.Section B (50 Marks)

Answeranyone Question only. The 9yestioncarries50 marks

Question 1: A reinforced cement concrete building was proposed to be constructed on a marshy area. The site being inaccessible machineries cannot be deployed. The designer initially proposed to have isolated footings as the foundation assuming the soil bearing capacity of 150KN/m2, however on physical observation and test at the site, the soil bearing capacity was found to be much less than the assumedvalue. Therefore, the contractor proposed to relocate the building to a more stable place; however this proposal was turned down and the contractor was asked to make all the necessarychanges required and to construct the building on the proposed area only. a) You as the soil engineer, how you would carry out the investigation and recommend the remedial measures, describe briefly. (15 marks)

b) You as the designer, what changes would you make. Describe briefly and if necessary give some sketchesto substantiate your justifications. (15 marks)

c) You as the site engineer, how would you carry out the foundation excavation works in such harsh conditions, describe briefly. And also prepare the work plan upto the plinth level with the duration of 30 days. (20 marks)
