Military surveillance departments are grappling with newer and tougher challenges in terms of efficient voice identity verification. Some of the immediate challenges include: In-field detection of speakers is crucial for timely intervention and preventive action. Soldiers need to be equipped with the ability to identify target voices in real time for efficient surveillance. Inability to conduct real time detection limits the capabilities of surveillance departments. Traditional voice verification systems may not be able to provide real time and accurate support due to dependence on variable such as language, channel, and text. Identification of key targets could be highly challenging without deploying a language, channel, and text independent voice verification system. Inaccurate results in identification of key targets through interceptions of telephonic (landline, cellular, and VOIP) conversations with multiple speakers could lead to fragmented intelligence and increased number of calls needed for interception. Voice identification system designed for speed could possibly reduce the number of calls required for mass voice interception, but may not be capable of ensuring seamless coordination between information collected through surveillance sensors and control center. Without coordination, data collected through surveillance centers cannot be put into the right perspective. Apart from coordination between information centers, there is also a growing need to facilitate homogeneity, compatibility, and easy transfer of voice data between various systems to ensure coherent intelligence. Lack of homogeneity between systems could lead to a disorganized and ineffective voice data verification process. Existing systems are not capable of handling the voice data collected and stored in large voice depositories due to lack of effective data mining tools. Without the ability to classify or tag individuals through voice identification effective military intelligence cannot be achieved.
