Newtons Laws Newtons 1st Law An object at rest remains at arrest and an object in motion will continue moving

at a constant velocity unless acted on by unbalanced force. (Inertia) Inertia Tendency of an object to resist any change in its motion. It increases as mass increases Newtons 2nd Law The acceleration (a) of a body is parallel and directly proportional to the net force (F) acting on the body and is inversely proportional to the mass (m) of the body. For simplicity, the law is written as F = ma Note: The unit of Force (F) is Newton (N) More force means more acceleration More mass means less acceleration Force = mass x acceleration (F = ma) Misconception F =ma is not correct. the law states that the sum of all forces acting on a body equals to its mass times acceleration I.e. F = ma Sample Problem I A troll and a goblin are fighting with a big, mean ogre over a treasure chest, initially at rest. Find: 1. 2. 3. 4. Fnet = 850 + 400 1200 = 50N a = 1/6m per seconds V after 5s = 5/6 m per seconds x after 5s = 25/6 m

Newtons 3rd Law For every action, there is a reaction thats equal in magnitude and opposite in direction.
