SERVICES FOR THE MINING INDUSTRY

FROM EXPLORATION TO DECOMMISSION

We provide a multidisciplinary approach to all possible issues arising during the planning phase of a mine, e.g. baseline studies, permit- and exploitation concession applications, EIA/ESIA, land use planning, work plans for prospecting and geophysical logging of boreholes to assess ore reserves. Ramboll provides technical and juridical assistance during the mine establishment and operation e.g. logistics and noise studies, recipient, dust and vibration modelling, landscape analysies and modeling and water quality control as part of the monitoring of the environmental impact of a mine. Ramboll also provides services for the construction of the mine infrastructure, like earth works, buildings, roads, dams, water management systems, etc. Ramboll assists mining companies in planning the decommissioning of the site in a safe way for society and environment. For example preparing remediation plans, waste characterisation and treatment, dam control and safety assessments and environmental monitoring.

MAIN AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Ramboll possesses broad experience and extensive know-how within all environmental and technical aspects of the mine life cycle, from initial investigations to closure.

EXPLORATION AND ESTABLISHMENT Geophysical investigations: Seismic, borehole logging, electric and electromagnetic investigations, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and geodesy. Work plan: Ramboll establishes the work plans necessary before drilling operations can start and ensures their distribution to the land owners. Permit and Concessions: Ramboll prepares permit applications, environmental permit applications and documents to obtain exploitation concessions and land use planning. Hydrology and hydrogeology: Hydrogeological investigations to identify aquifers, characterise leachate plumes and assess the consequences of groundwater sinking. Geology: Geological assessment of bed rock properties, geological modelling. Project management: Ramboll consultants may provide assistance in the management of technical and environmental construction projects.

STRATEGIC STUDIES Base line studies: Ramboll performs different types of technical and socioeconomic baseline studies, which are a prerequisite to the license process before the establishment of industrial facilities and mines. Master plan: Ramboll prepares master plans addressing e.g. the need to manage the adverse environmental and socioeconomic effects caused by the abandoning of mines. EIA/ESIA: Environmental impact assessment prior to the establishment or expansion of mines i.e. to identify and assess environmental and social effects, compare alternatives and design mitigation measures and environmental plans. Ramboll conducts noise studies, dust and vibration modelling as part of the environmental assessment of mines. Logistic studies: Optimisation of transport inside and outside of the mining area to reduce transports.

CIVIL ENGINEERING Rock mechanics: Ramboll has broad experience designing underground facilities as well as the prevention of uid ow around them. This experience is useful when it comes to limitation of e.g. contaminant dissipation around underground storages of mining or processing waste. Geotechnical investigation: Ramboll performs all aspects of geotechnical studies including slope stability, soil mechanics and soil testing using our drilling rigs. Dam construction: Ramboll works with tailings dams as well as hydroelectric earth dams, providing services as engineering, project management for dam elevation and dam design. Dam safety: Ramboll conducts instrumentation and monitoring of earth dams and design of reinforced foundations. Ramboll also performs dam safety inspections. Water management: Ramboll designs water supply, wastewater and drainage systems including treatment of process wastewater and mine drainage.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES Recipient control: Education, planning and evaluation of recipient control program, including statistical and geochemical modelling of the results. Ramboll also performs biota sampling of e.g. lichen, seaweed and mussels. Site investigation: Ramboll plans and executes soil and groundwater sampling at polluted industrial sites. The outcome of investigations is used in risk assessment of the sites and to propose remediation measures. Remediation plan: Ramboll prepares remediation plans and other environmental studies in connection to mine closure. Mining waste management: Ramboll assesses solutions for temporary and nal management of waste rock and tailings. Mining waste treatment: Ramboll works actively to promote the use of alternative materials in the treatment of mining waste deposits and for the mitigation of ARD.

SOCIAL LICENSE TO OPERATE Social Impact Assesment: Ramboll has a solid social impact assessment experience from different elds of action both on national and international level. Variety of expertise and methods are used to create the best possible combination for every client and project. Ramboll has ongoing research on life cycle assessment of social impacts and cumulative social impacts. Social Responsibility, Social Auditing: Ramboll helps in producing all the needed documents to investors. Community Engagement: Ramboll is a strong actor and developer in involving communities. An active, well-timed and open approach to involvement of citizens and communities helps to anticipate and mediate possible problems and helps to create mutual trust and therefore a smoothly proceeding process.
