FAMILY AFFAIR Archer Hammond and Alice Savona (front) with their siblings (L-R) Georgia, Jackson, Megan, Lucy, Anthony (Savona dad), with Brooke and Grace skiing at Pykes Creek after competing in the Southern 80 ski race. Photo Helen Tatchell By Kate Taylor Two Moorabool families have returned from the largest speed ski race in the Southern hemisphere, the Southern 80, tired but satised with their impressive results. The event, held along the Murray River, sees upwards of 80,000 spectators line the course - and a Ballan family, the Hammonds, and a Bacchus Marsh family, the Savonas, were in the middle of the action. Brooke Hammond and Grace Savona both competed in the Under 16 Girls, along with Georgia Savona who came fth in the event. Brooke had a fall on Saturday but it didnt stop her from racing on the Sunday in the main event and she took out third place, said proud mum Janine. Meanwhile, Alice Savona won second place in the Under 13 Girls, and Lucy Savona took out second place in the Under 19 Girls. Jackson Hammond competed in the Presidents race, setting an impressive time. Sunday morning he raced in the Under 16 Boys to take the win and break an eight-year record and that time saw his team outright winners for the whole event beating the fastest superclass boat by one second. His team then backed up and competed in another 80km race in the Under 19 Boys to take third position. Archer Hammond skied in the Under 10 category, which was the largest class of entrants with 26 kids competing; he skied well and placed 11th. Megan Hammond competed in the Under 13 Girls and skied well in the extreme heat and high winds. The dads of the families were not left out of the competition either, with Anthony Savona and Steven Hammond driving the boats alongside another Moorabool resident, Paul Shirreff. It was a fantastic result for all the kids. Two proud sets of parents, Janine said. Jackson Hammond and Grace Savona have since both been selected to race in New Zealand at the end of April.

Will new rate charges make you irate?

Lets talk about the new draft rate strategy: thats the message that Moorabool Shire Council put to the people last week. The Draft Rate Strategy and Consultation Plan were proposed at a February 19 Special Meeting and councillors voted to put it out for public consultation without objection. Moorabools Rate Strategy was due to expire in April 2015, but a report to the meeting said due to changes at State Government level it was recommended that the new strategy be in place in time for the 2014/15 budget. The report said 45 of Victorias 79 councils imposed a municipal charge on all ratepayers regardless of the value of their property and the median charge was $204. Staff recommended that Moorabool follow suit. Council has also carefully considered whether the imposition of the current rating differentials are equitable and justied in light of current circumstances, the report said. It outlined the current system plus four new options all of them allowing farmers to pay lower rates, while suburban homes pay slightly more. Mayor Paul Tatchell later explained that the current differential rate system is awed because it values properties according to their best use and that the best use is often not agriculture, even though that is what the land is being used for. They have every right to be concerned because valuations come out this year, and an increase in property value based on a awed differential rating formula will magnify the problem of rates; also, foreigners are land-banking at our local farmers expense. Were rating people more than what the farmers are getting paid. So weve put it out for people to talk about. Lets have a grown up conversation about it.

Your rates: the choices

Option 1 Current rates system, General (suburban homes) rates average $1333, farmland $1990, quarries/mines $20,313. No municipal charge. Option 2 General rates would average $1343, farms $1936 (2% drop), quarries/mines $19,374 (4% drop). Municipal charge $77. Option 3 - General rates would average $1354, farms $1882 (5% drop), quarries/mines $18,436 (9% drop). Municipal charge $153. Option 4 - General rates would average $1374, farms $1774 (10% drop), quarries/mines $16,559 (18% drop). Municipal charge $307. Option 5 - General rates would average $1387 , farms $1553 (21% drop), quarries/mines $15,854 (21% drop). No municipal charge.
Homes in towns (known as the general rate category) account for 11,187 Moorabool properties. The Farm rate was the second biggest category with 1507 properties. The smallest category was Extractive Industries (14). Council staff told the meeting that depending on the decisions of councillors, the public should be consulted via online advertising, print media and seeking input via stalls at events including the Bacchus Marsh Harvest Festival, Autumn Festival and Myrniong Music in the Park. They also suggested sending out yers in the next round of quarterly rates notices. But Cr Pat Toohey said this was inconsistent, as yers would not go out to people who paid rates as an annual lump sum. If landowners choose to pay this way, rates must be paid by February. You will get a case of My neighbour got one and I didnt., he said. Can we get a costing on sending something to everyone and the logistics? Cr Tonia Dudzik said she wanted to see a public meeting. I would feel more comfortable about this if there was a public meeting in Bacchus Marsh. Why cant we do this?, she said. Chief Executive Ofcer Rob Croxford said it may not work. In our experience public meetings are not effective in gaining feedback, he said. There is no reason we cant do it, its just not effective in getting a conversation going. Councillors later voted to send a mail out - at an estimated cost of $2000 - to every landowner in the shire. The Ballan meeting was advertised in The Moorabool News on 11 February. Councillors Tom Sullivan and Allan Comrie were an apology on the night.

