Answer all questions
Write your answer in the spaces provided on the question paper
1. A
beaker can hold 250cm3 of liquid. When it is filled with paraffin (density
0.80g/cm3), the total weight is 2.6N. Assume g= 10N/kg.
(b) Calculate the mass of paraffin in the beaker. State clearly the formula
used.
(b) Radiography

3. A motorcycle and a rider have a combined mass of 350 kg. During a trial
run on a racetrack, the motorcycle accelerates uniformly from rest at a
constant rate of 8.0m/s2 until the speed is 60 m/s. The motorcycle then
travels at a constant speed until it has gone a further 600 m. It then comes
to rest with a constant deceleration in a further 8.0 s.
(a) On the grid provided below, plot a speed-time graph to show the
motion of the motorcycle
[4]
(b) Calculate the kinetic energy of the motorcycle and rider when they are
travelling at constant speed.
(c) Calculate the braking force on the motorcycle during the final 8.0s of
the journey.

(b) The figure below shows two forces of magnitudes 6N and 8N acting on
an object P. The forces are at right angles to each other. The diagram
is not to scale.

On the space below, draw a vector diagram to determine the resultant
force on object P. State the magnitude of the resultant force and show
its direction on your vector diagram.

(b) In the calculation in (a), the weight of the tool is ignored. Assuming
the tool is made of the same material throughout, mark out the
likely position of the center of gravity and label it cg. State and
explain what impact, if any, will it have on the force required to
open ring-pull cans.

containers. In your answer you should include how the motion and
separation of the molecules differs between the 2 states

formed in a plane mirror, M.
On the figure, draw two rays which leave O and reach the eye, E, after
reflection at the mirror. [4]

10. A horizontal steel wire is fixed at one end and is kept under tension by
means of weight suspended over a pulley as shown in Fig A

Fig A
A 5 V d.c supply is connected to the wire between the fixed point and the
pulley such that a current flows between the fixed point and the pulley.
Magnets are placed near to the centre of the horizontal section of the wire
in order to produce a magnetic field at right angles to the wire.

through the circuit.
Fig. (b)
(a) Describe how the circuit breaker opens the circuit when the current
becomes too large. [3]
(b) Explain why the circuit breaker should be connected to the live wire in
a household circuit. [2]

bounce up and down by a rotating motor. For each rotation of the motor
one new wavefront is sent out.
light source
(a) A series of alternate bright and dark lines can be seen on the screen
below the tank. Suggest how this pattern is formed. [2]
(b) Explain how you would measure the wavelength of the waves. Your
explanation should include steps taken to ensure accuracy and
precision of the measurement. [5]
(c) Explain how you would use a ripple tank to demonstrate the refraction
of waves with a plane wavefront. Draw a diagram to help your
explanation. [3]
