Sopanam - January-February 2014

Editorial
Seva Darshan has concluded its one year celebration of
the 150th year birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
The year 2013 has been celebrated as the 150th birth
anniversary of Swamiji. In Kuwait, Seva Darshan and
its affiliates celebrated the anniversary with different
programmes over the year that included seminars,
essay writing competitions, painting exhibitions, fancy
dress competitions, the Gokulotsavam festival for our
Bala Darshan children, the Viveka Darshanam musical
drama on Swamiji's life that was presented at the mega
programme Bharath Vikas and so on. We believe we
have been able to spread the importance of Swamiji's
message to a wide spectrum of the expatriate society in
Kuwait, to a certain extent.

our young generation, as International Ambassadors

of Future India. In another 20 or 30 years from now,
our Nation would be leading the world in terms of
intellectual minds, young leaders and a culturally well
spirited society. With the revolution of time, new ideas
and new concepts evolve in every society. But with the
blessings of our ancient gurus and leaders like Swamiji
we have been gifted with the ability to choose what is
right for the Nation as a whole. This alone has kept alive
the oldest civilization in the world. Countless invasions
and destruction have happened in our nation, yet we
remain united. We want our young generation to set a
goal for themselves. We would want them to set aside at
least one hour a day in the service of their nation.

With the advent of Makar Sankranti which is a

festival that brings change, the programmes came to an
end with the Yuva for India camp and Vivekadarshanam
lecture. Makar Sankranti is a festival for us to celebrate
and renew our energies for the year ahead. For us in
Kuwait It is truly a historic celebration as it is probably
the first time we are celebrating it with a programme
exclusively for our young generation.

What can be done from Kuwait, being so far away

from India. There are many things you could do. You
could do services like offering to help under privileged
friends in studies in Kuwait and in India. Our Bala
Darshan students have embarked on a unique seva
activity where they celebrate the birthdays of their
friends by going to their home and receiving a donation
that is sent to more than 190 seva sadanams supported
by Seva Darshan in India. This is what we do in Yuva
Darshans monthly classes, a practical implementation
of Swamijis thoughts. This is just a tip of the iceberg
and we welcome more initiatives from our children and
the driving force behind them, the parents.

Swami Vivekananda as been hailed as the youth icon

of India. A personality, so dynamic that he has been an
aspiring hero for many generations. Swamiji was also
probably the first cultural Ambassador of India. We see

We hope the last years programme will be an

eye opener for all socially active organizations and
individuals to bring more programmes that will help
empower our students and youngsters to become the
leaders of the world tomorrow. This mammoth work
of nation building is not doable by one person or a
few people. For this work, organized efforts of lakhs
and crores of people filled with one goal in mind
are needed. Let this effort of an organized group of
dedicated, focused and strong youth spread to every
nook and corner of India. Then we will see a beautiful
picture of a new Yuga filled with hope and enthusiasm
everywhere. For every nation, for every society, for
every individual citizen, it is essential to have a role
model. Your role model could be your parents, your
Guru, or modern day heroes. But, for a broader vision
that will ensure your action and your deeds will be
beneficial for the upliftment of your Nation, your role
model must be someone whose life was dedicated for
the Nation. Someone whose message has stood the test
of time and someone whose words will be relevant even
100 years and more from now. As students, as adults,
as parents, as leaders, your dedication must be to the
nation and this alone will ensure the strong India that
Swami Vivekananda envisioned.
In the coming days we would see follow up camps
of Yuva For India and many programmes that would
definitely be informative and help us shape our view
of our nation and who we are. We thank you all for the
support that you have always extended to us.
Vande Mataram and Good luck to you all

Diffusers of Indian tradition

and culture

Reshmy Krishnakumar

The Indian community today can be considered

as a unique and inevitable force in the entire world.
During the British reign Indians were sent abroad
mainly to the war front or as laborers at different
parts of the British Empire. Later, many traders left
to different parts, following their ancestors. And
now the current status is that the drift of Indian
brain power is a world-wide phenomenon forming
a team of knowledge and skill abroad.

of regional cuisines which date back to many

decades. Indian dishes are unique with more of
vegetables, fruits, spices and herbs. The increasing
number of Indian restaurants abroad with ample
customers is a live evidence for this matter.
Traditional Indian chutneys, pickles and sweets
have high demand. Indian cuisines are mainly
based on vegetarianism and even the western world
is much attracted to it.

