ruins of Tazumal and Resume . The first inhabitants were the Pocomames , Lenca , and Pipil , who settled in the central and western parts of the country in the mid- eleventh century . The Spanish Admiral Andrs Nio led an expedition to Central America and disembarked on Meanguera Island, located in the Gulf of Fonseca, on May 31, 1522 . This was the first Salvadoran territory visited by the Spaniards. In June 1524 Spanish Captain Pedro de Alvarado began a war of conquest against Cuzcatln ( land of precious things) that was populated by the native tribes of the country. After 17 days of bloody battles many natives and Spaniards died , including Atlacatl Indian chief . Pedro de Alvarado defeated and wounded in his left hip , abandoned the fight and retreated to Guatemala , commissioning his brother, Gonzalo de Alvarado, to continue the conquest of Cuzcatln . Later , his cousin Diego de Alvarado established the town of San Salvador in April 1525, at a place called La Bermuda , near the town of Suchitoto. In 1546 , Charles I of Spain granted San Salvador the title of city .

LA PUPUSA
the most notable dish of El Salvador is the pupusa, a thick handmade flour or rice flour corn tortilla stuffed with cheese, pork (cooked pork meat ground to a consistency of pasta), refried beans, or Loroco (one flower bud vine native El Salvador). There are also vegetarian options, often with pumpkin (a type of squash) or garlic. Some adventurous restaurants even offer pupusas stuffed with shrimp or spinach.
THE ENCHILADAS The Enchiladas, these thin corn tortillas and chips are made, the ingredients are ground corn, achiote, touch of salt, bicarbonate touch to crisp.
