Lesson Plan

Subject:___Science_________________Topic:_Buoyancy _________________ Unit:_Properties of and Changes in Substances__Grade:_____5/6_____________ Learning Outcomes:

GLO C6: Employ effective communication skills and utilize information technology to gather and share scientific and technological ideas and data D3:Understand the properties and structures of matter as well as various common manifestations and applications of the actions and interactions of matter. E1: Describe and appreciate the similarity and diversity of forms, functions, and patterns within the natural constructed world. SLO 5-2-01: Use appropriate vocabulary related to their investigations of properties of, and changes in, substances. 5-2-02: Identify characteristics and properties that allow substances to be distinguished from one another. 5-2-04: Recognize that matter is anything that has mass/weight and takes up space.

Assessment (for, as, of) Learning:

Formative: Students will be observed as they work in partners/groups. Summative: Students will hand in the Buoyancy of Objects worksheet and the Buoyancy Explorer worksheet.

Connection to Last Lesson:

Last lesson students learnt about matter and different characteristics of matter.

Flexible Groupings:
Students will work in partners for this lesson. For the experiment part they can work with their desk partner. For the online activity they will be partnered up by the teachers.

Activating Strategies: Preparing for Learning

Students will be given plastic cups of water and a bag of several items. Students will be asked to examine the objects. The three questions will be written on the board for students and answers will be written as students discuss: 1. Which objects do you think will float in water? 2. Which objects do you think will sink in water? 3. What is buoyancy? Refers to the ability of an object to float in water. 4. Why do you think some objects float in water and other objects sink? (students may suggest that light objects float and heavy objects sink) An objects floats when it is less dense than water/or the matter it is floating in. This means that the particles in the floating objects are farther apart than the particles in the liquid matter. Example a large, heavy log will float in water because the particle in wood are further apart than the particles in water. But a brick which has a greater density than water (particles are closer together), will sink.

Acquiring Strategies: Integrating and Processing Learning

Activity sheet Buoyancy of Objects will be distributed for students to fill in the first two columns (objects and prediction). Students will then place objects one at a time in the water to test their predictions. They will record results on the third column of the activity sheet.

Applying Strategies: Consolidating Learning

Students are shown how to use the interactive online activity Buoyancy Explorer http://www.planetseed.com/laboratory/buoyancy-explorer and answer a few questions about the activity.