Toy library opens

MOORABOOL is now home to what is believed to be the only disability-friendly toy library left in the western half of the state. The Embrace ASD Wellbeing Library opened its doors on Thursday 13 February from 12.30-2pm and will operate on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month in the Ballan Primary School community room in Duncan St. Items available to borrow include pedal-less bikes to teach balance, board-ball devices to teach proprioception, body stockings, thinking putty, lava lamps, games such as Twister, board games and childrens books/DVDs about emotions and social skills. The library also has books for parents about sensory disorders, tips for teaching social skills, home-schooling and more. Embrace ASD President Amber Durante said library items had all been donated - or purchased with donated money and no government grants had been used. Some of the local special schools have been really helpful with donations of games and toys, she said. We have also used money from a recent rafe to purchase some items. I really think it is better to try these things rst, before buying something expensive that your child may not even like. Library opening hours will piggyback regular 11am Embrace ASD meetings also. Ballan Primary School Principal Julie Ferguson said she was delighted with the new service and the school would also sign up to borrow toys and equipment. Ms Durante said up to two items could be borrowed for a two-week period and parents would need to bring photo ID before getting a library card. She said there would be no joining fee and donations of quality clean toys, books and equipment suitable for age 2-20 were welcome. We want to focus mainly on numeracy and literacy especially, she said. Ms Durante said the library targeted families affected by sensory issues. This could include ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), ADHD (Attention Decit Hyperactivity Disorder), ODD (Oppositional Deance Disorder), auditory processing disorders or people with symptoms not yet been formally diagnosed. For more on the Embrace ASD Wellbeing Library, go to www.embraceasd.net, Embrace ASD on Facebook or call 5368 7549 or 0430 343 473.

Helping Our Community

This week focusing on Diversity
Moorabool Shire Council Aged and Disability Services must have a Diversity Plan that addresses the diverse needs of our community and this plan is lodged with the Department of Health every 12 months. Below is a copy of the plans flow chart. In 2011 there were approximately 28,124 people living in the Moorabool Shire and those identified as diverse represent approximately 20% of the population. Unfortunately the clients registered within HACC are way under representative of this number. This Diversity Plan and Practice has identified strategies to address and improve the statistical data for this group of people. People with Dementia 1. We have introduced the Coffee and Conversations Caf where carers and clients are able to attend and receive information, support and practical assistance, 2. We have a dementia day program where people with dementia can attend a safe environment and participate in activities. People from CALD backgrounds 1. We are hoping to get a multicultural luncheon happening to again support the clients that are from a non-English background Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders 1. Provide aboriginal awareness training to staff, so we are better able to engage with our indigenous clients People who are homeless or at risk of homelessness 1. Within the HACC target population, some special-needs groups may experience particular difficulties in gaining access to HACC services that are appropriate to their needs, we will work alongside the Access and Support Worker from Centracare to assist these potential clients to engage in HACC services, 2. Mental health capacity building for staff to assist clients who suffer mental health issues. Rural and Remote Clients 1. Run a monthly Community Concert and Lunch program from Bungaree Community Centre, so isolated clients can form friendships, be entertained and enjoy a 2 course meal. Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer 1. Staff awareness training - People around the world face violence and inequality and sometimes torture, even execution because of who they love, how they look, or who they are. Sexual orientation and gender identity are integral aspects of our selves and should never lead to discrimination or abuse.

Vincent thanks his mother Amber Durante for the new toy library in Ballan. Photo submitted.

