[Aromatherapy Box instructions continued from www.rightangleweave.com refer to this website for materials list and procedure overview.

First a long rectangle is made, composed of the box front (rose), bottom (green with rose, citrine and sapphire edges), back (rose), and lid (green). This is worked vertically (i.e., top to bottom) in 5 long adjacent rows, starting at the lower left corner of the rose front square.

Figure 1 For the first weave, measure an outstretched-arms length of thread, put a needle on each end, adjust the thread tails on each needle so that theyre both the same length and the thread is at a comfortable working length. String one Rose Luster bead and let it hang in the middle of the thread. With your left needle pick up a Rose Matte and a Rose Luster bead; with your right needle, pick up one Rose Matte bead, then cross through the Rose Luster bead on the left needle. Check to be sure the resulting 4-bead diamond is still positioned in the middle of your thread, adjust if necessary, and tack it down with the masking tape. As I find it easiest to do this weave working upward, the mat is rotated 180 degrees at the start of the down rows (shaded on charts).

Refer to the charts for the sequence of bead pick-ups and stitch-throughs as you work your way through the mat. The starting point for each section is the lower left corner of each chart, to match the sequence of the squares in the mat. The crossing beads are underlined on the charts. However, if the crossing bead is not specified, it is always the last bead on whichever needle picks up the multiple beads. (Note: If you use the single-needle stitch, the crossing bead in each section of the chart is the bead from which your thread should emerge at the end of each stitch.) Finish the first section of the mat by tying a knot and tucking it under the last GL bead. Each side (one blue, one yellow) is then added to the rectangular mat, worked up and down from left to right. Start each side by measuring an outstretched-arms-length of thread, stitching through the appropriate side bead on the mat, and centering the two lengths of thread on this starter bead, just as you did when picking up the very first bead for the first weave. Finish each side by tying a knot and tucking it under the last outside matte bead. Whenever you need to start a new length of thread, heres one method: 1) After doing one last cross, tie off the short ends of your expiring length of thread with a surgeons knot. Dont pull it really tight just yet, but run one needle back through an adjacent side bead so youll be able to pull the knot inside this bead. 2) Put your needles on a new length of thread, go back 3 weaves, stitch through a crossing bead, and adjust your new thread so that this bead is in the center. Weave the ends of the new thread upward until they emerge from the opposite holes of the last crossing bead. 3) Pull the ends of the knot in the old thread so that it tightens up and hides itself inside the side bead. The illustration shows where I had to start a new thread inside the green square for the boxs bottom. Measure about a yard of thread to complete the rectangular mat from this point.

Stitching Up the Sides Start with the tails of thread emerging from either the blue side or the yellow side. Fold this side up against the rose side closest to it, aligning the Lt Rose Matte beads with either the Light Orange beads or the Sapphire Luster beads, depending upon which side youre starting with. Assuming the thread emerging from the top of the LO/SL bead (i.e., the thread closest to the top edge of the box) is in your left hand, [optional not done in sample pick up 1 Aqua Matte bead], stitch down through the adjacent RM bead, and pick up an Aqua Matte bead. With your other needle (presumably in your right hand), cross through the AM bead. Continue to zip up the sides, stitching through RM on the left and LO/SL on the right, with an AM for the crossing bead, ending with a knot under the final AM bead. Use the tails from the other side for the next hinge. For hinges #3 and #4, measure about 15 of thread, and start at the top of the hinge [picking up 1 Aqua Matte is optional], then zip up the hinge in the same manner as the first two.

