Ischemic optic neuropathy is a condition caused by loss of blood flow to the optic nerve, resulting in vision loss. It is classified as either anterior or posterior based on appearance of the optic disc. Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) is a common cause of vision loss in those over 50. The most important type of AION to rapidly identify and treat is arteritic AION, which can be caused by giant cell arteritis (GCA). GCA is a systemic vasculitis that commonly affects the ocular arteries and causes vision loss. Prompt diagnosis with temporal artery biopsy and high-dose steroid treatment is needed to prevent further vision loss.