Art pumps the heart

By Jessica Howard A local artist who uses painting as therapeutic recovery says he remains positive in investing as much time as possible into his art. Bacchus Marsh resident Brian Lawrence underwent a quadruple bypass and an aortic valve replacement in 2013, but says it was painting that helped him overcome the pain. When you start painting you dont think of your troubles or your pain anymore, you just focus on the art, Mr Lawrence said. After a traumatic year, I want to use this time to remain positive and count my blessings. I plan to invest as much time as possible into my art. In November 2013 Mr Lawrence won Best in Show at the Ballarat Society of Artists Show and was runner up in the Artist of the Year Competition. Im very fortunate to have won these awards over the years, art means a lot to me, he said. Mr Lawrence has won the best local artist at the Ballan Art Show three times and has contributed to the show for the last ten years. Im just happy to be alive and kicking after a hard year, and I am looking forward to getting back into my routine of art in time for this years show, he said. The Ballan Art Show will be held over the weekend of Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 March, in conjunction with the Ballan Autumn Festival (Sunday 23 March).

Exchanging countries
By Jessica Howard A 16-year-old Bacchus Marsh College student, Connor Mackie-Allen, has jetted off to Brazil as part of the Rotary International Student Exchange Program. Connor welcomed the daughter of his Brazilian Host family Rebecca into Melbourne before departing from Sydney airport on February 2. He will y through Auckland, San Tiago, Sao Paulo and eventually arrived in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Connor has been preparing himself since June by learning all he can about the culture and customs of Brazil. I am really excited about living in Brazil and look forward to returning with many stories to tell, he said. Connor is one of 20 students from this area, and among 100 from around Australia, who are experiencing life in another country as part of the program. Fellow Bacchus Marsh College student Clare Hughes is already settling into life in Hungary. The exchange program is one of many youth programs sponsored by the Bacchus Marsh Rotary Club each year. President of the Club, Glenys Kay, believes the program promotes international understanding. We are proud to sponsor Connor and Clare and look forward to their return next year, he said. Among the many Australian souvenirs, Connor has taken over a football to introduce some Australian culture into the local school. He hopes to join a local soccer club, and attend the World Cup Soccer Games held in Belo Horizonte later this year.

The day the music died

Mr Kay said it was a huge loss as the shed was the birthplace of the band and its base of operations. We lost a lot of gear, roughly $10,000 worth, which we had slowly been accumulating over the past six years and also had a lot of sentimental value, Jackson said. The band have taken to social media and with the enthusiasm from fans, launched an online Pozible campaign to help them raise money to make up for the damage of the re. Band members have set a target of $6000 to help them get back on their feet to continue with upcoming shows, and nish the recordings for their forthcoming record. Raised funds will aid in the replacement of the musical equipment lost in the re, and also towards rebuilding the shed. Mr Kay said the support so far has been awesome, with roughly $1800 raised already the band is a third of the way to their target. By Jessica Howard Local Bacchus Marsh band Hollow Everdaze has faced an overwhelming loss, after losing their shed to a backyard re. The shed, which accommodated all of their musical equipment and other personal possessions, belonged to bass player Jackson Kay and was located on his family property in Bacchus Marsh. The re was sparked by an electrical fault and although nobody was injured, the ames destroyed everything within the shed.

It now has the benet of a tanker that can carry as much as 2350 litres. In the unlikely event of a burnover, the tanker is tted with spray nozzles

Communities in and around Mt Warrenheip are better protected from re with the delivery of a new $335,000 medium tanker. Liberal Member for Western Victoria, Simon Ramsay represented the Minister for Police and Emergency Services Kim Wells last Sunday 16 February and handed over the keys to a 2.4C Hino medium tanker to the Mt Warrenheip bri-

