Reading Strategy (25 points 5 each) Hobby or Obsession? Dave Well my girlfriend says Im obsessed. Shes always complaining that I spend every Saturday either at a game, or watching it on TV. I dont think Im obsessed. I only watch football about, well, maybe three times a week. Footballs great, so exciting. And its awesome now that they play weekday games and on Sundays too. Ive loved football ever since I was a kid; my dad took me to my first game when I was oh, I cant have been more than about five. And I still support the same team: the Dallas Cowboys. Theyre the greatest! Jim I suppose you could say Im obsessed. It all started about five years ago when I fell off my bicycle and broke my leg. I had to stay in the hospital for ages and I couldnt move and people kept bringing me chocolates and stuff and I got really fat. When finally they let me out of the hospital I still couldnt do much for about six months and I felt just awful. When my leg was better, I started going to the gym to get back into shape. It took months of hard work but it was really worth it and after I got in shape again, well, I just kept going. Now I go every day before work and sometimes on weekends, too, and its great. I meet friends, have a long workout and then a shower and a drink, and I like the feeling I have of, you know, really being in shape. Here are some of the things that Daves and Jims friends and families have said about their hobbies. Put their names next to each comment. Two of them are extra. 1. If only hed do some different sport or activity at least on the weekend! 2. Hes always reading them. If only he were interested in something more normal. 3. Its definitely an obsession. You know he even watches it on TV when he has seen it live! 4. It cant be good for you to do it so often. Its just too much exercise. Its boring. All they do is throw a ball around. I wish he spent more time with me.

As questes 2 a 5 se referem ao texto abaixo: With Nicoles help Rosemary bought two dresses and two hats and four pairs of shoes with her money. Nicole bought from a great list that ran two pages, and bought the things in the windows besides. Everything she liked that she couldnt possibly use herself, she bought as a present for a friend. She bought colored beads, cushions, artificial flowers, honey, a guest bed, bags, scarves, lovebirds, miniatures for a dolls house, and three yards of some new cloth the color of prawns. She bought a dozen bathing suits, a rubber alligator, a traveling chess set of gold and ivory, big linen handkerchiefs for Abe, two chamois leather jackets of kingfisher blue and burning bush from Herms. Nicole was the product of much hard work. For her sake trains began their run at Chicago and crossed the continent to California; in factories men mixed toothpaste in vats and girls canned tomatoes quickly in August or worked hard at the local store on Christmas Eve; Indians worked on Brazilian coffee plantations - these were some of the people who contributed to Nicole s wealth and, as the whole system swayed and thundered onward, it gave a rosy color to such processes of hers as wholesale buying.
