Objective
1. To introduce the concept of a primary somatic dysfunction 2. To present the most common models of dysfunction and their implications in movement 3. To show an association between these models and use them as a guide to clinical reasoning and treatment strategies 4. To relate the knowledge of these to common clinical conditions
Course Overview
Pain and inflammation Local adaptation syndrome (start of the primary dysfunction) Global adaptation syndrome (full body implications) Crossed syndromes Postural relief position 3D model of dysfunction Foot dysfunction model Fascial preferences and compensating patterns Clinical correlation discussion and the common factors model of a successful therapy program
Course Description
Learn how a dorsiflexion limitation could lead to back pain or hamstring strains ipsilaterally and ITB problems contralaterally. Find out how neck and shoulder pain can be addressed by simple adjustments in the breathing pattern and why limitations in overhead shoulder motions can lead to back pain and spasms in certain people. This seminar-workshop is about assessment. Manual therapy is not just about techniques. Its about an assessment-based perspective that takes into account multiple factors of enhancing movement and function. The most effective treatment strategies are the ones that are based on thorough assessments. The aim of this seminar-workshop is to present assessment strategies that would help the clinician determine their focus of treatment regardless of their technique or level of experience. Assessments are movement-related and more global instead of regional because oftentimes we see chains of dysfunctions in tissues leading to patterns of faulty movement. The participants will be encouraged to see regional interdependence of movement across the body and then focus on finding the most prominent cause of dysfunction. Psychosocial determinants must also be considered.