Conviction for illegal Bank shares on offer wildlife possession

By Jessica Howard Last week at the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court, a Bacchus Marsh man was convicted and ned for taking wildlife from the wild and illegal possession of wildlife. Pleading guilty to all charges, the man was ned $4,500 plus costs for taking and possessing more than 60 protected and threatened native reptiles, without a permit, licence or authorisation under the Wildlife Act 1975. He must also wait ve years before applying for a wildlife licence under the Wildlife Act 1975. The Court indicated that had he pleaded not guilty, the man would have been sentenced to a term of imprisonment, wholly suspended. Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) Senior Compliance Ofcer Mark Breguet said early last year, DEPI Wildlife Ofcers found python species, a salt water crocodile, a sand goanna and a dead freshwater crocodile on the mans premises. The man did not have a current wildlife licence, permit or authority authorising him to be in possession of the reptiles, Mr Breguet said. The ofcers also seized a number of computers, phones, cameras and electronic storage devices during the search. Mr. Breguet said the Magistrate considered the mans actions as a serious breach of this control. The Magistrate also recognised the need for the community to understand that this behaviour should not occur and would not be tolerated. DEPI Wildlife Ofcers will continue their focus on maintaining and strengthening environmental compliance efforts to ensure better protection of wildlife and more sustainable biodiversity in landscapes throughout Victoria. Shares in Bacchus Marsh Community Bank Branch were offered to the community last week at the launch of a successful Community Bank Campaign. Around 80 community members were hosted at the prospectus launch at the proposed premises in Main Street Bacchus Marsh on February 11. Over $150,000 was collected on the night. Bendigo Bank Chairperson Claire Sutherland said the shares were offered to the community from February 10 and the focus will be on selling $815,000 worth of $1 shareholdings to local residents, traders and business people. This is an historic time for our community and one in which I am sure we will never forget, Mrs Sutherland said. Our aim is to have more than 300 local shareholders having ownership in our company to ensure this is a truly community-spirited company and venture. If our pledge campaign is anything to go by, I expect demand for our $1 shares to be strong and the offer is limited. Mrs Sutherland says the offer will close once the shares and capital have been raised. It is important for the

The fact that our community gets to share in the prots of the branch is an added bonus. Mrs Sutherland said the sooner the share capital is raised, the sooner work can begin on the branch, staff can be recruited and the doors of the Community Bank branch opened to the public.

Meet, greet, swap, sell

By Jessica Howard For the lover of all things vintage, the third annual Ballan Swap Meet presents a perfect opportunity. Organised by the Ballan District Vintage Machinery and Vehicle Club, vintage lovers have the opportunity to wade through rows of vintage machinery, old vehicles and collectables, or set up a site to sell their own wares. Club treasurer Ray Meadows expects up to 800 spectators at the meet this year, and says there have been a lot of enquiries regarding stalls. Last year we had about 100 stalls and we are hoping for a lot more this year, he said. When you have a new swap meet in the area, the locals bring things that they wouldnt bother bringing anywhere else, so we have a lot of fresh stock that has never been seen before, Mr Meadows said. And there will be something for everyone, not just car parts. The meet is to be held this Saturday, March 1, at the Old Ballan Racecourse with food and drink catering on site. Owner of St Annes Winery Allan McLean with The Plough chef Mark Mills, prepare for the Longest Lunch event on Friday 7 March. Photo Helen Tatchell

Feast kicks off with lunch

By Kate Taylor Eating white chocolate port crme broulee is not generally considered a fundraising activity. But at the annual Feast of March Longest Lunch event next month, residents can indulge in the divine creations of chef Mark Mills while at the same time raising funds for the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital. Its the rst year that the event will be held at St Annes Winery, and not The Plough, following last years beginning of a successful joint venture between Mr Mills and the owners of the Winery which sees The Plough provide catering at the venue. Mr Mills has been dedicated to holding the annual fundraiser for many years. He explains that the money raised, many thousands, is not absorbed into general revenue for the hospital but is used to purchase specic equipment that otherwise could not be afforded. Mr Mills has been incredibly busy at St Annes with weddings recently but still nds time to put together every element required to make the Longest Lunch a success. The owners are happy to do it for free because its for a good cause, its for the hospital. Staff are volunteering their time, as well as hospitality students from Bacchus Marsh Grammar, with local producers also donating goods for the lunch including Westside Meats, Tripod Farmers, Jeff Jones plants and Produce and Jones Dairy. The lunch consists of four courses, complete with wines from the vineyard. Were doing our 36 hour slow cooked blade steak, and were doing a white chocolate port crme broulee. Tickets for the Friday 7 March event cost $100 per head and are on sale now by contacting Nadine Homewood at Djerriwarrh Health Services on 0431 444 920.

