Warmers Beginner Level Name of the game- 20 questions Material- none Prep - 1 minute Activity - 5-7 minutes The

teacher will think of a person, place, or thing (aka noun) and the students, as a group, must ask 20 yes/no questions. They will use basic question words, usually limited to Can it... or Does it...., which avoids complications with question words (Who, what, when, why, where). The teacher responds with yes/no until the students narrow the category down. Reviews the inversion for question words, practices basic syntax, encourages student speaking with a high STT to TTT.

Name of the game-Timeline Material- whiteboard Prep- 2 minutes Activity-5-10 minutes The teacher writes a timeline on the board with 4 different dates, including month and year. The students practice asking questions about what happened on these dates Were you born on..., Did you go to...., etc.. Events should be basic, including birth, beginning to work for certain English Teaching Companies, etc.. When the students guess correctly, the teacher answers Practices the construction of basic questions, has a variety of possible question words, Does it...Did you...Was it when... etc..

Name of the game- Hangman Material- A whiteboard and a marker Prep- 1 minutes Activity - 5-6 minutes The teacher writes the number of spaces a word they have in mind has. The students then begin to ask letters that the word may have. If a letter is correct, the teacher writes it on the board in one of the spaces. If it isn't, the teacher draws a different body part of the hanged

man (head, body, legs, arms, etc..). After a certain amount of incorrect guesses, the students are punished by seeing a hanged man on the board. SUGGESTION: Use the objective of the class as the word or phrase so you can introduce it! Practices the pronunciation of words, gets the students talking, asking questions, and is relaxed and practices and introduces new words.

Name of Game-Words out of words Materials: blank piece of paper Prep-0 Activity length: 15 minutes to 20 minutes Instructions: Write a word on the board that the students do not know (so as to introduce new vocabulary). Then give the students a set time to come up with 6 words out of the word on the board. At the end of the set time the students gain points for the amount of words they have made and gain points if they can define the word as well. The one with the most points at the end of the game wins. This is a great vocabulary booster game.

Name of Game-Everything but a- guessing game Materials: none Prep-0 Activity length:10-15 minutes Instructions: The game begins with the teacher. He/she says everything but a car and the students have to list all of the types they know. For example: T: Everything but nature S: Everything but a tree S2: Everything but a trunk S3: Everything but grass And it continues until someone cant think of an item you would find in nature.

This game is fun because it makes the students think on their feet as well as practice either basic vocabulary or review new vocabulary.

Name of Game-Chopped- taking a sentence and seeing how many versions you can create Materials: paper with 10 sentences Prep-10 minutes Activity length: 30 minutes to 40 minutes Instructions: The students must work to reconstruct the sentences into completely new sentences with different meanings. It is a race against the clock and one another. The first person to finish wins the game. This is a great game because it allows the students to work on sentence structure and be creative.

Name of Game- Tic Tac Toe Review Materials- Whiteboard Prep time- 5 minutes Activity time- 5 minutes Instructions Teacher writes grammar or vocabulary questions on the board and the student must answer them correctly in order to have a turn; student then asks teacher a question (for example about Spain) that the teacher must answer correctly in order to have a turn. Play until someone wins. The game is fun, students can review what they learned last class or review for an exam

Name of Game- Madlibs Materials- Madlibs exercise, google madlibs there are lots of websites; whiteboard Prep time- 5 minutes Activity time- 10 minutes

Instructions Teacher asks students for a part of speech that the madlibs requires (noun, adj, etc) and makes a list on the board. Then a student reads the story filling in the blanks with the corresponding words on the board. Fun and funny, helps learn creativity with new vocabulary

Name of game-Charades Materials- nothing Prep time- 0 Activity time- 5-10 minutes Instructions Student acts out a movie without speaking and the other students guess what it is. Teacher doesnt participate. Fun, gets the class laughing Name of Game-Vocabulary Bag Materials-Strips of paper with vocabulary words & plastic/paper bag Prep-5 minutes- type and cut out words & place in bag Activity-5-10minutes (depending on how many vocabulary words you want to review) Instructions Type up list of recent vocabulary words & cut into individual strips with one word on each strip. Place the strips in the bag and mix them around. In class, tell the students you will pass the bag around the room and each student must choose one strip of paper, which they cant show to anyone. They must come up with a way to describe the word, without actually saying the word and the other students have to try and guess what vocabulary word the student is describing. This is a fun way to review vocabulary and get students talking and thinking in English at the beginning of class. This has especially worked well to review vocabulary before an exam, that way the students have a general idea of what vocabulary words might appear on the exam. Name of Game- Preposition of Place Picture Material-A picture of a room and a list of sentences describing the room

