Thaakat Foundation l 2013

The goal of education is not just to create doctors and lawyers that can help our villages prosper but to create a conscientious civil society filled with forward-looking community members. Through Thaakats literacy programs, students have helped their parents file bills, read letters and signs and have taken an active stand to encourage other children to attend. In just a short time, our little ones have already become teachers and leaders in the making, paving a promising future for their community without even knowing it.

Letter from the Board of Directors

When we begin our year we dont necessarily know what lies ahead but maybe thats a good thing. It leaves room to help people who urgently need it, room to listen with our hearts and ears to the stories of people around the world. This year we adopted our third global project, a free school we support in Tanoboase, Ghana. This school which started with 2 children now has more than 50. As you hear these children boast with pride when they read the alphabet, one can only wonder how much we take education for granted. Thousands of miles away from Righteous and his school in Ghana, what seemed like a dusty dream far into the future is now a reality with our school at Dreams for Kachra Kundi in Karachi, Pakistan. This facility has flourished to host more than 440 students. Many children walk from great distances to attend and while many girls have fought to break cultural molds to attend. We brought Break the Silence full circle this year, raising more than $7000 for organizations and women in need of a voice around the world. Violence against women hits home for us. There are mornings we receive reports of girls being punished in attempt to fight for their right to an education. These girls are students at our school sites. Last but certainly not least, our maternity center, which is now complete in structure, is successful far beyond our expectations. Thanks to our village manager Philip, we have a facility that has set new standards for all healthcare structures in the nearby communities. We can talk for days without taking a breath. Thaakat is not a hobby for our team, it is our life. Our goal is to do good, stand for good and encourage good near to us and far from us. We are not always confident that we can make our goals, but we are determined to and you never let us fail. We know that somewhere, a future mother, teacher or doctor is waiting to get to the end of his or her ABCs and all they need is a little nudge from us to help them get there. A sincere thank you to all of our supporters, partners, sponsors and especially school chapters who confirm that we are not just placed on this earth to have a good time, to have nice cars and homes but that we are here to serve a purpose to others who need us.

Income Statement for Fiscal Year 2013 Explained

Otherwise known as Where Money Comes From and Where it Goes A. Our income came from 4 main areas. These were-- Chapter Fundraisers, Corporate Contributions, Public Donations & Business Sponsorships. As a small organization we are very proud to say that more than 60% [$65,000] of donations come from our donors What Makes and the general public. The remainder of donations came in from Corporate Contributions. These contributions are Thaakat Unique? often received on behalf of employee matches, contributions from the company on behalf of employee 100% transparency. volunteer hours or grants to support our programs that the Every dollar you company has felt in close alignment to and in support of. B. Donations sent to maintain, grow and progress our charitable projects are known as Your support has allowed Project us to donate more than Expenses. Any donations required to sustain these $87,000 this year. This is projects will fall under this category. These are things nearly DOUBLE such as teacher salaries, construction, books, healthcare, medicines etc. [$45,000]what we were Please note that your support has allowed us to donate more than $87,000 this year. This is nearly DOUBLE [$45,000] what we were able to donate in 2012 and TRIPLE [$25,000] what we were able to donate in 2011. Your donations have helped us to not only adopt a third global village, but they have helped us to provide resources at these sites that have made it easier to get through the day (ie. transportation, food, expansion) C. Our overhead expenses [$8,000] from 2013 have come down by almost 30% from PY. This decreased is attributed to less expensive event venues, fewer events and most importantly sponsors who have been willing to provide us resources at our events so that we do not need to rent / buy things such as projectors, screens, mics, speakers etc..

donate goes directly to the intended recipients.

able to donate in 2012 and TRIPLE [$25,000] what we were able to donate in 2011.

A large portion of these overhead expenses was also dedicated to financial management and reporting of our funds by a professional third party vendor. With the growth in funds, we felt it most appropriate to leverage a third party to help us maintain accountability to the public and government. Lastly, Our Cont Education and Leadership program was funded by APPNA and corporate sponsors. This was a program initiated by APPNA to highlight wonderful leaders and members of our Thaakat Chapters. **It is important to note that all overhead expenses are fully covered by corporate contributions, sponsors and internally raised funds. 100% of public donations are reserved for our charitable projects. D. Why is Net Ordinary Income negative? Its good news! Weve donated EVERYTHING that came in to us in 2013 but we were not in deficit by year end. We truly put our donations to work and thankfully had some cushion to cover needs beyond what we raised this year thanks to retained income from 2012.

