Unit: Gmail & Electronic Communication (Week 1, 2 Weeks)

Stage 1: Desired Results


Standards NETS: Educational Technology (2007), NETS: All Grades, NETS.S: The Next Generation 2. Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Students:

a. interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts or others employing a variety of digital environments and media. b. communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats

3. Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Students:

a. plan strategies to guide inquiry. b. locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media.

4. Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving & Decision-Making Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources. Students:

a. identify and define authentic problems and significant questions for investigation. d. use multiple processes and diverse perspectives to explore alternative solutions.

Enduring Understandings By the end of the unit, students will understand how to send and use electronic communication effectively using introductory and advanced features of Gmail while knowing how email is sent and received around the world.

Why is Gmail a good tool to use for electronic communication? How does email get sent across the world? How does technology affect communication? How can Gmail be used more effectively to save time in sending email? How can Gmail features enhance daily emails sent?

Stage 2:Assessment Evidence


Assessment Daily Question Assessment (New) Email Application

Informal Assessments Personal Project At the start of class the teacher will pose review questions to the class which they answer online and their answers are Email Setup cumulatively available for the teacher to review to check for Performance Assessment understanding. The objective in this activity is to give the teacher and the student a written record of cognitive engagement on the part of the student. Quiz Skills Recall Assessment Several times per unit, a short open note quiz will be administered during class. The purpose of the quiz is to assess students on their progress toward mastery of primary skills in each part of the unit. The quiz questions will be taken directly from the material that was taught and reviewed. Dialogue In Class Participation Students interact through answering class discussion questions through voluntary participation. Self Assessment Students write a reflective summary of their works progress each quarter as well as what they would like to do to improve. Students take daily notes in their class notebook on content taught by the teacher in class. Application Project Students work on a quarterly project that challenges the student to apply the content learned in class.
