Large Centrifugal Pumps Lab 1) Scope This experiment is designed to provide students experience with centrifugal pumps.

The centrifugal pump is by far the most common device used to move fluids. Pumps are widely used in industry, power generation, chemical manufacturing, food processing, heating and air conditioning, residential and automotive applications. In this experiment, you will be able to examine the following: Pump pressure versus flow Pump power consumption versus flow Pump efficiency versus flow Series and parallel pump configurations using identical pump units Variation of rotational speed on power, flow and pressure developed The laboratory procedures and system documentation are typical of those used by manufacturers to define and certify pump performance. 2) Equipment details The apparatus consists of two identical direct coupled centrifugal pumps. The pumps have no couplings or seals that will reduce performance. !ach pump is supplied with a variable fre"uency drive unit and a #touchpad$ speed control on the side of the drive unit. The pumps are each instrumented with suction and discharge pressure gauges attached to the piping flanges. %urther instrumentation is available through a hand held #remote control$ unit that lin&s to each pump v.f.d. through an infra red system. This remote control unit allows the user to poll the v.f.d. and send operational setpoints or receive data. The unit will display real time data indicating the pump flow setpoint, actual flow rate, power supplied in '( and rotational speed. The apparatus piping system is configured to provide single pump operation, dual pump operation in parallel or series piping connections and flow through varying piping branches or differing si)es. In addition to the piping branches, calibrated flow balancing valves are incorporated in each of the branches to allow a metering of the flow rate in the system. 3) Laboratory Procedures 3.1) Initial procedure *+ Verify that at least *, psi. pressure is present in the system at the main air separator at the far right end of the apparatus. If there is -.T *, psi. present on this gauge, see the instructor before proceeding. /+ 0onnect the main power #Twistloc&$ plug to the receptacle behind the left end of the apparatus. 1e sure to twist the plug in a cloc&wise direction after inserting it in the receptacle.

2+ Turn the main disconnect switch located on the right side of the main electrical panel to the #.-$ position. !ach pump has an #.-$ pushbutton switch 3green+ and an #.%%$ pushbutton switch 3red+ on the front face of the electrical panel. 4. -.T push these now. 5+ The large valves used to isolate the Pumps should all be in the 06.S!4 position, or the handles placed perpendicular to the piping. .P!- the suction and discharge valves on Pump 7* 3closest to you on the apparatus+. The Pump suction is the right hand flange on the Pump as you face it, and the discharge is the left flange as you face the Pump. 8+ .pen the main inlet valve to Pump 7* located ad9acent to the air separator and next to the piping connection to pump 7/. :+ 1e sure the bypass valve on the connection between Pump 7/ discharge and Pump 7* suction is closed. ;+ 6eave the pump valves closed on pump 7/, and the main discharge valve from Pump 7/ to the main piping system that is ad9acent to the discharge of Pump 7*. <+ Verify that you have a complete piping circuit with open valves at Pump 7*, and that -. %6.( can either be sent through Pump 7/ or through other open valves. =+ Inspect the balancing valves on the piping manifold located at the rear of the apparatus. >ll valves should have #,$ on the valve handles aligned with #,$ on the blac& indicator sleeves. Turn the gray valve on the top of the unit to a point where the number #8$ is visible on the blac& sleeve, and the number #,$ on the handle is aligned with the sleeve scale. ?ou are now prepared to proceed with the experiments. 3.2) Single Pump peration

Start pump 7* using the green pushbutton on the electrical control panel. ?ou should hear a relay close, and within 8 seconds the pump motor will start. These pumps are extremely "uiet, so you may need to loo& at the pump gauges to verify operation. ?ou should see a green l.e.d. on the pump touch pad, and the highest bar on the speed indicator will be lit. This signifies the pump v.f.d. is energi)ed, and the motor is operating at maximum speed. (ith the remote control, verify the pressure 3head+ setpoint and poll the v.f.d. for the motor speed, motor power and setpoint values. @ecord the pump pressure gauge readings. 4rop the speed one indication #bar$ using either the remote control or the 3 + button on the v.f.d. touchpad, and repeat. 0ontinue until you have reached the minimum speed setting. (hen completed, turn the pump .%% and close all valves. 3.3 Series peration of !"o Pumps
