foods are low in nutrition but also low in cost. In other words, they may not be good for you, but they are really cheap. Some experts call this is a toxic- food environment. Most of us do not recognize this unhealthy environment. Therefore, we believe if you are fat, its your responsibility. This is not completely true. We learn a lot about food from advertising. The most well-advertised foods are usually the least nutritious. Unfortunately, a great number of advertisements are made for children. In the United States, the average child watches 10,000 televisions advertisements each year. More than 90 percent of these advertise sugary cereals, candy, soda, and other junk foods. Today, many food corporations are focusing on developing countries. In 1998, one soft-drink company told its stockholders that Africa is a land of opportunity for us. The number of fast- food restaurants around the world is also growing rapidly. The largest American fast- food company opens five new restaurants every day. Four of them are located outside the United States. It is terrible to think that we may soon live in a world where everyone eats fast food and drinks soda. However, it is not unavoidable. Governments should educate their citizens about the danger of eating wrong food. This is particularly important for tomorrows adults. How much responsibility does each group have for the increase in obesity? None Individual adults Parents Children Government Doctors Schools Food manufacturers Advertisers Restaurants Very little Some A lot Almost all
What can each of the groups in the chart do to help people eat healthier food? Not everyone agrees that obesity is a social problem. Do you agree or disagree with the opinion below? Look out for the food police. They are attacking a traditional American meal - a cheeseburger, an order of French fries, and a large soda. A Yale University professor wants to have a special tax on high- calorie foods such as French fries. The Center for Science in the Public Interest wants to put warning labels on soft drinks. Such acts are taking away our freedom of choice.
