2013 AnalySwift

AnalySwift, LLC Spinout of Utah State University ! Launched March, 2011 ! Technology from USU, Georgia Tech Technology ! Efficient, high-fidelity modeling ! Unique mathematical approach ! Unprecedented combination of efficiency and accuracy ! Complex composites or other heterogeneous materials/structures

2013 AnalySwift

SwiftComp Micromechanics Software (also known as VAMUCH) A general-purpose micromechanics code ! Computes the complete set of effective fully-coupled, multiphysical (mechanical/thermal/electric/ magnetic) properties within one analysis ! Recovers the complete multiphysical local fields without resolving the system of equations ! Has the versatility as FEA but with only a fraction of its associated computing time ! Provides a uniform treatment for all heterogeneous materials/structures ! Requires no highly crafted boundary conditions and applied loads

Technology Benefits
! Decreased time-to-market ! Extraordinary efficiency (orders of magnitude reduction in computing time) ! Dramatically reduced engineering time ! Increased productivity ! Far more efficient and less labor intensive than other approaches ! Minimized learning curve ! Ease of use compared to other approaches ! No need for multiple runs under different boundary/load conditions ! Quality Improvements ! Best possible accuracy (no need for postprocessing calculations, which introduce more approximations) ! Expanded R&D versatility and engineering potential ! Only SwiftComp can model certain very complex structures ! Can handle any microstructure with any number of constituents

Technology Benefits (cont.) Effective properties, including laminate properties, can be calculated for a wide variety of composites: ! Layered composites, binary composites, fiber/particle reinforced composites, woven composites, porous materials, foams, and composites made using other manufacturing techniques Applications beyond composites, with any materials or structures exhibiting complex heterogeneity: ! Metals ! Heat exchangers with multiple heterogeneous cells ! Natural composites ! Biological materials (bone and brain tissue) ! Construction materials ! Stone/minerals/ice ! Many more

Technology Benefits (cont.) Statements from users: ! The high efficiency of this software is unique which saved me great computational effort compared with other products. ! SwiftComp is far more efficient when analyzing a highly heterogeneous problem. ! The program provides a valuable product for analytical groups like ours. It allows for simplifications of analytical material models so that complex conditions can be evaluated more efficiently. I believe that the program can be applicable to a wide range of modeling disciplines (e.g. Aerospace, Automotive, Civil). Interfaces available ! HyperWorks (part of Altair Partner Alliance) ! ANSYS

Basic Idea of Micromechanics

Simplify originally complex heterogeneous materials/structures by first identifying a unit cell. Next, carry out a micromechanical analysis over the unit cell to get effective properties, then treat the original heterogeneous material as an imaginary homogeneous material with the effective properties. Thus, the original analysis of heterogeneous material is thus replaced with a simpler analysis with homogeneous materials.

Number of elements: 311,296

Number of elements: 4864 +128

Same idea applied to analyze heterogeneous structures. While very expensive to simulate the system with direct FEA, instead carrying out a micromechanical analysis to obtain effective properties and then doing homogenized FEA results in significant efficiency savings.

Main Applications of SwiftComp Micromechanics (cont.)

Normally difficult to model, woven composites can be straightforward with SwiftComp if one has properly created a finite element mesh

Main Applications of SwiftComp Micromechanics (cont.) SwiftComp can also be applied to sandwich structures with corrugated cores in the panels (unit cell) or other structures with engineered heterogeneities, such as heat exchangers SwiftComp can be applied to any system that has modal scale features for dramatic time savings

Despite very different unit cells, SwiftComp is unique in its ability to predict the same material properties. This is more accurate, as these as the original material remains the same, thus its properties should also remain the same.

Technical Example 5- Handling Wavy Microstructure

Rectangular Unit Cell

Wavy Unit Cell SwiftComp allows curved unit cells (i.e. curved reinforcements), enabling more regular mesh to avoid distortion you normally expect. Regardless of the unit cell used, will can calculate the same material properties and same local fields.