3 Reasons You Should Volunteer

Make a Friend- There is no such thing as having too many friends. Volunteering allows you to meet people with different perspectives and yes, different perspectives are important. There is more to life than Making $$- Stop thinking of it as doing work, because you arent going to get money for it. You are paid in experiences, opportunities and smiles. Cancel out Bad Karma- We believe that doing something good gives you the chance to make up for that terrible thing that you did a long time ago. You know like borrowing your sisters toothbrush and never letting her know. Were BIG on volunteering at Thaakat. This means waking up early on the weekends, getting your hands dirty and scurrying around town to convince businesses that they should take part in the mission. Lend a hand, whether through Thaakat or elsewhere; we promise you, it will be just as fun as a night out at the movies.

Break the Silence: Standing up for women around the world

In 2013 we said that we would give the Break the Silence campaign all we had. We sure did! More than $7000 was donated across people, projects and individuals who were working to empower women and financially support their independence and journey onto better things.
By keeping silent you condone this atrocious behavior, BUT by speaking up, against domestic violence and taking a stand you break the cycle and work towards eradicating this disease. Executive Director Zillehuma Hasan at Wafa House

So HOW did our donations and campaigns really make IMPACT?

$1000 : Non Profit Start Up, The Emergency Fund $500: Non Profit Organization, Unchained at Last $1000: Non Profit Organization, Wafa House $4000: A young mother fighting for the right to keep her son- she won her case! $250: Habitat for Humanity, Jaipuir India $250: Crystal Garza, Funeral Expenses
I can't tell you what this means to me. Thank you so very much for what you've done for The Emergency Fund. My board members and I are putting the finishing touches on our ideas and I'll be filing the paperwork within a few days/weeks. My forever gratefulness, Kellie Jo Holly, The Emergency Fund

Empowering Women through Our Projects

Awareness to help curb violence is just a part of the goal. We hope to bring Break the Silence full circle so that our projects also create a foundation for empowering women in the communities we support. 8th grade student from Dreams for Kachra Kundi, Shaheen wrote to us this year. She wanted us to know the kind of struggles girls in her community face every day for the right to an education.

Everyone has dreams. I too want to have a dream. These dreams are only possible through an education. When I receive that education and I start to reach my goals, I know that I will be inspired to continue to receive more learning. I will want to set new goals. In the future I want to be able to teach other girls. I want to help those girls whose families are also stopping them from receiving an education. Shaheen

Rema is a 6th grade student at the same school site. After enrolling in classes, she showed up to class in tears. Our site principal pulled her aside and found she had a broken arm. Her brother had broken her arm as a punishment for attending classes. The mentality towards the progression of literacy and education for females is often regressive, especially in poorer communities. Elders perceive a girl who wants to get an education as child who wants to SPEAK OUT against the rules. In fact, she is just trying to gain the ability to SPEAK UP for herself.

13

Our principal meets individually with families to ensure that all have an appropriate understanding of the need for educating their little girls. Our school is making strides currently 40% of 440 students are female. The safety and future of these girls is of our utmost priority. He has met with both Shaheen and Remas family to ensure that such issues will no longer continue.

Did You Know?

Women aged 15-44 are more at risk from rape and domestic violence than from cancer, car

accidents, war and malaria.