Letters to the Editor

Email: news@themooraboolnews.com.au Dear Editor, I attended the Australian Citizenship Ceremony as a candidate at the Mechanics Institute in Ballan, on Australia Day this year. I believed the ceremony would be quite drawn out and boring. I was delightedly very mistaken. After a wonderful breakfast was provided for all who attended, I was feeling anxious about the following proceedings. I was kindly reassured and put well at ease by our Mayor Cr Paul Tatchell and Cr David Edwards. Our Mayors speech was well thought out and held my attention, and his conduction of the proceedings of the day is to be highly commended. I was thoroughly entertained by our Moorabool Australia Day Ambassador Mr Paul Jennings, one of Australias great entertainers and an hilarious impersonator indeed! My only complaint was, he wasnt there long enough. After leaving the venue, our Mayor, his lovely wife and Cr Edwards spent time conversing with myself and my family. I would like to say a huge thank you for making my day such a memorable one. Karen OKeefe Bacchus Marsh Dear Editor, Cr Tatchell has no idea obviously about education. He made a comment I dont know why they call them educators. Its childcare. (MN 18 Feb) Im sorry Mr Tatchell you have no idea! It is a very well known fact that the preschool years of early childhood are the most important years of a childs life, and yes it is educating children!! Educators have to follow the Early Years Framework, they have to do observations on the children, they have to plan a program for the children and educate them!! This is obviously ignorance on your behalf Mr Tatchell. You have no knowledge of what the educators do, the training that educators have to go through to be at this level. I dear you Mr Tatchell to spend a day at an educators home and then it will be interesting to see what your comments will be after that. In my opinion you are the one lacking in education. Gina White Bacchus Marsh Dear Editor, How embarrassing that Moorabool Mayor Paul Tatchell responded to last weeks article (Anger over park consultation, MN 18 Feb 2014, p5) by drawing on a capital projects report from Council staff which resulted in him comparing apples with oranges. I was making the point that PASSIVE areas in Maddingley Park i.e. those areas used by the public for family picnics, birthday parties, weddings, service club, Council events, beautication like garden beds, and the infrastructure that supports these i.e. path lighting and maintenance, plus irrigation, do not receive anything like similar funds for improvements or Council commitment, as other areas in the park for organised sport like football, cricket, netball and tennis. There is no argument from me that Council spends many hundreds of thousands of dollars on capital projects for sporting facilities. Mayor Tatchell could have also mentioned that sporting clubs make signicant co contributions to Council grants. My argument is that the passive areas in Maddingley Park are neglected

Dear Editor, Debate on the Family Day Care service has been a regular item over the years with the Councillors from the West being keen to cut the service and those from the East listening to the facts and winning the ght to retain it. Councillors have now made the decision in secret to cut this service and the Mayor comes out with a justication, that it was running at an extraordinary loss of $300,000 per year. Councils own pa-

Environmental Opinion
some way the gment of a few scientists imagination. A recent United Nations report predicts the planet will exceed its carbon dioxide budget by 2040, and the International Energy Agency warns climate change will be irreversible unless solved by 2017. In this case we now only have 3 years to act. Might I say that again THREE YEARS!!! On 20-21 March, European leaders are gathering to decide the new EU climate targets (also called the EU 2030 package). These decisions will dene EU emissions until 2030 and have the power to unlock renewable energy and green jobs. The EU climate deal is a big deal. It will shape Europes carbon emissions and renewable energy development for the next two decades, and, if strong enough, could play a key role in raising global ambition for action on climate change. Let us all hope and pray that they make strong decisions because our government wont. In line with this, the World Bank is pulling back from providing development funding for coal red power stations. This is a signicant move. As Jim Yong Kim notes, continued reliance on fossil fuels and the resultant climate impacts threatens development gains [made] over the last 20 years. This echoes concerns raised by international aid agencies that the present effects of global warming are undoing decades of progress in the poorest parts of the world. Other groups of investors and philanthropic organisations are taking similar action. Development banks in the US and Europe are pulling back from funding coal red power stations, while a major US philanthropic group with combined assets of over $1.8 billion is divesting from fossil fuels and investing in renewable energy. The magnitude of the climate crisis requires that we no longer conduct business as usual, the Wallace Global Funds executive director Ellen Dorsey has told reporters. If we own fossil fuels, we own climate change. Might I repeat that again if we own fossil fuels, we own climate change. Australia might not be winning too many gold medals in the Winter Olympics but we certainly can claim a gold medal for our ownership of fossil fuels. Australia is the second larg-

