Holiday closure Back to school time!

Welcome to the start of the 2013-14 school year at Great Lakes Child Development Center. We are starting our eighth year, which is very exciting!

Fever policy reminder

If your child is unwell over a weekend, especially if he or she is running a fever, please make sure your child is fever-free for at least 24 hours before returning to school. Oftentimes, a fever will return after 18 or 20 hours, which means the childs body is still fighting off whatever is causing illness. This also means that the child is exposing other children and GLCDC staff members to the illness. For this reason its very important to keep a sick children at home until they are fever-free for 24 hours.

Free vision, hearing tests for Pre-K

We are working on scheduling vision and hearing tests for Pre -Kindergarten students who are going to Kindergarten next year. (2014-2015) The vision and hearing screenings are free, and they are mandatory for every child beginning school in the state of Michigan. Macomb County Health Department screeners will perform the tests, here at GLCDC. We will send home letters as soon as the test dates are set.

When the subject of back to school comes up, people seem to have mixed feelings. Some of us dislike the end of summer and the idea that snowy days are close at hand. Others love back-to-school time fresh school supplies, shopping for shoes and clothes, the opportunity to make new friends. For better or for worse, the new school year means new beginnings. Change can be scary, but it can be exciting too. Look at back to school as a chance to make a fresh start, and share that positive outlook with your child. If we start now with getting kids excited about back-to-school, theres a good chance they will stay excited about school for many years.

Notes about lunches at GLCDC

On Bring Your Own Lunch Day please pack limited treats, and do not send candy or sodas. Also, please send sandwiches or something in a Thermos or a cold entre because teachers cannot leave the classrooms to microwave entrees. If your child has food allergies or cannot eat certain foods at lunchtime you only need to send a sandwich or Thermos or cold entre. Your child will be served the daily fruit and vegetable, and milk to drink. That way, all the children can eat together family-style. A child who does not have an allergy, but simply does not like something, should be encouraged to try the menu items being served at GLCDC. We put a lot of effort into making the selections appealing to children, as well as including a mix of hot and cold entrees. Give your children a chance to try new things and expand their palates!
