Collective Effort

What might we accomplish working toward

shared goals of helping kids in high poverty
areas that we cannot do when working alone?

Daniel F. Bassill created the Tutor/Mentor Connection (T/MC) in Chicago in 1993 after
leading a single volunteer-based tutor/mentor program from 1975 to 1992. His goal was
to help all youth serving programs in the region attract resources needed to innovate and
constantly improve, including a new program for teens that he and six other volunteers
launched at the same time as they created the T/MC. Bassill still leads this strategy in
2023, via the Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC, formed in 2011. Pg 2

To help programs grow, cities first need to know what programs
exist, who they serve, and what type of services they provide.

How many existing

tutor/mentor programs

helping youth move
through school and
into 21st century jobs
and careers?

Every city in America with areas of concentrated poverty needs a strategy
supporting youth programs the way the Tutor/Mentor Connection has piloted in
Chicago. Don't “reinvent the wheel”. Use our history as a template.

Think of Collective Effort as building resources that help all programs.

Teams of volunteer and professional leaders are needed to support individual programs,
neighborhoods full of great programs, and cities with great programs reaching K-12 youth
in every high poverty area.

We can increase resources for all of us, and lower the costs of getting these resources, if
multiple programs build this collaboration strategy into their own actions.
