Welcome to the 201 1 Pocket Companion. This booklet aims to help you make the most of your experience by including essential information about the route , a range of accommodation, bag carrying services, transport, and useful telephone numbers. The route can be walked continuously, completed in sections, or used as a base accessing paths linked to the Way during shorter breaks.
SCOTLANDS GREATEST

Scotlands first official long distance route links Milngavie to Fort William a distance of 154km (96 miles) - from the northern outskirts of Glasgow, through the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park to the foot of Ben Nevis at Fort William. The terrain ranges from lowland moors, dense woodland and rolling hills, to high mountainous regions in the Scottish Highlands. These environments provide habitats for a diverse range of wildlife species, both flora and fauna.
GEOLOGY

The hard rock of the north meets the younger sandstone and conglomerates of the south and is known as the Highland Boundary Fault line. The division between the highlands and lowlands is best seen from Conic Hill.
HISTORIC ROUTES

The route echoes with the stories of the past including Rob Roy MacGregor as it follows historic routes making use of drove roads, Military roads built by troops to help control the Jacobite Clans, old coaching roads and disused railway lines.
AMAZING WILDLIFE

Red deer on the hill, golden eagles soaring over the tops and the elusive feral goats left behind by long-gone communities watch carefully for these and much more Scottish wildlife to be seen along your Way.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION
The West Highland Way is way marked along its length using the official Long Distance Route Thistle symbol.
Sections at the southern end of the Way are suitable for inexperienced walkers and family groups. North of Rowardennan on Loch Lomond side the Way enters more remote country with little shelter, often rough and muddy path conditions for which vehicle access is difficult. Rowardennan is the furthest north private vehicles can access the east side of Loch Lomond from the south. Road access to Inversnaid is from the east, via Aberfoyle. The next point northwards for vehicle access is Inverarnan. Walkers planning to tackle the whole route are strongly recommended to walk northwards from Milngavie to Fort William. The southern section provides a warm up for the more strenuous northern stages. For those who intend completing the route in sections over a period of time you can use the transport information section to help plan the trips. For short breaks see the section with two/ three day suggestions. The time taken to complete the whole route will depend upon your fitness and how much you wish to enjoy the scenery and villages you walk through. The whole Way can be completed in a week averaging around 2 1km (13 miles) a day. Remember, the West Highland Way is a long hill walking expedition and walkers should be equipped accordingly. Stout boots are essential, as is waterproof and windproof clothing. The weather on the Way can change rapidly so be prepared.

There is nothing quite like walking the West Highland Way it really is a journey to remember.

TRANSPORT
The route is particularly well provided for with trains, buses, ferries and taxis. With a little planning they can deliver you and pick you up from your start and finish points. Milngavie and Fort William have good transport links, both being accessible by bus and rail. The West Highland Line also provides access to Crianlarich, Tyndrum, Bridge of Orchy and Fort William. City Link operate a bus service from Glasgow and Fort William, stopping at Inverarnan, Crianlarich, Tyndrum and White Corries (road end). A lot of The West Highland Way users do the route as one continuous journey. However, it is becoming increasingly popular for the Way to be completed in sections over a period of time. Return visits to favourite sections is also on the increase with other local routes making up a two three day break. Even a motoring holiday in Scotland can allow the opportunity to walk parts of this world famous route. Using the transport and links listed you can tailor your break to meet your needs. CAMPING

Many people enjoy camping as part of their experience. We strongly advise you make use of formal campsites, many of which have toilets, showers and drying facilities. See the accommodation sections for details. In 201 1 Camping Byelaws maybe in place restricting wild camping from Balmaha to Rowardennan, check these sites for further information-www.west-highland-way.co.uk and www.lochlomond-trossachs.org
WILD CAMPING

If you intend to wild camp (i.e. with no facilities) please follow the guidance included in the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. Wild camping is lightweight, it involves small numbers, and only for two or three nights in any one place. DO NOT CAMP in enclosed fields of crops, near farm animals Near buildings, roads or historic structures. LEAVE NO TRACE Take away all your litter; bury toilet waste, remove all traces of your tent pitch Please Do Not Assume you can use toilets and showers at formal facilities nearby that are privately owned. Be courteous and check in advance with an establishment if you can use their facilities and offer to pay for the service you receive.

