From Conflict Resolution to Conflict Transformation Conflict resolution can be too focused on the issue while the (Lederach, 2003) conflict transformation involves the change on both parties which emphasizes the importance of building relationships and social structures. In the school, discipline must go beyond sanctions. Instead, constructive strategies to resolve conflicts among students (ending something not desired) and to transform disputants relationships (building something desired) are options that are doable and more peaceful. The Peaceable Classroom Why? It is necessary in the process of learning. What? (William Kreidler) Characterized by affirmation, cooperation, communication, appreciation for diversity, appropriate expression of feelings and peaceful conflict resolution One where students feel safe and secure and where they grow as persons without threats. Damaged self-esteem is one of the known effects of bullying. Ways to Help Create Atmosphere of Love and Acceptance in Classrooms: a. Declare your classroom a zone of peace and establish rules to achieve it. b. As the teacher, let the peace begin with you c. Affirm your students. d. Express feelings appropriately and encourage students to do so. e. Encourage respect for and acceptance of differences. f. Employ more cooperative than competitive activities. g. Teach students how to resolve conflicts peacefully and constructively. h. Practice students skills of communication. Toward a Whole School Approach What? It includes the engagement of all areas (members of the school community, wider community, teaching practices and methods, student activities, administrative policies, school structures and relationships, and the social action with the larger community). Why? It promotes consistency of peace message and values found in the various aspects of the school and community that will facilitate and reinforce the intended learning. It must be a counterculture to the dominant paradigm and be an initiator and facilitator of needed transformation.
