The brutality of the massacres shocked the world community, but what the international media failed to mention was that the civil war was preceded by the flare)up of a deep)seated economic crisis. /t was the restructuring of the agricultural system which precipitated the population into ab0ect poverty and destitution.

%6nderstanding the !wandan genocide requires that we understand something about the historical and political preconditions, but an analysis of the social and cultural factors that imparted a specific form to this tragedy is also necessary.