The Gift of Giving: SAVE DAVE

At THAAKAT, we support people and projects that are in a critical mission; a mission to progress, to succeed, to LIVE. Recently we came across the story of a sweet gentleman who is fighting every day to survive. Dave Peek was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (a scarring of the lung tissue). Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic and ultimately fatal disease characterized by a progressive decline in lung function. The only thing that can SAVE DAVE is a Lung Transplant. Dave was laid off of work after 25 years at his company. If he wants any sort of treatment he must continue with COBRA insurance which is costing him $400 a month. Thanks to our corporate donors we were able to gift DAVE $1400 to help him cover his medical costs. How has IPF been affecting DAVE? IPF has stolen my life and there is nothing you can do about it. You cannot breathe; you cannot catch your breath. I have a great family who supports me and loves me so no worries there, but every day is a struggle. Every day things like taking a shower are always interesting- trying to catch your breath, trying to change clothes, but Im not complaining. I just got out of the hospital on Monday. The meds Im on lower my immune system so I am much more susceptible to common illnesses. One misconception people have about IPF is that people think smoking causes IPF and this is not always the case. You could be living a healthy life as a non- smoker but it will and can find you. What does DAVE wish for? I wish more people where aware that IPF is a life ending disease. I would like more research to be done on the disease, on how it develops, how we can protect ourselves, on more treatment options.

As of February 2014, DAVE has been approved to be on the TRANSPLANT LIST!

I am Save Dave's wife of 35 years. I am praying that we have at least that many more together:) I am so touched by what your foundation has done for him that I have tears streaming down my face once again while I am writing this to you. This means so much to our sweet lil' family. The donation will be such a great help to keep his insurance. Beyond that, the human kindness that you and your foundation have shared with us has touched our family in a way that words cannot describe:) Thank-you so very much, Diana

Our Chapters Share a Word..

Ultimately, diversity is important so that we can get perspective and realize that our success is no single act of achievement, but must be done collectively if any of us are going to get anywhere, or do anything outstanding. Christian E. Locklayer, Thaakat Atlanta

If you want people to listen to you, you have to show that you are passionate about the cause. Share information with others like it means something to you. Educate them on facts. Most important: - Be Lively - Communicate Well - Spread Love Aqsa Bawany, President, Thaakat Benedictine

This journey has been an unforgettable one that has shaped my life. I always thought that I would never be able to accomplish and rise to where this team stands today, but with each member that has taken part in Thaakats mission, we are exceeding any expectations we had when we first started. Local Volunteerism & Outreach

Spring 2013: Volunteering at New York Asian Womens Center (Queens, New York)
Every spring we volunteer at the New York Asian Womens Center to bring a change of pace to the women and children there. It is here that weve adopted a Peace Garden where we plant herbs, vegetables, and flowers that the women and children can tend to during the year and incorporate into their everyday meals in the kitchen! This year, the children were even more anxious to see us. While we tended to the peace garden with the children, the women got together to cut out words and images from magazines that represented them. Here was their final board filled with freedom, courage, love and hope. The event is so important for us and we are thankful for the opportunity to work with them. New York Asian Womens Center helps women and their children overcome domestic violence and other forms of abuse by empowering them to govern their own lives. NYAWC provides a safe haven through multilingual support programs and shelter services. In addition, NYAWC works to raise public awareness about violence against women, advocates for the rights of survivors, and acts as an agent of social change.

Winter 2013: Holiday Good2Gether Hamdard Center (Chicago, Illinois)

Like every year, this winter, Thaakat made its way to the Hamdard Center for an afternoon to celebrate Holiday 'Good2gether' with nearly 40 loving seniors. The day was led by our chapter at Benedictine University; Thaakat Benedictine brought along nearly 20 volunteers. Thaakateers and volunteers worked with the seniors in creating arts and crafts, enjoying lunch and conversations, playing musical chairs and singing along to Christmas Carols. They were also greeted by the Thaakat Santa Clause! This annual event not only teaches us the value of culture and elders but also allows us to bring joy and smiles to many faces. Thank you, Hamdard Center for allowing us to collaborate and enjoy this wonderful event. The Hamdard Center is a Multilingual, Multi-cultural Social & Health Service Agency dedicated to serving the South Asian, Middle Eastern and the Bosnian communities in Illinois.

The seniors were thrilled at spending time with the young people! The entire Thaakat team is so respectful towards the seniors and staff. They did a great job with keeping everything on time and organized. Thank you! Kiran S. Siddiqui, M.Ed, LCPC Chief Operating Officer Hamdard Center For Health & Human Services

Fundraisers
(Chicago, Illinois) 4th Annual Charity Lunch Benefit & Auction
Thaakat held its 4th annual Fundraiser on August 24 th at Belvedere Banquets. The lunch headlined pronounced comedian, Aman Ali known for his appearances on CNN, HBO and various other media outlets. With an attendance of nearly 200 guests, Thaakat was able to raise over $9,000 for its Global Projects. Thank you to our amazing sponsors and donors for their contribution to the event and auction to make it successful.

