Thoughts of February may in-
clude winter weather, Valentines
Day and the leap year. But Febru-
ary also is American Heart
Month. Moorestown High School
art teacher Julia Mooney is rais-
ing awareness throughout the
month of February, for a charita-
ble cause.
After Mooney and her husband
Patrick, a social studies teacher
at MHS, found out their baby
would be born with congenital
heart defects, Mooney took her
pain and starting spinning it into
action. Officially released by
Lightening Source Publishing on
Feb. 4, Mooney wrote a book ti-
tled, Flowers in the Moonlight.
As an artist, I've always
turned to creative outlets in re-
sponse to stressful situations, so
the book unfolded naturally. After
doctors diagnosed our baby's
heart defects, transposition of the
great arteries and a ventricular
septal defect, our pregnancy be-
came a bit of an emotional roller
coaster for me, Mooney said,

The Sun
Snowfall and freezing temper-
atures have rocked South Jersey
this winter. While some munici-
palities in the area struggle with
proper snow removal after each
hard-hitting storm, Moorestown
has a secret weapon to combat
one of the harshest winters in
recent years.
At a council meeting on Nov.
18, 2013, a resolution authorized
a transfer of $45,000 from the
budget appropriation of that
year to a snow removal reserve
trust fund.
Though no one questioned
the resolution then, it is now
garnering much attention, as
the funds are being put to good
use. While the council previous-
ly allocated $45,000 for snow and
ice removal, the funds in the re-
serve accrued to more than
$100,000. The large accumula-
tion of funds was due to the
mild winters of the previous
years. Moorestown more than
doubled the regular snow and
ice removal budget with the
trust fund and lifted a financial
burden to deal with the frequent
snow and ice removal, which
other area towns have faced this
year.
Municipalities can create
trust funds and reserves and
hold any unused portion of the
funds in subsequent years.

than seven inches in Moorestown, the towns snow reserve trust fund was put to good use. Plows
and other snow removal equipment worked to keep roads clear during and after the storm.

The next Step Recovery Wor-
ship Service will be on Sunday,
Feb. 23. The event will take place
at 10 a.m., at the First Baptist
Church of Moorestown, 19 West
Main Street. The First Baptist
Church of Moorestown will be
holding a series of worship serv-
ices, based on the 12 Steps of Ad-
diction Recovery Program.
"Each month, on the fourth
Sunday, our worship service will
be centered around one of the 12
Steps of addiction recovery," said
Reverend Linda Pepe, pastor of
FBCM, Bill W., one of the
founders of Alcoholics Anony-
mous, often said that the 12 steps
were designed to help us learn,
and put into practice, the most
basic spiritual truths. It is our
hope that through these services,
we can all gain a deeper under-
standing of those truths and how
we can support one another in
putting them into practice."
The First Baptist Church of
Moorestown has a strong commit-
ment to the recovery community,
and is home to several 12 Step
groups.
"We have offered a few night re-
covery services this past year,
that have been well attended, so
offering services on Sunday
mornings is a natural next step."
Pepe said.
"The services are open to
everyone, but we are especially
inviting those struggling with, or
impacted by addiction. What we
hope to offer is a judgment-free
zone, Pepe said.
FBCM is a welcoming and af-
firming church, LGBTQ friendly
and passionate about spreading
the word of God's unconditional
love. Most importantly, the FBCM
is committed to peace building
and social justice.

the upcoming 12 Step programs,

Under state law, a local govern-
ment unit may establish a snow
removal reserve to address the ex-
pected costs of snow and ice re-
moval each winter. Money in
these reserves could only be uti-
lized for expenses related to snow
and ice removal.
The fund has lead to a
smoother transition from snow-
covered to clean roads and less
slippery residential streets this
winter, officials said.
Comments regarding the snow
removal trust fund or any other
questions related to the council
can be voiced at the next meeting,
Wednesday, Feb. 19 at
Moorestown High School.

