The Awakening Spring 2014 Essential Questions: How does society frame the personal identity?

What is the correct response when ones personal perspectives and desires collide with societal norms? Additional Questions:
Is there a correct response? How do we broaden societys idea of normal? Is this a female problem, or is it more fully inclusive of all of humanity? How are these stories informed by Fosters idea of the one story? How does the struggle between autonomy and individuality vs. societal and familial expectations continue? How do the modern man and the modern woman respond? What responses would continue to be unacceptable even now?

Mind Map: Explore the tension created when personal identity is challenged by society. In what ways -are the short stories you read and The Awakening one story? 2/27 Create a mind map that explores characters, plot, and theme; pull in symbols, setting, point of view, *May do and rhetoric (use of figurative language, rhetorical devices, etc.) as appropriate.