(New Jersey)- July 4th Weekend

Eager to help Righteous in his cause for a free school in Ghana, we knew we had to fundraise and we had to do it quick. Righteous was ready to move forward with construction and we felt we had to be moved to make change- now or never. Thanks to our generous hosts at Maya Hookah Lounge, autographed boxing gloves from Amir Khan and special gifts from sponsors we were able to reach our goal of $5000.

Feed The Need: 4th Annual Charity Basketball Tournament (Oakbrook, Illinois)
Feed The Need was Thaakat Foundations 4th annual charity basketball tournament in 2013, which raised funds for our Global Projects. The two-day tournament commenced November 24 at the Oak Brook Park District. Each year, teams begin preparation to undergo what is considered to be two days of grueling competition, showing up early mornings, half-awake and leaving in the evening wide-eyed and exhausted. To keep spirits high, many fans arrived with signs not only to shore up their favorite teams, but to also support the Kachra Kundi campaign. To get further involvement from the crowd, a nail biting free throw contest was held with a twist this time; everyone got a second chance. There were plenty of other activities to participate in such as the raffle prizes, picture booth, bags, a nd more. Many of the board members and volunteers (affectionately known as Thaakateers) tended to score keeping, serving food and drinks, taking pictures, and anything else needed to make this yet another one of Thaakats successful event. At the end of the day (or two), one team walked away as champions. Nonetheless, no team truly acknowledged defeat as each dribble of the ball on the court represented a bounce closer to literacy. All proceeds that were generated were from registration fees of $250, food sales, Thaakat accessories, and of course our beloved sponsors. So where did all the money go? For the purchase of books and school related expenses for students who have been unfairly destined to a life ubiquitous poverty. But the fight doesnt end he re. As long as there is a need, Thaakat will continue to hold their ever improving tournaments every year for as long as it takes.

Congratulations to Our Winners- 1st Place: Team MAMBA, 2nd Place: Team WARRIORS

2013 was the Year of Growth.

LOVE
At the start of the year we had the following:
A 16 room school house at Dreams for Kachra Kundi
Land to build a school in Ghana A structure of bricks and mud which set the foundation for our Maternity Center in Sierra Leone.

Dedicated people Resources

There were a few problems holding us back from progress.

We Did It.
Karachi: A new bus.

Ghana: Drilling for Water!

Sierra Leone: A new motorbike and computer.

Kachra Kundis 400 students were waiting in their classrooms until teachers arrived on time. The teachers needed a vehicle to transport them through the dangerous roads to the site, safely.
Our principal in Ghana felt that water would bring the project life but the area was sparse and dry. Our project manager lived 4 hours from the village and center and had no computer or tools to communicate with us.

Your Donations Helped Us WIN!

24

Dreams for Kachra Kundi teachers are being transported to the school in the new Suzuki that donations helped to provide. It is shaded and secure for safety and comfort.

A student at the Konadu Basic School in Ghana, excited for the new and spacious learning environment this year.

Our Manager of Project Reborn Maternity Center in Sierra Leone is excited for the opportunity to drive to the village on his own. He will no longer put his life on the line in renting bikes from strangers or by sitting through strenuous 4 hour bus rides.

