About the Holy Name Society of the Philippines The Holy Name Society, a confraternity entrusted to the Dominican

Founder of the Holy Name Society Now who was this man, 5lessed 2ohn of 8ercelli, OP and what did he doJ He was born 2ohn :arbella around 1/!- near the city of 8ercelli% The son of a dairy farmin+ family, had lots of land, sheep and the wool from the sheep was turned into HwealthH of one form or another% 8ercelli is appro7imately 3-! miles north of $ome and 6ust about e4ually distant between #ilan and Turin% .bove the city of 8ercelli on the side of the mountain is a town called H#ossa Santa #ariaH and above the town is a hamlet called H)appa #ostroH and this is where 2ohn :abrella was born% 2ohn :abrella received his education in the school ri+ht ne7t to the )hurch at he bottom of the mountain where the city of 8ercelli is located% He was a student of "niversity of Paris at the a+e of 1,* by the time he was /- he had received his Doctorate of )ivil and )anon ?aw% =t was a delayed vocation to the reli+ious life% He left Paris and started a school in 8ercelli% He tau+ht school and met 5lessed 2ordan of Sa7ony, who was then a dynamic Dominican preacher% He received 2ohn 8ercelli into the Order of Preachers% =t was Saint Dominic who founded the Order of Preachers in 1/1<% He recruited 5lessed 2ordan Sa7ony in 1//1% 5lessed 2ordan was 3! years old when he was received into the Order, 6ust two years before St% Dominic died% 5lessed 2ohn 8ercelli became the <th #aster :eneral of the Order% He has been +iven the credit as the founder of the Holy Name Society% )omin+ from the Northern =taly, he was rather short in stature with a pointed chin and blue eyes% He was 'nown to be lame, some would say that he was crippled, had a limp on his ri+ht side or would use a wal'in+ stic' while wal'in+ barefoot everywhere he went% The bac' part of his wal'in+ stic' is a relic shrined in New Orleans and the remainin+ part of the wal'in+ stic' is in a monastery in 8ercelli, =taly% He was credited for the savin+ the writin+s for St% Thomas .4uinas% He was 'nown to be obedient to the popes of his time%
