BEHAVIOR PLAN Students behavior is the key of providing the proper learning environment.

Planning a behavior plan for the first year of teaching will be adjusted according with the schools general behavior plan. Self discipline should come from each individual. Since every action has a consequence, students choose outcomes based on the choices they make with regards to their behavior. There are few reasons for progressive discipline: Classroom disruption Defiance of school personnel Disregard of school rules Nuisance items Profanity Tardy to class Violence of hands off policy

Progressive discipline is applied to students who need or want an extra training on proper behavior because they choose not to follow the expectations that were set forth by the school or the teacher. In progressive discipline, each step is followed by another, providing the student with several
opportunities to modify his/her behavior. The teacher will keep important documentation for each progressive discipline step used: warning, and/or correction from the teacher, conference with the teacher after class, before or after school; reduce participating grade; behavior contract; detention, letters and/or phone calls home; and referral to the counselor or dean office. Every action will depend on the severity and frequency of the misbehavior. Steps to follow on a progressive discipline: 1. Redirect the student behavior: verbal or nonverbal reminder, what are you doing what you supposed to do? The teacher presence at the close proximity of the student or tapping on the desk can be another way of correcting the students behavior. 2. Pupil conference: the teacher can pull aside the students and review the behavior expectations, the student having the opportunity to respond. 3. Phone call Home / letter to parents: First mention the area where the student is successful, show concern for the student behavior, ask for parent help and make a verbal agreement that the parent will get involved to discipline their child. 4. Detention: detention time can be set after school or in the morning before any class starts. 5. Counselor referral: automatic counselor behavior will take place in case of bullying, concerns about a students emotional or mental health or a situation taking place at home, sudden, extreme changes in a student behavior that causes concern. 6. Request for a Parent Conference: the students teachers and counselor will be invited to participate at the Parent Conference. 7. Student discipline referral: Write a detailed discipline referral to the administrator (dean). They will take the right decision according with the teacher documentation provided.

The discipline plan is based on classroom rules and procedures which consist on rewards for students who abide by the rules and will receive positive consequences. For students who decide to break the rules their behavior will be corrected by penalties which have negative consequences. Rewards will consist of: Praise A note home (Good news cards) Student of the day, week, or month Work posted Certificate of honor

Penalties will be: Detention Assignment to write ways to correct a problem Being last to leave Loss of rewards Exclusion of class participation

A copy of the discipline plan will be sent home to parents on the first day of school. The teacher will introduce to parents before asking for any assistance with a problem. Parents will receive phone calls as soon as the teacher will see a change in their child behavior. Tracking the student behavior: In the grade book there will be created an assignment not for grade called student behavior. This assignment gives the options to add the progressive discipline for every student records. On a score note upper left side the teacher will keep track of the date of incident, behavior description, consequences for breaking rules, or rewards for excellent behavior, day when the parent was contacted by phone or written letter etc. Using footnotes of the score notes the student behavior becomes available in the parent link and the parents can check their child behavior and grades any time.

There are severe behaviors which require skipping the progressive discipline steps. Extremely Serious Behavior Most classrooms rarely see instances of violence, vandalism, and drug use, possession of weapons or fighting. When it does occur, the teacher must take action immediately. When the situation reaches this level and the authorities are contacted, it is out of the classroom teachers hands.
