BLANKETING REGULATOR

CELTIC

CELTIC
APPLICATIONS

Low pressure of storage tanks

Blanketing systems are use do maintain an inert gas atmosphere between the top of level of the product and the roof of the stored tank. Without blanketing system, volume would be filled with a mixture air and product vapor. Nitrogen and carbon dioxide are the two most common blanketing gases. Some benefits of inert gas blanketing are: Atmospheric oxigen and water vapor are kept away from the stored product, preventing degradation during storage and maintaining product quality. The absence of moisture and oxigen reduces internal tank corrosion. Prevents the formation of an explosive atmosphere inside the tank by keeping the ratio between product vapor and air below the flammability or ignition limits. Prevents toxic/corrosive vapors from escaping, which can contaminate the atmosphere.

Blanketing systems are widely used in chemical industries, food processing, and in storage/loading terminals. CELTIC blanketing systems can control pressures in the range of 12mm (0,5) of WC, also when hight flow rates are required. CELTIC regulator differs from traditional blanketing systems with its compact, single construction. The sensor regulator is mounted on the main regulator, therefore greatly reducing installation space and providing a single unit, easy to install.

TANK

WORKING PRINCIPLE
When stored product is pumped out of the tank, the internal tank pressure decreases and is sensed by the sensor regulator (3). This pressure decrease opens the sensor regulator and allows the inert gas to enter the tank to maintain the inner tank, pressure, but since the flow required to equalize this pressure is larger than the one that can enter the sensor regulator via the calibrated orifice alone (4), the pressure on the upstream side of the sensor regulator decreases. Since the pressure on the upstream side of the sensor regulator is also seen by the diaphragm at the main regulator (1), the main regulator opens, admitting additional inert gas into the tank allowing pressure stabilization. When the tank pressure rises to the sensor regulator (3) set it closes (bubble tight) making the pressure and the upstream side of the regulator to increase, rising the pressure against the main regulator (1) and shutting gas flow into the tank either by the main regulator or the pre-regulator (2). During filling of the tank, the blanketing regulator takes no action, and the excess inert gas is dumped to the atmosphere by the tank`s pressure relief valve, or by the double function relief + vacuum breaker tank valve. With no product into or out of the tank, the system remains hermetically sealed. If there are leaks in the tank`s fittings or welds the regulator will come back into action to maintain tank pressure.

SIZING
In order to size blanketing systems must fulfill two conditions at the same time: The gas volume admitted into the tank must be the same as the volume of the product removed from the tank to maintain a constant tank pressure. The system must also be able to add additional gas to the tank to compensate volume for thermal variations due to night cooling of the tank and the effects of rain. The sizing shall be performed according to API 2000 standards for vacuum breathing. The venting breathing is also calculated according to the API 2000 standards, but refers to the vent valve(s), not the regulator. Qr = Vd + K K (m /h) = V x 0,178197
3

To calculate the required flow use the formula: For tanks with volumes up to 3180m3 K is given by:

Tank Volume (m3) 4.000 5.000 7.500 10.000 15.000 20.000 25.000 28.000

K Factor (m3/h)
683,300 817,594 1084,794 1278,933 1635,199 1983,252 2294,975 2504,835

Where, 3 Qr = required flow (m /h) 3 Vd = maximum tank discharge pump flow rate (m /h) 3 K = volume expansion coefficient (m /h) 3 V = tank volume (m ) For tanks with volumes greater than 3180m , up to 28600 m , the K factor (m /h) is given in the table at the left. Notes: 1. The tables shown were extracted from the API 2000 Standard (Table 1, columns 1 and 2), with values converted to metrical units. 2. Useful conversion factors: 1 barrel = 42 American gallons 1 m3 = 6,29 barrels = 35,31 cu.ft

Once the flow (Q) is determined, it is possible to define the regulator model that best fits the process needs from the CELTIC regulators capacities table. It is important to keep in mind that pressure relief devices shall be designed to attend the system critical condition that would occur in case of the CELTIC failure. If it is needed to limit the CELTIC flow to lower flow values than the ones available for the smaller available seat, a separate installation of a first pressure regulator stage can be adopted, thus limiting the system flow rate. For specification of the best suitable model, please contact GASCAT.