W
eve written openly and
often in this space about
casinos and gambling in
general, and, for the most part, we
have advocated for the support of At-
lantic Citys casinos, and expanded
gambling offerings such as online
gaming and betting on sports.
This time, not so much.
We dont often bash politicians in
this space, either. Were more of the
thumbs up kinda guys and gals
when it comes to recognizing the work
our elected officials put in. They get
enough grief for every move they
make from other sources.
This time, not so much.
State Sen. President Steve Sweeney,
like just about every politician past,
president and, most likely, future, is
concerned about Camden. He wants to
revitalize the city, along with other
struggling cities such as Trenton and
Newark. His solution, according to a
Press of Atlantic City report, is to
open casinos in Camden, which he be-
lieves might be a better location for
gambling than East Rutherford, where
gambling dens have been proposed.
He must be joking.
Outside New Jersey, Camden is infa-
mous for being the murder capital of
the U.S. Inside New Jersey, its reputa-
tion might be even worse.
Sure, casinos can bring significant
revenue to an area and, to an extent,
help revitalize it. But that just wont
work here, in our opinion.
For casinos to be successful nowa-
days, there have to be more offerings
than just gambling were talking
shows, dining, nightlife, spas and
shopping. Just look at Atlantic Citys
gambling revenue decline versus its
increase in non-gambling revenue. Its
obvious.
This cant happen in Camden.
Wealthier New Jersey residents
with disposable income the ones who
can afford to spend lavishly at the
comedy clubs, on a massage and on a
steak dinner arent likely to flock to
Camden to do the same. And out-of-
staters? Good luck with that!
The more likely scenario is that a
casino in Camden would prey on the
already poor residents of the poverty-
stricken city, promising a chance at an
easy solution but delivering nothing
but empty wallets.
Camden isnt a lost cause. Hard
work, determination and, frankly,
some luck, could turn the city around
... over time. But it will take dedication
and smart planning, not a quick fix
such as a casino.
What is Sweeney thinking?
in our opinion
Casinos in Camden?
Steve Sweeney must be out of his mind!
Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on state Sen.
Steve Sweeneys idea to bring casinos to
Camden, or other cities such as Trenton
or Newark? Do you think it could work, or
would it do more harm than good? Share
your thoughts with our readers.
Burlington County Freeholder director
Leah Arter announced that the Board of
Chosen Freeholders has approved the 2014
calendar of events and special promotions
for the Burlington County Animal Shelter.
Free Pets for Vets This yearlong initia-
tive began in February 2013 as a way to give
thanks to local military veterans looking
for a pet. Since then, 107 animals have
found good homes and local veterans have
saved $6,885.
Free Pets for Seniors This yearlong
initiative began in the spring of 2013 with
the purpose of providing companionship
for local seniors. Forty-nine pets were
adopted in 2013, saving local senior citizens
more than $3,000.
Raining Cats and Dogs This joint ven-
ture with the Friends of the Burlington
County Animal Shelter volunteer organi-
zation increases awareness, education and
promotion of adoptions. Scheduled for
April 26, the event is a family-friendly festi-
val that includes animal displays, demon-
strations, exhibits and food vendors. Dur-
ing the event, adoption costs are offset by
the county, bringing dog adoptions down
from $75 to $40 and cat adoptions from $45
to $20. In 2013, 12 animals were adopted
during this promotion.
The Dog and Cats Days of Summer
During this month-long promotion the
county offsets the cost of all animal adop-
tions to $0 for any adoption made in Au-
gust. The animal shelter has found that Au-
gust is consistently the time of year with
the highest intake of stray and surren-
dered animals and as a result has found
this program effective in creating the nec-
essary space within the shelter. In 2013,
this event saved the public more than
$5,000 with 140 animals adopted.
The shelter is located at 35 Academy
Drive right off of Woodlane Road, behind
the Burlington County Library in West-
ampton Township. Hours of operation are:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Sat,
Sun: 12-4 p.m.; Thursday: 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
For more information, visit www.friend-
sofbcas.org or www.co.burlington.nj.us/

Burlington County announces special shelter promotions
after another to paint illustra-
tions for it. After that, it only
made sense to use the money for
children with heart disease. The
book includes a heart fairy, who
can be spotted here and there,
leaving behind hearts in each il-
lustration for readers to search
for.
When Mooneys baby is deliv-
ered in April, he will need to have
immediate heart surgeries.
Mooneys husband contributed a
poem to the book in support of
her cause.
Frankly, her passion and ener-
gy are what inspired the poem be-
cause without her story and the
beautiful illustrations, there
would be no poem. Rather than
lament and woe the misfortune of
carrying a baby with a heart de-
fect that would require immedi-
ate major surgery, she directed
her energy toward paying back to
the community and spreading the
wealth of medical technology and
capability to the less fortunate,
Patrick Mooney said.
Though her process was some-
what grueling, Mooney was deter-
mined to not only publish Flow-
ers in the Moonlight, but also
create an entire charity based
around the book, with 100 percent
of the books proceeds going to
other families and babies strug-
gling with heart defects. In addi-
tion to book sales, Mooney has
sold, and is continuing to sell, t-
shirts in support of the cause.
Like the book, The non-profit
organization that I established for
the book is called Flowers in the
Moonlight, Mooney said, but
the primary organization that we
donate to is Gift of Life Interna-
tional, which provides treatment
to children in emerging countries
with congenital heart disease.
Gift of Life International is a
charity for children with congeni-
tal heart defects, specifically like
those Mooneys son will experi-
ence. All proceeds from Mooneys
book will be given to families reg-
istered with the charity, who do
not have access to treatment facil-
ities due to logistical and finan-
cial reasons.
Mooney mentioned the theme
of Flowers in the Moonlight
being greatly inspired by those
whose stories started somewhat
like hers.
Two flowers that only bloom
in the moonlight, existing in
happy isolation together, find a
tiny bud on their solitary bush.
They respond with excitement
and a bit of fear the central
message is that even though life
can shake up your world, staying
true to your family and home will
bring you out on the other side,
Mooney said.
Mooney credited her husband,
and the students and staff at
MHS, with ongoing support after
her book was released. MHS is
selling Mooneys t-shirts to staff
members. The book and prints of
Mooneys illustrations were sold
at the school store on Valentine's
Day, for both staff and students.
I'm grateful that the high
school has offered support,
Mooney said, Art students in
particular, should see a way to
use their talents to benefit a so-
cial cause. Although I'm not doing
this for profit, the process has
been identical to what it would be
if an artist were self-publishing
for profit. Mooney elaborated,
There are lessons to be learned
about business, layout, software,
marketing and more.
The website for both the book
and donations is www.flow-
ersinthemoonlight.org. Mooney
is open-minded to the idea of ex-
panding the Flowers in the
Moonlight mission.
A friend of mine, Dana Aita-
Force, made red scarves that she
sold to support our charity,
Mooney said, The possibilities
for support are endless, but the
easiest way to spread the word is
to hang an illustration on your
wall, or give somebody a book.
Though no future events are
specifically planned at MHS for
raising money, Its certainly a
possibility. At the very least, I
would like to try to organize
something in February next year,
for heart disease awareness
month, Mooney said.
Flowers in the Moonlight
will be the highlight of an art
show and book promotion at
Maestro Studios in Haddonfield.
The event will take place on
March 15 at 6 p.m. The event host
is Robert Bradshaw. For more in-
formation, contact Bradshaw at