DOGS

If taking your dog it must be kept under close control particularly near farm animals. Fields containing lambs and calves MUST be avoided. If you find yourself surrounded by farm animals protecting their young from a perceived threat you must remove yourself from the situation even if it means leaving your pet behind. See www.west-highland-way.co.uk for up-to-date information.
FIRES

Wherever possible, use a stove rather than light an open fire. If you do wish to light a fire, keep it small, under control and supervised fires that get out of control can cause major damage, for which you might be responsible. Never light a fire on top of vegetation and do not damage living trees to get fuel. Please leave the fire-site safe and remove all evidence of the fire.
TOILETING

Toileting can create problems on a well used route such as the West Highland Way. Make as much use of the toilets available as possible. If a toilet is not available, find a private place well away from the path and at least 50m away from any watercourse. Dig a shallow soil latrine with your boot, stick or trowel and replace excavated material after use. For further information provided by the Mountaineering Council of Scotland visit www.mountaineering-scotland.org.uk/leaflets/toilets.html

IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

A Grid Reference for the emergency, plus other details of where you are. If the emergency occurs away from a road (this includes the path north of Rowardennan to Inverarnan) and you cannot easily get the injured person to a road, dial 999 or 1 12 from a mobile and ask for the police. The police will co-ordinate the situation and inform the relevant agencies. Have a history of the incident ready to tell to the emergency services and any other relevant details you can think of. The more accurate the information you can provide the faster the emergency services will reach the emergency and the quicker they will be able to deal with it once they arrive.

Some accommodation providers will assist you to book accommodation; a charge may be applicable for this service. YOUR GRANDE FINAL WEST HIGHLAND WAY TERMINUS

In 2010 the West Highland Way was officially extended to Gordon Square in the west end of Fort William. The square is dedicated to those who have successfully completed the whole route either in one go or over numerous visits.
This new terminus for the West Highland Way celebrates your arrival into Fort William at Gordon Square. This can also be a rendezvous point to meet up with people who you met on the walk, a great opportunity to share stories. Why not capture your celebration photos here of your great achievement with Loch Linnhe in the background or with the sore feet sculpture - the Clan Chief of West Highland Way Walkers!

OTHER LONG DISTANCE ROUTES

The West Highland Way is one of the Long Distance Routes in Scotland. The following routes offer you the Opportunity to explore more of Scotlands beautiful and varied countryside. Many more routes are available from: walking.visitscotland.com/walks.

The route also offers lots of attractive and interesting options for people seeking shorter day walks - and with some great downhill sections, mountain bikers are sure to enjoy the Three Lochs Way too. Total height gained is approximately 600 metres.
THE KINTYRE WAY

THE INTERNATIONAL APPALACHIAN TRAIL - SCOTLAND

In 2010 the West Highland Way became the first European member of the International Appalachian Trail (IAT) and the founding member of IAT Scotland. The proposed route across Scotland will include the following routes- Ayrshire Coastal Path, Loch Ryan Coastal Path, West Highland Way, the Great Glen and Cape Wrath Trail. Links are still to be agreed between the routes and Shetland as well as Ireland, England and mainland Europe. The Appalachian Trail (Georgia to Maine) is the USAs first national scenic trail, now the worlds longest publicly owned footpath (2 175 miles), and the USAs longest National Park which is managed by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The trail takes an international dimension when the geological links are taken into consideration with the continuation of the Appalachians into Canada and then across the Atlantic to the Caledonian mountains and forest. The International Appalachian Trail organisation works to reconnect the land mass formation by extending the USA trail through Canada (Newfoundland and Labrador) then Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the Isle of Man. The existing shared Celtic Culture with Ireland and Canada add a more recent dimension to being part of this international trail. Future connections will include Norway, Spain, Portugal and a section of Morocco. For more information about the IAT go to www.internationalat.org and www.west-highland-way.co.uk for IAT Scotland information.
