sanity against 2 dice and wins. Cora adds 2 more sign tokens to the

spell, for a total of 4. Dan sees that he could finish off Anns Byakhee in one shot, since he has 3 Cooking and a flame thrower (for a total of 6 Cooking dice). However, Ann has 4 Cooking dice and a derringer, so she gets 6 dice when fighting. Dan figures Ann will retreat instead of fight, and moves his Chef pawn next to Ann's Byakhee. Dan declares that hes fighting Ann to cook the Byakhee. Ann could concede, move her pawn off, and let Dan cook the Byakhee, but she doesn't want to give up a Monster she played a recipe on. "Bring it on, chump," she sneers. Ann and Dan each roll 7 dice (Ann gets 4 Cooking dice plus 2 from her derringer, plus 1 for fighting. Dan gets 3 Cooking dice plus 3 from the flame thrower, plus 1 for fighting.) for the fight and tie, 8 to 8. Each one loses a point of Cooking and Dan has 2 uses left for his flame thrower. Ann is the defender and must declare if she is conceding or fighting. Ann does not concede. Dan also does not concede. Ann and Dan each roll 6 dice and and Dan beats Ann, 10 to 4. Ann loses her last 3 points of cooking and goes to

the Hospital. Now Dan can try to cook the Byakhee. Dan has one use left for his flame thrower and 2 points of Cooking. Dan puts his Chef pawn on the Byakhee, tests his Sanity against the Byakhee's Horror, and loses, 5 to 4. Dan loses a point of Sanity and is down to 1. Dan rolls 5 dice (2 Cooking + 3 for the flame thrower) against the Byakhee's 3 dice (Threat 5, less 2 for the cooking counters Ann put on it). Dan gets a total of 12. The Byakhee gets a total of 4. Dan doesnt need the re-roll from the recipe, so he doesnt use it. Dan puts one damage counter on the Byakhee (because of the flame thrower) and 3 cooking counters on it. Dan successfully cooked the Byakhee, The flame thrower is out of fuel, so he discards it. Dan cant try to finish off the Byakhee dish with the Featured Ingredient (Flying Polyp), because hes out of cards. He's pretty sure he'd fail the Sanity test or the Cooking test anyway. Dan removes the cooking counters, keeps the damage counter, moves the Byakhee along with its

recipe to his Serving Area, and claims the Yellow Sign totem. At the end of Dan's action, Cora says she's casting a spell out of turn and casts Elder Sign again. She tests her Sanity against 2 dice, wins, adds 2 more sign tokens to the spell (for a total of 6!), and gains a Fatigue token for casting out of turn. 4. Discard a Card (Optional) Dan has the Yellow Sign totem, so he starts this phase. Dan does not discard because he's out of cards. Ann glares menacingly at Dan and puts Invisibility in the discard pile. Bob also has no cards and does not discard. Cora discards a Dark Young to the Kitchen.

5. Draw Cards Dan also starts this phase. Dan has 1 Sanity and no cards. He draws 1 card. Ann has 3 Sanity and no cards. She draws 3 cards. Bob has 2 Sanity and no cards. He draws 2 cards. He thought hed be drawing the 4th and 5th cards, so he doesn't get the Necrocookbookicon he'd stacked the deck with during Convalescence (Ann got it instead), but he does get the Shining Trapezohedron salt & pepper shakers he set up. Cora has 4 Sanity and two cards. She draws 2 cards.

6. Crowd Favorite (Optional) Bob requests a Crowd Favorite vote. Dan stats the voting. Dan votes for Bob because he doesnt want to vote for Ann and Cora is already in the best position. Ann votes for Bob because shes still upset at Dan and doesnt want to boost Cora further. Bob votes for Ann because he wants her to vote for him in the future and he feels just a little sorry for her. He also knows that if she ties with him for votes, it wont hurt him. Cora votes for Bob because she thought his comment on crayons was funny. Hey, says Ann, Why didnt you vote for me? Cora smiles sweetly and says, Its simple, really. The rules say to vote for the person who made the game most fun this turn. Thats Bob, not you. Ann sticks her tongue out at Cora and Bob wins the vote. Bob chooses to gain a point of Sanity, putting him at 3 Sanity.

7. End the Turn The turn ends. Ann is in the Hospital with 4 Sanity, 0 Cooking, and a derringer. Bob is in the Asylum with 3 Sanity and 6 Cooking. Cora has 4 Sanity, 3 Cooking, 1 Fatigue, a Voorish rolling pin, and a fairly powerful Elder Sign. Dan contemplates his Sanity (1 point) and Cooking (2 points) and wonders if it was worth it for a Byakhee with 3 points of delectability (3 points + 1 for the recipe, -1 for the damage counter).

it. You dont have to test Sanity because you summoned it to the kitchen instead of your summoning circle. For your action, you announce that youre trying to cook Cthulhu (Threat: 8, Horror: 5). You dont have to test Sanity because your Chef pawn was on Great Cthulhu at the start of your cooking action. Dark Young can be used as a recipe on any Monster with Horror of 4 or greater. You attach Dark Young to Great Cthulhu as a recipe. You get to roll 8 dice: 4 for Cooking, 1 for the Voorish rolling pin, and 3 for the flame thrower. Pat gets to roll 8 dice for Great Cthulhu. You get 6, 6, 4, 4, 3, 1, 1, and 1. Pat gets 5, 4, 4, 3, 2, 2, 1, and 1. Youre winning, 12 to 8. Pat discards a Deep One to the kitchen to make Great Cthulhu re-roll. Pat rerolls and gets 5, 4, 4, 4, 3, 3, 2, and 1. Now youre tied, 12 to 12. You use the single die re-roll from the recipe to re-roll one of your 1s and get another 4. Youre still tied 12 to 12.

Assistants can be discarded to re-roll some or all of the dice in a roll you just made. You discard the Sushi Chef and re-roll your 3 and your 1. You get two 2s. Its still 12 to 12. As Chef Aquatic, you can re-roll your Cooking dice against an Aquatic Monster, then gain a Fatigue token. Great Cthulhu is Aquatic, so you reroll all of your dice and get an astonishing 6, 6, 6, 6, 4, 1, 1, and 1. Youre winning, 24 to 12. Pat discards a Mythos Meatloaf recipe to make Great Cthulhu re-roll once more and gets 6, 5, 5, 5, 5, 2, 2, and 2. Youre winning, 24 to 20. You could re-roll with your chef specialty, but you really dont want reroll because you have a Fatigue token, so youd be rolling one fewer die. Pat is all out of cards too, so all the re-rolls are done. You you get to put 2 counters on Great Cthulhu. The first one has to be a damage counter, because youre using the flame thrower, but the second one is a cooking counter. Once thats done, you end your action.

Example of Play #2
Youre in a 2-player game with Pat. Youre playing Allison Chambers, Chef Aquatic. You have Cooking: 4 and Sanity: 3. You have a Voorish rolling pin (+1 Cooking) and a flame thrower (+3 Cooking, usable 3 times). You have a Sushi Chef, Great Cthulhu, and a Dark Young in your hand. You summon Great Cthulhu to the kitchen and place your Chef pawn on
