Moving beyond the words: How to Inspire Change for International Women's Day
Ca lga ry, AB Its a phrase thats thrown around a lot, these days: empowerment. And as the 103 rd International Womens Day approaches, its one were likely to be hearing a great deal more. But for mompreneur and author Tina OConnor, its important that we move b e yond the word s associated with bettering the lives of woman, and give the term me a ning through a ction. ction Its the principle that has guided her both as a mom, and in her current career as the head of Be That Books Publishing. This March 8 th, the theme for International Womens Day will be Inspiring Change. OConnor is hoping that people all over the world will take some time to reflect on how they can take that theme to heart. The mother of three girls, Tina has herself been particularly struck by the Because I am a Girl campaign, from Plan Canada, and hopes that others will consider supporting their work. It aims to assist girls in the developing world through education, scholarships, nutrition, and social supports. As a result, 10% of the proceeds from Be That Girl are donated to the Because I am a Girl charity, and each book published through her company has its own charity associated with it depending on who the author would like to donate to. This has been a cornerstone of Tina's entrepreneurial endeavours from the beginning. Im aware that Ive been very fortunate in my life to have the opportunities Ive had. And I know that not everyone has access to those opportunities, and its why I feel so strongly about the need to give back, and to inspire positive change amongst women at home and abroad. Says OConnor, We like to think that in 2014 the world has advanced enough to the point where gender equality isnt an issue anymore. But sadly, its just not true. Violence against women, pay inequitytheyre all major issues. And not just abroad, but at home as well.