Time is of the essence

Here in Tasmania we are facing an election in March. The Premier was on the radio recently arguing her case. She was outlining the cost to the state of the scraping of the Carbon Tax by the federal government. It is going to cost Tasmania, because of the states use of hydro power and not carbon power, millions of dollars that would have owed our way had the carbon tax been kept. The Liberal opposition sits quietly by and as yet cannot quite inform the public how the Direct Action will offset this huge loss. Meanwhile Victoria bakes and England oods. As one English writer put it, The massive damage caused by months of rain should rid any serious person involved in political life of the idea that climate change is in est coal exporter and a major expansion of exports is under way, notable through the development of the Galilee basin which contains over 100 billion tons of coal. While the carbon footprint of the average Australian is among the highest in the world, our low population means our national impact is mercifully small. However, we export around the same amount of coal as we use domestically, thus doubling our national contribution to global warming. And nally, Australias move to strip part of Tasmanias forest of its world heritage status one year after it was added is very exceptional, the UN has recently said. It is highly unusual that a boundary change entail removing an extension requested just one year earlier, A Unesco spokeswoman said. Our experts in the world heritage centre have no memory of any similar cases in recent years. As Peter Valentine, associate professor at James Cook University, said, It is my view that what the Australian government is asking cannot be seen as a minor boundary change. If the area is now so badly damaged perhaps the committee would seek an explanation of how this happened and what steps would be taken to ensure rehabilitation (which is an obligation under the world heritage convention). What is your opinion? Next MEG meeting: Tuesday February 27th at 4256 Geelong Rd., Parwan. 7.30pm. All Welcome

Long term prices

For property owners news of price rises is always encouraging, less so when we hear of the occasional market dips. But worrying about short-term price variations overlooks the fact that property is, ideally, a long-term investment and it is long-term data which shows just what a good investment it is. The REIV has collected median house prices for more than 20 years. So while comparisons with previous quarters are interesting and indicate market strength, it is comparisons with the previous year or even ve years which are more signicant for capital gain. Median prices for the 2013 December quarter show healthy growth in some parts of the state and the market beginning to recover in others. But even in the few areas where there was negative growth, comparisons with ve years ago tell a different story. On the Bass Coast, for example, between the December 2012 and 2013 quarters the median house price fell by 1.7 per cent, yet over the ve years from December 2008 it rose from $255,000 to $380,000. And in Hepburn, where the median fell by 13.7 percent between the December 2012 and 2013 quarters, the median price actually rose from $247,200 to $330,000 in those ve years. In areas which showed one year median price growth, the comparisons were far more substantial over ve years. In Ararat, for example, the median house price of $179,750 was up 14.9 per cent on the same quarter in 2012. Five years ago the median was $131,500. In the Central Goldelds, with a December quarter median of $225,000, the one year growth was a healthy 19.7 per cent. And ve years ago the median was just $155,000. The City of Greater Geelongs December median of $410,500 was 6.6 percent up, year-on-year, and $319,000 ve years ago, while the City of Greater Bendigo was up 4.9 per cent for the year, with a median of $320,000 in December 2013 and $238,000 in December 2008. The City of Ballarat was up 2.6 per cent over the year its December 2013 median was $292,500, compared with $235,000 ve years ago. For more information on median house and unit prices, go to www.reiv.com. au /P r op er t y-Re s e a rc h / Median-Prices.

Parks Victorias conservation management includes the control of introduced plant and animal species. As part of an ongoing strategy, notice is hereby given that Parks Victoria will be laying buried baits containing Sodium Monouoroacetate (1080 poison) on public land for the control of foxes. Baits containing 1080 poison will be laid from Saturday 1 March 2014 until Wednesday 30 April 2014. Baits will be laid at strategic sites and other known areas of fox habitat within the following areas: Brisbane Ranges National Park, Steiglitz Historic Park, Lerderderg State Park, Werribee Gorge State Park and Long Forest Nature Conservation Reserve. 1080 poison signs will be posted throughout the baited area and members of the public who are living, visiting or working in the above named areas are advised to take particular care not to disturb or interfere with bait stations. Domestic dogs and cats are particularly susceptible to 1080 poison and should be under effective control, muzzled or kept away from the baited areas. Avenue Bowling Club

