What is Photo Academy?

Photo Academy is a unique five day course being run from 21st- 25th April 2014 with Yury Toroptsov Jerseys International Photographer in Residence 2014. Yury is an internationally exhibited, published and award-winning photographer. His photographs tell stories about people and explore questions of identity, memory and the permanence of myths in contemporary society. His most recent series Marilyn and I first shown at Le Bon March Rive Gauche (2012) in Paris and published in the photo book (Verlhac Editions) with a preface by Catherine Deneuve explores the exceptional longevity of the legend of Marilyn Monroe. Yurys photographs have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions including at the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie in Paris (2008), Paris Photo (2008) and at the Moscow House of Photography (2013). He lives and works in Paris and is represented by Photo 12/Valerie-Anne Giscard dEstaing Photo Gallery. During his Jersey residency Yury will be producing a new body of work inspired by the islands history and folklore. Photo Academy is sponsored by Le Masurier and One Foundation and delivered as a partnership between Archisle: The Jersey Contemporary Photography Programme and La Motte Street Youth Centre. The course is designed to be fun and friendly and cater for a wide range of abilities. Yury will share his knowledge and experience about photography with participants and teach them skills for shooting a range of subjects (people, places and things). He will also show the group examples of published work and exhibitions and talk about other successful photographers working at the cutting edge of their field today. Participants will then have the chance to try out their own individual ideas and styles and work in small groups under Yurys close supervision. Gareth Syvret, Archisle Project Leader, Socit Jersiaise Photo Archive will also be on hand to offer guidance and support. An opportunity to fulfil the requirements for an Arts Award Bronze certificate will be available to participants. An exhibition of photographs by the group will be produced later in the week: location to be announced! This will be a great opportunity for family, friends and the public to view emerging local talent. Course times are 10am - 4pm with mid-morning, lunch and mid-afternoon breaks. Drinks and snacks are available and participants can bring a packed lunch. Participants must be between school/college year 9 to year 13 (inclusive), preferably be able to bring their own camera and most importantly have a keen desire to learn and do photography! Working groups will be organised to be age appropriate.
