b. Summary of Enemy Operations and Lo.sesl
,fhlle atMerzig, Germany, enemy restricted to active patrolling
inside our lines because of his heving to hold a defensive on the
east bank of the Saer River. Enemy losse. for the period cannot be
accurately determined. Positive contact was never obtained and
our operations were restricted to artillery.
Bastogne, Belgium. When this Battalion committed the 3ermanl
winter CO'lmter offenaive was at itl peak. Hi., aggreuive high
morale, wga evident on all sides. Employing tanks and infantry
with occasional air support, he wu able to pueh forward alm:..t
at will. His reckleaness accounted for his losing heavily
in armor snd infantry.
Enemy losses included twenty (20) Matk IV tanks, two (2)
self-propelled aSlault guns 75mm, five (5) personnel carriers,
two (2) Volkswagons, one (1) truck, and an undetermined
amount killed or wounded.

a. Ifa situation such as the one recently encountered in
Belgium should occur again, iti. highly recommended that rations,
gasoline, ammunition, etc., carried on Btrains, b, dumped
prior to 8ending the Btrains outside of the

a. The ratio of infantry to tank8 should never be lowered to such
an extent that there i8n't enough infantry to the
tanka available.
b. ThRt We leave our 57mm Anti-Tank guns behind, and let the
per80nnel of that platoon compri8e another rifle platoon.
c. That SCR ,00 be i8sued per company; two per Battalion
d. That more telephones be issued to Headquarters Company. Four
per aS8ault gun platoon, four per machine platoon.
e. That wire team8 of at least nine men be part,of our T/o.
f. When operation8 where kitchens cannot support, one cook be aSSigned
to each platoon.
g. That company and battalion maintenance within supporting distance.

by light artillery caused some delay and difficulty. the
Luftwatfe was active to a greater ey.tent than had been

and one truck captured or destxoyed.
11 - 14 April 1945
During this period, as terrain features greatly favored
the enemy, we met grf.!ater resistance. lighting in small
groups and ambushing whenever pOSSible, using arms
and automatic weat,ons they withdrew froDI one position to "
another somewhat hindering our progress. Civilians joined
soldiers in sniping activities. hridges were blown and
some artillery, anti-tank, and nebelwerff'r fire was sustained
by our column. Results of Cperutionsl 72 cartured,

teams, and one machine gun position knocked out.

fire was encountered. One town which we occupied was shelJed

material and a laree number of prisoners.