Final scores - Avenue 99 def Victoria 71 Division 5 also faced a knockoutmatchagainst second placed Webbcona. Lyn Robinsons and Dave McKendricks rink continued their good form and were able to cover the other two rinks, which each lost by 1 shot. The win means the team nishes in second spot and earns the double chance in next weeks nals. Final scores - Avenue 98 def Webbcona 86 Division 9 played Ballan at Avenue, who sit rst and second on the ladder, well clear of third. Irrespective of the result, both teams will play against each other next week in the rst nal. Final score - Avenue 99 def Ballan 55 In the midweek competition, Avenue Division 3 were able to account for BMS in the rst semi-nal and now face a stronger Invermay side on Monday. Brenda Robinsons rink and Hazel Treloars rink both were victorious by 23 shots. Final score - Avenue 89 def BMS 51

The club entered the nal round of the weekend BDBD competition with two teams from four of its sides featuring in must win games to make the nals. Premier Division travelledto Ballarat East to face the bottom side, and while out of nals contention had everything to play for as a loss would have meant the seasons hard work and narrow losses to the top teams would have been wasted. Final score - Avenue 103 def Ballarat East 77 Third placed Division 3 faced ado or diegame againstVictoria, at Avenue. A winsecured third spot on the ladder and particular mention must be made of Paul OFarrells rink who after 7 ends were trailing 1-13, but recovered to win 22-18. Bacchus Marsh Bowls

(Lord St) Glory was but a step away for the winner of this weeks Division 1 clash with Lanceeld, and the quality of bowls matched the importance of the occasion. Lanceeld got the early jump, getting out to a 20 shot lead, but a strong push to the tea break, with Dylan Filuks rink picking up consecutive 4s and Alan Mahers a 5, saw Bacchus Marsh lead by 2 shots at tea. The momentum continued straight after lunch, with Marsh pushing the lead to 10 shots, but from there the match was locked in an arm wrestle where both teams traded blows right until the nal ends. Some massive bowls were played, none more so than Dylans nal bowl on his penultimate end. 5 down on the head and already having missed on his backhand, Dylan swapped hands and bowled for a 6 shot turnaround and the nal nail in Lanceelds cofn. His rink nished with a 25-23 win, while Alans rink dominated to win 29-15. Amy Gloury and Justin Webster both fought gamely, losing by 3 and 6 shots, for Bacchus Marsh to record a 7 shot victory, catapulting them into the Big Dance for the rst time in a decade. They now await either Lanceeld or Woodend, who comfortably defeated Kyneton Golf. Division 3 were jumped by Kyneton and couldnt get back in the game, losing their rst match of the season, meaning they will have to back up next week for their shot at history.

Junior The B2 team played against top of the ladder Ross Creek. In the doubles, Connor and Joel showed great skills and did get over the line 6 4. In the other doubles set, Lachlan and Owen worked very hard and got to 5 all. Unfortunately they were not able to win the tie-break. Ballan 2/22 lost Ross Creek 4/31. The C2 Blue played at home against Meredith Maroon. In the rst set Emily Tabb and Eva played very well, with the set ending in tie-break. However, their opponents got the rst set point of the match. Ballan 2/21 def Meredith Maroon 2/15. C2 Black played away against Meredith Red. Lachlan and Ben got off to a great start, winning their set 6 1. Nick and Mitchell also showed they did not have any problems with the cold weather. They only dropped 2 games, to give Ballan a good lead. Ballan 3/20 def Meredith Red 1/11. Ballan C3 no report. The C4 team also played against Meredith. With a 6 0 win in the second set Luke and Jessica made sure Ballan took the lead. After the third set Meredith was back in front. Townsen and Luke played very well, but one break was enough for Meredith to take the set 3 6. In the last set Tully and Jessica showed great teamwork and winning 6 2 was enough to bring the win home. Ballan 2/16 def Meredith 2/14. The C5 also played at home in a difcult match against Warrenheip, who proved a bit too strong. Ballan 0/8 lost Warrenheip 4/24. Seniors The second half of the season has been mixed for the A3 senior team. Forfeits and hot weather cancellations has not seen the team take to the court often. Last Saturday in windy but pleasant conditions, they travelled to Ballarat to play Mt Helen/Goldelds. The team enjoyed good hitting against an enjoyable team spirit in Goldelds. Kristy Tatchell and Samantha Lee were the only winners taking one set 8/3. The boys, Darcy Tatchell and Shane Woodroffe could only manage an 8/4 loss to get some sort of score on the card.
