Iraq restores Russian firm's contract for 26.8-MW Al Adaim

07/21/2008 Iraq's Ministry of Energy has renewed a contract with Russian equipment supplier Power Machines to supply generating equipment to the 26.8-MW Al Adaim hydroelectric project in northern Iraq. Although Power Machines won the contract in 2001, it was frozen in 2003 due to the invasion of Iraq. Deliveries were withheld, with parts of turbines and generators held in safekeeping. Power Machines is to supply two turbines, two generators of 13.4 MW each, and auxiliary mechanical and electrical systems. The Russian firm is to install and commission the equipment on a turnkey basis. Shipment of equipment will be made by November. The project is to be commissioned in July 2010. Power Machines' Middle East department head, Farid Dyomin, told Moscow Times the company is in talks to resume work at another Iraqi project, the 256-MW Makkul hydroelectric project. That estimated US$122 million contract also was suspended after the invasion.