Emerging as a powerful nation in the economic

world, India is now the center of attraction of
investors worldwide. The expatriate Indian
community is important not only at an economic
point of view, but also at keeping the image of
India. They portray the cultural diversity which
is incredible specialty of our homeland. Diversity
of Indian culture can be seen in a variety of areas
like religion, festivals, tastes, clothing, literature,
dance forms, music, paintings, architecture,
cinema, medicine etc. These are propagated to the
bread winning land of each individual across the
world. That magnificent heritage and educational
excellence which was the personal pride of India
got unveiled.

Under the guidance of Indian embassy in any

country, different Indian community unites and
organizes events which showcase our talents.
Even the folklore of different states has got wide
acceptance. Classics in the film industry are viewed
in spite of the language and national barriers. Our
expertise in all fields are now accepted and rewarded.
Efforts to put on an event like a film festival proved
to be an ideal platform to introduce our legends
to the world and for expatriate talents to express
their issues, emotions and creativity through the
powerful medium of cinema. Educational quality,
excellence and hard work maintained by overseas
community also contributed to the increased
reliability of an Indian among other nationals.

The chances we got to interact with different

nationalities obviously resulted in a silent illustration
of our culture over years of acquaintance. Expatriate
Indian youth along with the younger generations of
other nations got more attached to our traditions.
Now we can find students and researchers from
outside, spending time and energy to learn more
about India including Ayurveda, Yoga, classical art
forms, traditional architecture, painting patterns
and sculpture etc.

People from different parts of India residing

in other countries worldwide always showed a
strong bond with their motherland. In the fast
pace of life they never missed the essence of our
traditions. They adhered to the spiritual as well as
the socio-cultural inheritance. With the feel of a
true Indian, they celebrated all the religious and
regional festivals with added enthusiasm. As the
children of one mother, India, they stood together
in each others needs. It was this oneness and love
for the motherland which brought to them the feel
to propagate their vibrant culture and tradition to
the land they live.

Foreigners make a choice to experience the

traditional tastes of India which consist of hundreds

Farwaniya Bala Darshan

conducted a Group Discussion
Nurturing and educating a child is not a big challenge but giving guidance to become a self-reliant
and honorable human being is the real challenge". Bringing up of children is a great art and science. It
can be accomplished if parents have the right knowledge about parenting. Good parents can help to
shape the character and destiny of children. How can you be a good parent?
Farwaniya Bala Darshan conducted a group discussion on Challenges and Solutions for Parenting
in Todays life. It was conducted in three different sessions and was organized by Sri. Prabhakaran, the
joint secretary for Bala Darshan Kuwait. The meet was presided over by Sri. Praveen, Farwaniya area
coordinator of Seva Darshan Kuwait. Most of the parents from Farwaniya actively attended the program.
They shared their valuable ideas during the interactive session. The success of the programme would be
taken up in the different Bala Darshans in the coming days. The function concluded by the vote of thanks
by Smt. Dhanya Ramesh.

Cancer fighters from the spice

Dr. jaganadh
bowl of world
India is considered as the spice bowl of the
world and Indian cuisines are characterized with
extensive usage of spices. Apart from the unique
taste and flavour it gives the food we are well
aware of its medicinal values. As an extension to
that realization, here comes the information that
some of them are good cancer fighters. Spices like
turmeric when included in our food habits from
childhood, it strengthens our inherent immunity
power. Interestingly, Indian spices are mentioned
even in the four Vedas. Curcumin which is a
turmeric derivative contains the polyphenol that
hold back the growth of many types of cancerous
cells. It helps in safe elimination of cancer
breeding cells without affecting the nearby healthy
ones. In cases of conventional radiotherapy and
chemotherapy, the surrounding cells as well as
cancer cells are targeted. Fennel seeds are rich
is Anethole which restricts the adhesive and
invasive activities of cancer cells. It overpowers
the enzyme regulated activities in favour of cancer
cell multiplication. A tomato-fennel soup with
garlic or fresh salads with fennel bulbs make for
an ideal starter. Roasted fennel with parmesan can
be another idea pick. Saffron contains Crocetin
which is the primary cancer-fighting element. It

seeds checks proliferation of cells responsible
for prostate cancer. Thymoquinone compound
contained in cumin seeds helps this action. By
adding cumin seeds to our daily food habits we are
not only enhancing its flavour but making the dish
rich in healthy factor. Cinnamon is usually known
as a natural food preservative. Being an ample
source of iron and calcium it helps reducing tumor
growth and restricts the development of new vessels
in the human body. Oregano is another potential
agent against prostate cancer. Its anti-microbial
compound restricts the growth of malignant cells
in the body and acts like a drug against cancercentric diseases.