Inside Flange, pt. 1 Well start this on the inside of the rose front. Find the Rose Luster bead 2nd down from the top edge 2nd over from the edge on your left. This is your starting bead. Measure about a yard of thread and stitch through this bead so that your two needles are centered on it and emerging on the inside of your box. The needle closest to the side hinge should be in your left hand. Well be working counter-clockwise around the inside perimeter of the box. 1) Left needle pick up 3 Navajo Pearl beads; Right needle cross through the last bead on left. 2) Right needle stitch through the next Rose Luster bead on the front (i.e., bead #3 over, 2 down); Left needle pick up 2 NP Right cross through last NP on left. 3) Same as above 4) Right stitch through RL, then across corner through Citrine Matte Left pick up 1 NP Right cross through NP (youve now turned the corner and are working alongside the yellow side) 5) Right Stitch through CM Left pick up 2 NP Right cross 6) Same as above 7) Same as above 8) Another corner. Right stitch through CM, RL (2nd row down) Left pick up 1 NP Right cross 9) Right stitch through RL L pick up 2 NP Right cross 10) Same as above 11) Same as above 12) Another corner. Right stitch through RL, Sapphire Matte (2nd row down) Left pick up 1 NP Right cross 13) Right stitch through SM Left pick up 2 NP Right cross 14) Same as above 15) Same as above 16) Final corner Right stitch through SM, RL, Navajo Pearl #2 from 1st weave. Left cross through NP

Position your box as shown, with the two threads emerging vertically from the pearl bead. Well be working clockwise this time.

Figure 2

Inside Flange, pt. 2 1) With the lower thread, stitch from right to left through Rose Luster bead #1 on the edge of the box, then circle up through the Sapphire Matte bead #1 on the adjacent edge of the box. With the upper thread, stitch through the Navajo Pearl elbow bead sticking out from the flange, pick up another NP. Cross through this bead. 2) Left stitch through SM Right stitch through NP, pick up 1 NP Left cross 3) Same as above 4) Same as above 5) First corner. Left stitch through SM, across corner and through Rose Luster (top edge), pick up 1 NP Right cross through NP 6) Left stitch through RL Right stitch through NP, pick up 1 NP Left cross 7) Same as above 8) Same as above 9) Second corner. Left stitch through RL, across corner and through Citrine Matte (top edge), pick up 1 NP Right cross through NP 10) Left stitch through CM Right stitch through NP, pick up 1 NP Left cross 11) Same as above 12) Same as above 13) Third corner. Left stitch through CM, across corner and through RL (top edge), pick up 1 NP Right cross through NP 14) Left stitch through RL Right stitch through NP, pick up 1 NP Left cross 15) Same as above 16) Same as above 17) Closing the square. Left stitch through RL, SM (the same corner beads we started with). Right Stitch through the NP. Knot and pull knot under NP bead.

Reinforcing the sides Well be using the long tails still left from hinges #1 and #2 (which should be emerging from both sides of the AM bead at the bottom of their respective hinges). This is peyote stitch, so you only need to thread one needle at a time. Use the Dark Rose Matte beads. With each thread (i.e., 4 times because we have 4 threads), well work up the hinge, across the top, down the hinge, and across the bottom back to the starting point. Stitch up through closest hinge bead, pick up a DRM bead, stitch through next hinge bead. Do this 3 more times (for a total of 4 DRM beads). [If youve used the optional Aqua Matte bead at the top of the hinge, just stitch through it here] Cross over corner and stitch through the first bead of top edge, pick up a DRM bead, stitch through next edge beads, etc. (again for a total of 4 DRM beads.) [If youve used the optional Aqua Matte bead at the top of the hinge, just stitch through it here] Cross over the corner and peyote stitch your next 4 DRM beads, then around the bottom corner and another 4 DRM beads until youre back at your starting point. Tie off your threads under the Aqua Matte corner beads. Glue all knots. When the glue is thoroughly dry (like overnight!), clip the thread ends. This pattern seems to scale well to size 11/0 seed beads. The green and white box illustrated is the first box I made, and uses 11/0s. The box using size 6/0 beads was designed to be: 1) A relatively quick bead sketch to work out design variations; 2) something fun to make for a beginner learning right angle weave. Try using your word processor if youd like to substitute different color choices into the instructions and grids. If you adapt & re-publish these instructions (e.g., work out the single-needle stitch path, change the colors or size, modify the sequence whatever) kindly give me credit for doing the groundwork by using the following statement: Adapted from the original tutorial by C.
