Title: Freedom Writers Diary # 100 Description (1-2 sentences): This lesson will include an anticipation guide for

students to complete partially before and also after the diary entry. Students will listen and engage with diary entry number 100. Students will view a short video clip about how homelessness is being addressed in Wisconsin. Subject: Study Skills Instruction time: 20 minutes Students level by grade: 9th Grade, Level 1 Special Education Standard(s) to be addressed: Understand the importance of becoming knowledgeable about public affairs. (IA Core 9-12 Civic Literacy).

Enduring Understandings/Essential Questions targeted in this lesson (for units created using the Understanding By Design framework only): What does it mean to be evicted? What does it mean to be homeless? What are the effects and results of being evicted/homeless?

Learning Objectives for this lesson (Written using verbs from Blooms Taxonomy): Students will be able to connect The Freedom Writers Diary with modern day applications. Students will be able to understand self-evaluate their own understanding of key terms (eviction, homelessness) and the application to their lives. Students will be able to define homelessness and give an example of it.

Identified student needs and plans for differentiation: Some students may need additional prompting to stay on task, and perhaps several different examples of how to complete the anticipation guide. A visual on the board will be provided regarding how to complete the guide. For 8th period, it may be necessary to do a whole-class read aloud of each question, not only to ensure that students better understand the question, but to also promote on-task behavior for the activity.
