Next Saturday’s Event Invites Participants to Help Brew the EBC Stein, Sample Beer and Enjoy a Pig Roast
Every Fall, a handful of breweries around the world brew a German Stein beer with hot rocks. For over 10 years, the Allegany Alers and EBC have
worked in conjunction with EBC to brew a beer using only hot granite rocks to heat the Brew Kettle. This practice was used in the days before bronze
and copper and EBC is the only brewery in North America that continues this tradition on a regular basis. Next Saturday, Oct. 24, the Ellicottville
Brewing Company will produce their hellis style lager, which is a light amber to copper color, for the eleventh year in a row. To commemorate the
event, they will once again invite the customers to participate in the brewing of the beer. The Beer Garden will play host to the event from 11:30am-
6:30pm, and for $25 the participants will be able to sample beer and enjoy a Pig Roast.

drugs. Salamanca CARES took shape
about a year and half ago. One idea
is to showcase achievements of local
teens through an initiative called
“Cattaraugus County’s Got Talent.”

agencies, victim assistance

of events.” And yet by 8pm
on Sunday there was scarcely
a scrap of paper left. What
had been a busy and crowded
streetscape just a few hours
before was now an empty street,
save for a few brave souls still
out, undoubtedly celebrating the
end of a job well done.
And what a weekend it was
– the chilly weather did little to
dissuade locals and visitors alike
from their annual pilgrimage to
this little corner of the Southern
Tier. By the looks on their
collective faces, everyone was
having a great time. As it should
be … Kudos to all the merchants,
vendors and volunteers who

The New York State Police,
Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s
Office cooperated extensively
with officers from other
agencies as well as our own
in the policing of this event
to ensure a safe experience as
well as responding to calls for
assistance.

In January of this year, Kathleen
Hogan was diagnosed with
Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia
(ALL). This type of cancer
is normally found in young
children, so it was unusual that a
woman of 27 would be afflicted
by it. The treatment involves
multiple drugs given on a
precise schedule over a period
of two years. But rather than
get mad at the cancer, Kathleen
decided to get even and founded
the Gotta Kiss Cancer Goodbye
Foundation to raise awareness
of ALL and other cancers.
Proceeds from the Benebration
will be used by the foundation
towards improving the quality
of life for cancer patients and
their families.
Tickets are $20 pre-event and
$25 at the door and include
a chance to win a Nintendo
Wii or one of several valuable

Have you ever run into a
schoolyard bully ten or twenty
years after graduation? Bullies
usually morph, down the line,
into pitiful shadows of their
former selves. They’ve been
humbled by the passing of time
and their former deeds. Most
of the time I feel compelled to
slap them on their backs with
an “aw shucks, you weren’t
that bad” kind of apology. It
makes no sense but it’s human
nature to embrace former
adversaries after time has
revealed their humanity. So it
is with the Republican party.
All the henchmen are gone
and the bullies are left to fend
for themselves without any
real leaders. For some reason,
I feel compelled to help them.
I’m an idiot.
First off, to my Republican
friends, forget the past. It’s
over. Gone. History. Every
time I see some bitter, lost
conservative stand up at a rally
or meeting shouting about how
much they want their country
back, I feel like yelling at them
to take it back. Go ahead. Take
it back. It’ll be yours again
eventually. Find yourselves
a Gingrich-like leader and
galvanize behind him or her.

Some Friendly Advice
The fact that President Obama
has only been in office for nine
months actually works to your
advantage. You have three
whole years to find a leader
and a clear message. Take
your time and get it right.
Stop listening to the fringe
elements of your party. I’ve
said this a thousand times and
I’ll say it again. Americans
always drift towards the
middle. That’s why so many
red states have Democratic
Governors and so many
blue states have Republican
Governors. The GOP cannot
take control without help
from middle-of-the-road
Democrats. You like to call
them “Reagan Democrats.”
These are the people who
helped keep Ronnie in power
for eight years and the people
who came back to the party for
Clinton. With Limbaugh and
Beck effectively running the
GOP you will never be able
to turn that important corner.
Which brings us to number
three.
Shut up. When you stand
up and applaud the fact that
America is not getting the
Olympics in 2012, you look
like idiots. You’re basically
conceding the fact that you
expect Obama to still be in
office at the time and you
look unpatriotic. What if you
actually get your acts together
by then and pull off an upset in
the next election? You could
celebrate by waving your little
flags and celebrating the skills
of our country’s gifted, young
athletes. Do you really think a
Republican president wouldn’t
have tried to get them if he or
she had the chance? Cheering
for the Olympics is about
support and patriotism, not
about politics. So sit down
and wouldn’t need certain
approvals.
Next on the agenda was a

Candino. Candino is looking to
establish an accessory building
apartment. The Planning
Board expressed concern about
the parking on the property, but
the 9 Madison Street home has
plentiful parking as explained
by Candino. The Village
allows one apartment to go
with each property. The board
agreed to a public hearing
next month. It was explained
that there are no rentals in
the Village under thirty-days.
Candino expressed that he was
