GAUGE: 9 1/2 sts + 14 rnds = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter Block pattern. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. STITCH EXPLANATION: kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st 1 st increased. NOTES: 1. Hat is worked in the rnd on double pointed needles. 2. Garter Block st is worked in 2 colors. Carry color not in use across wrong side of work. Pick up new color from under old color.

HAT With A, cast on 48 sts. Divide sts onto 4 needles (12 sts per needle). Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts. Rnds 1-7: *K2, p2; rep from * around. Rnd 8: (K2, p2) 4 times, kfb, k1, p2, (k2, p2) 3 times, kfb, k1, p2, (k2, p2) 3 times - 50 sts at the end of this rnd. Knit 1 rnd. Beg Garter Block Pattern

Rnds 1 and 3: *With B, k5; with A, k5; rep from * around. Rnds 2 and 4: *With B, p5; with A, p5; rep from * around. Rnds 5 and 6: With A, knit. Rep rnds 1-6 twice more. With A, knit 1 rnd. Cut A. Divide sts onto 2 double pointed needles (25 sts on each needle). With RS of work facing outwards, hold both needles in one hand. With 3rd needle and B, *knit together 1 st from each needle; rep from * across - 25 sts at the end of this row. Working back and forth in rows with B, knit 2 rows. Bind off as if to knit. FINISHING Weave in ends.