Dreams for Kachra Kundi

Location: Pakistan, Al Khair Campus lll Goal: Education, Environmental Sustainability
Kachra Kundi is a large garbage dump site in Pakistan, located 50 miles away from the city of Karachi, and home to thousands who earn their livelihood from collecting waste and selling it to recycling centers. Thaakat visited the area twice and immediately knew it had to help upon hearing of the dreams little children had to go to school. Residents of this community have been deprived of basic necessities such as electricity and clean water, and previously there had been zero access to education. In 2012, we partnered with Idara Al-Khair, an organization which began building schools in Kachra Kundi more than a decade ago. Today it is a host to three campuses, including Al Khair Campus lll , for which Thaakat is the sole financial supporter. It is located in a remote area that previously had no access to an educational facility, and the school serves primary/elementary school children. Construction of Al -Khair Campus III began in January 2012 and completed six months later in June. The school officially opened to over 300 students in 2012 and excitement was widespread throughout the community. 2013 Developments at Dreams for Kachra Kundi: Attendance doubled to 440 students Transportation vehicle for teachers provided Achieved 40% enrollment rate of female students Healthcare provided Thaakat is still currently the sole financial supporter of this facility, thank you for making every day possible for us Earlier this year, we lost a dedicated teacher at our school in Kachra Kundi. Ms. Sannia Liaquat passed away from a health related issue. The teachers go through many struggles and dangerous and long journeys every day for the kids. Our school would not be able to run without them. We know without a doubt she must have been wonderful.

Tribute to a Hero

May she rest in peace.

26

The 16-classroom school is solely funded by Thaakat Foundation, and we hope to continue support by funding student meals, books, school supplies, staff salaries, and classroom expansion. There is a growing demand by hundreds more families in the area who wish to send their children to school as these kids dream of uplifting themselves out from the vicious cycle of poverty through education. Currently our school serves over 400 children (and their families) with healthcare and food along with supplies like notebooks, textbooks etc. We also provide transportation for our teachers to reach the school safely, avoiding the dangerous conditions they may face otherwise.

Water for Life

In the summer of 2012, Thaakat launched a campaign to build water wells in the poorest villages of Pakistan, giving hundreds of needy people access to fresh, clean drinking water.

What to Expect in 2014

Four concrete water wells were built in the poorest villages of the Cholistan desert, each serving nearly 500 people in its surrounding areas. The Cholistan desert sits on the eastern border of Pakistan, 20 miles outside of the city of Bahawalpur in the Punjab province.

ct Re-Born Africa

Underground piping brings fresh, clean groundwater up to the well for residents to access at any time of the day. The wells are operated by electric generators, which the regions mayor volunteered to maintain and pay for. Its very delicious and very clean. We are so happy and thankful to have this here, one resident of Block 185 in the Cholistan desert described of the well built within walking distance to his home. The residents of the Cholistan desert previously had zero access to clean drinking water. A brown, dirty lake was the only place they could come to wash, drink, and clean. It was highly unsanitary and the summer months left everyone brutally parched and disease prone. Cholistans residents are now able to take one step forward in leading a healthier lifestyle with fresh, clean drinking water for life.

Righteous Cause
Location: Ghana, The Konadu Basic School Goal: Education, Environmental Sustainability
Thaakat has adopted the small community of Tanobaose in South Western Ghana to help provide education to children in need. We have partnered with Clement Righteous Boamah, founder of the Konadu Basic School, a free primary school in this village, and will help expand the number of classrooms so more students can attend, while helping Clement provide a safe learning environment and sustained education for these children beyond primary school. Righteous began his school with just two kids and now has over 50. He offers the students rides to the school every morning in time for class to begin at 7:00 a.m. with breakfast and a morning prayer. The technique being used for the construction is unorthodox and underutilized; its durability, safety, and remarkable cost advantages are widely supported. This method employs discarded tires filled with compacted earth with cement used as mortar to secure the tire bricks into place. Using this technique, Righteous' will be constructing three conjoined 10 x 10 meter classrooms.

2014

Project Re-Born: After successfully registering Thaakat Foundation as a nonprofit agency in Blama Perri, Sierra Leone- it has opened up partnerships with the district health officer. He has promised an exciting opening of the center in 2014 once we are able to install solar electricity to light up the center!

Konadu Basic School: Our teachers will be receiving a monthly salary this year and we hope that our efforts in drilling will reveal a fresh water source for the children. The final touches on construction will also reveal a fantastic facility in Ghana for over 75 children.

Dreams for Kachra Kundi : Project Re-Born isnt the only one seeking some sunshine. Our principal has revealed pictures of children trying to read in the dark. We hope that we will be able to add several new classrooms to the school and also electricity to encourage learning in rain or shine. We will also be increasing teacher salary by 20% this year.
