Adhesion Loss, Clearcoat

Description Loss of adhesion of the clearcoat from the basecoat.

Origin and Potential Causes: Excessive film thickness of basecoat. Intermediate and final flash-off times of the basecoat too short. Wrong mixing ratio for clearcoat and activator. Prevention Techniques: Allow proper flash off time of coats of basecoat and before applying clearcoat. Apply proper film thicknesses of all layers. Mix clearcoat correctly. ollow system recommendations per !echnical "ata #heet$s%. Remedy #and& isolate if necessary& and refinish.

Bleeding

Also no!n as: bleed thro'gh& staining& stains Description (riginal finish color or peroxide hardener from polyester body filler seeping thro'gh the topcoat& ca'sing a discoloration of the new finish.

Origin and Potential Causes:


)eaction of pigments from the original finish with solvents of the coat which has been applied on top of it. *ontamination - 's'ally in the form of sol'ble dyes or pigments on the older finish before it was repainted. $!his is especially tr'e with older shades of red.% (ld finish not well sealed. +se of too m'ch hardener in the polyester p'tty or filler. Ins'fficient mixing of the polyester p'tty or filler.

Prevention Techniques: !est old finish applying a coat of the color on a small area if bleeding is likely to occ'r& if so apply sealer. +se only the recommended ,'antity of hardener when mixing the polyester p'tty or filler. *heck ,'antity of hardener& mix by weight or 'se a dispensing machine. Mix all p'tties or fillers thoro'ghly. Remedy )emove polyester and re-do repair. #and& isolate the original finish with sealer and reapply the topcoat.

Blistering

Description -'bbles or pimples appearing in the topcoat film& application.

Origin and Potential Causes: )esid'e of sanding water in corners& edges& crevices& or below decorative strips. Ambient h'midity too high. Improper s'rface cleaning or preparation. !iny specs of dirt left on the s'rface can act as a sponge and hold most're. When the finish is exposed to the s'n $or abr'pt changes in atmospheric press're%& moist're expands and press're b'ilds 'p. If the press're is great eno'gh& blisters form. Wrong thinner or red'cer. +se of a fast-dry thinner or red'cer& especially when the material is sprayed too dry or at an excessive press're. Air or moist're can be trapped in the film. Excessive film thickness. Ins'fficient drying time between coats or too heavy application of the 'ndercoats may trap solvents which escape later and blister the color coat.

Prevention Techniques: Always remove exterior trim. -low and dry caref'lly. !horo'ghly clean areas to be painted before sanding. -e s're s'rface is completely dry before applying either 'ndercoats or topcoats. "on2t to'ch a cleaned area as the oils in yo'r hands will contaminate the s'rface. #elect the thinner or red'cer most s'itable for existing shop conditions. Allow proper drying time for 'ndercoats and topcoats. -e s're to let each coat flash before applying the next. "rain and clean air press're reg'lator daily to remove trapped moist're and dirt. Air compressor tank sho'ld also be drained daily. *lean s'bstrate caref'lly. Remedy If damage is extensive and severe& paint m'st be removed down to 'ndercoat or metal& depending on depth of blisters3 then refinish.