Prep-5-10 minutes to draw/find the picture and write the description sentences Activity-5-8 minutes Instructions Tell the students to take out a blank sheet of paper. Tell them you are going to describe a room and they have to try to draw the room youre describing. Tell them to remember this is to review prepositions of place so they need to listen carefully to where everything is. Then read the sentences describing the room, at least twice. Then have the students compare their pictures and finally show them the original and see how well theirs compare. This is an excellent way to check the students understand of prepositions of place, which is a difficult area for lower level students. Its also entertaining for the students because they dont usually have to draw in English class and it can be amusing to see adults art skills. Name of Game- Alphabet Game Materials- paper and pens Prep- no prep time Activity- 5 minutes Instructions Give each student a piece of paper and tell everyone to write all the letters of the alphabet down the page. Now instruct them that on your count everyone will write one word for each letter. Give the students 3 or 4 minutes to go down the alphabet and write one word for each letter. After writing one they may move on and do the second word for each letter. The student with the most words after 3 or 4 minutes is the winner. STUDENT INSTRUCTIONS: Write the letters A-Z down the page with a few lines in between. When the teacher says begin you will have 3 minutes to write one word that begins with each letter of the alphabet. After you have written one for each letter you may go on to the second word for each letter. You must go in alphabetical order and not move on to the next letter until you have written a word for the letter youre on. The student with the most words at the end is the winner. This is a beneficial game at the beginner level because it gets the students thinking of English vocabulary. It forces them to rack their brain for words they know but dont come to mind easily because they need a word for different letters. Also it is fun because it is a competition!! Name of Game- Who Am I? Materials needed- Post-it notes Prep time- 5 minutes Activity - 5-10 minutes

Instructions- Prepare a post-it note for each person in your group. Write on it the name of a well-known or famous person. This can be a historical character or current sportsman, musician, TV personality, celebrity etc. Have a good mix of men and women. Keeping the names hidden, stick the post-it notes on the foreheads of everyone in the group. They must then ask questions of the others to find out their identity. Students are able to practice question forms and vocabulary. It is fun and keeps the whole class engaged, as all students have to identify their post-it.

Name of Game- Whats the Situation? Materials - None Prep time- None Activity -5 minutes Instructions- The teacher says a sentence that refers to a particular place, such as a bar, church, restaurant, etc. Students discuss where they might here this sentence. For example, One ticket for the 8 oclock show, please. The students need to say that they are at the cinema. At a lower level, students are building their vocabulary and this exercise allows them to practice vocabulary and learn new useful phrases.

Name of Game Writing to Music Materials - A song and a music player Prep time- 5 minutes (to find an instrumental song) Activity - 5 minutes Instructions- Tell your students that they are going to listen to music (choose an instrumental piece without any words) for 2 or 3 minutes and ask them to write anything they want during listening, such as how music makes them feel. Less advanced students may want to simply write some keywords, more advanced ones could write full sentences. Then tell them to stop and ask them to share their ideas. You may select music that resembles the sound of nature or even classical music. Students enjoy listening to music and helps practice vocabulary that expresses their feelings, emotions and ideas. Name of Game- Memory Materials- Cards (half with pictures, half with words; as many copies as necessary for your class)

Prep -Varies---it depends on how long it takes for you to create all of the cards, the size of your class, and the amount of time for you to determine a playing order Activity- Varies depending on the size of the class Instructions-Divide the class into pairs. Set all of the cards on the table face down. Each person flips over one card. Then another. If the cards match (the picture + the vocabulary word), take the cards out of the group and set them aside. If they dont, flip both cards back over. Keep doing this until one person has matched all of his cards. The winners of each round should play each other and then losers should play each other. This is a fun, competitive way to review vocabulary. It could feasibly take up an entire hour class if the teacher wants.

Name of Game-Whats that? Materials- Pens, paper Prep-0 Activity-15-20 min Instructions: Each student should draw simple scenes and then take turns describing their drawings to their partner who has to attempt to replicate the drawing based on their partners descriptions (e.g. Student should say, The bag is on the table). The teacher should control the vocabulary by telling them which words their pictures should include (i.e. tables, chairs, desks, etc.) This is another way to test vocabulary. It also gives speaking practice and tests prepositions.
