What do you do for EANGUT?

by CSM (RET) Raelynn Oman, Legislative chair EANGUS Utah

FRONT PAGE PHOTO: Four members of EANGUT attended the Legislative workshop this year to address issues that affect our servicemembers. Three members were photographed between meetings on Capitol Hill.

It is amazing that after all these years and all of EANGUTs achievements, folks still ask why they should join this professional organization and what it does for them. The short answer is that, like any professional association, it is the members who decide the priorities, goals and scope of the organization. So, as a member, it is for you to decide what you want EANGUT to do for you. Some professionals are members of more than one professional organization and the basis for their involvement in each of them is the same; they care about the profession, the people in the profession and want to support and do right by those people anyway that they can. Most service members love the military and members of the military. To be more specific, enlisted Soldiers love enlisted members of the military. We relate to, and respect the unique perspective and responsibility that we have as enlisted men and women. Because we are enlisted, it can seem futile to rally as a group in order to achieve necessary change. We are, after all, at the bottom of the food chain. Our perspective is sometimes very different from the Officer Corp; due to how we see military issues from a very different perspective than they do. Some of our issues conflict with theirs and

because of rank structure we find ourselves between a rock and a hard place trying to better our conditions without shooting ourselves in the foot. Conversely, many of our most recent accomplishments benefit all members of our force, officer and enlisted. Last year EANGUT worked with local elected representatives to encourage legislators to vote for a property tax break for deployed service members. We were given that tax break by a popular vote from citizens. This year one of the things that we are working with our local representatives for is funding from the state to fill the gap in education that occurs when GI Bill funding falls short of supporting service members in obtaining a degree. EANGUT is the only state professional organization that is working for that benefit. National enlisted associations have

fought against any attempts to cut drill pay and lower federal benefits. The work of the organization benefits all of us in uniform, enlisted and officer alike. Professional organizations are not unions. I have served as a Union President and I know that unions are necessary and powerful to some professions. But, in our field unions cannot exist. We are Warriors, we took an oath, and ultimately we work for the citizens of our state and our country. So, we really dont have the same type of leverage that a union has. We do not strike or not show up for work because we are unhappy with a condition of our job. That goes against what we swore to do as military members. We do not represent the individual person who is accused of doing something wrong. Professional organizations represent the whole and bettering the conditions of the entire profession. However, we can stand up for ourselves and our fellow Warriors. We can work to improve the conditions we work in, the benefits we receive and the laws that support and defend us. Leaders do things like that and leadership is ultimately the foundation of our profession. Leaders are also members of, and leaders in professional organizations. All of you have leadership ability or you wouldnt last a minute in this field. Membership in a professional organization provides one more avenue to raise your game as a leader to handle mission and men. Be the leader that participates in a professional organization to provide for yourselves and your troops. Be a leader and be a member. If you see an issue that needs attention, work at whatever angle you have too to fix it. Work on it as a member of your professional organization the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of Utah.

Employment for Veterans

by Staff Sgt Scott Wolfe, UTARNG, 128th MPAD

Those of us serving, or who have served, in the Armed Forces have learned a very valuable set of skills: useful skills with practical experience behind the knowledge. With todays economy being what it is, many Servicemembers are trying to use these skills to better take care of their families by getting new jobs or, if they are new to the civilian side of the street, getting a job. Hero2Hired is a great place to figure out how to do this. Its not just a job search engine for people in or just getting out of the uniform. Rather, it is a comprehensive service for Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen that will translate the jobs skills you do have, find jobs in career fields you are interested in and put you in touch with employers and the people in those career fields to put you in a better position to get that job. Yes, it is a search engine, but it really does a number of things while doing that. It takes your Military Occupation and your location preference and then translates the different skills sets of that specialty into types of jobs you should have some aptitude for in the regions you would care to work. Under any particular job, it notes the career field that that specific civilian occupation falls under. You can click on that link to find similar jobs you are interested in by the career field instead of going back to the search engine that translates your military occupation.

In building your H2H profile, the site will walk you through building a resume. It asks for the important data concerning yourself, your occupational specialty and your skills. This also allows you to add in descriptions of what you did while in the military. For example, rather than only mentioning you were a Cavalry Scout, you can add that you were tapped to be the unit armorer for 13 months and were in charge of maintenance and inventory of 3.2 million dollars worth of equipment. To be honest, some parts of your military occupation you might not have used very much. A Cavalry Scout (19D MOS) has heavy equipment operator as a related civilian occupation, but if you were in a light infantry unit you might not have seen much heavy equipment. However, if you drove a Bradley Fighting Vehicle, this would fit you fairly well. They also have a Transition Support Contact or Case Manager. This is someone you can go to and have them look over your resume to point out flaws that companies look for, or to help you fine tune your resume towards a particular job. Your Case Manager will point you in the direction of workshops to help you practice for interviews and job fairs to put you out there for companies to see. If your resume hasnt been getting any hits or getting hits from the wrong type of jobs, ask them to look it over. Your Case Manager is as much a resource of Hero2Hired as the resume builder. The current job market has many uncertainties for employers and job seekers both. Hero2Hired can translate your military experience, training and professionalism into something prospective employers are able to quantify and understand. This puts you in contact with people and companies that value the qualities you can bring to the table.

Just wanted to take this opportunity to thank those states that participated this year in the 2014 Minuteman Recruiting Competition; you can tell that those who did saw some positive results. The prize for the winner is to have their trip to the Mid-Winter conference paid for, to include: airfare, lodging and the registration fee. Should the winner not be available or choose not to attend, there is a cash prize of $500. The winner is: SMSGT Shawn Marston, 152nd AW, Nevada. He brought in 135 members during the competition period. The 2nd runnerup: SMSgt Bobby Born, Retiree, Wyoming. He brought in 121 members during the competition period. Great job to both of them! Congratulations! The winners will be officially recognized during the Mid-Winter conference. Karen M. Craig, CSM-Ret Area VI Chair

Legislative Workshop

by Michelle McEntire

This year I had the opportunity to attend EANGUSs Legislative Workshop held in Washington, D.C., Feb. 1-4, a few short blocks away from Capitol Hill. We were a group of four EANGUT members: two Army and two Air. The workshop taught us how to gain the support of our senators and congressional representatives regarding issues affecting the National Guard. We attended the legislative workshop each morning, then visited our elected officials in the afternoon. Its always great to interface with the other state Enlisted Associations. I always learn something new while training with them! We arrived in Washington with a specific list of items to talk aboutthe most pressing being, the possible loss of all of Utahs AH-64 Apache helicopters to the active duty component of the Army. It was important to speak to how the loss would impact Utahns and the readiness of our Armed Forces. If reserve forces are not flying and supporting the same equipment that active duty folks do, active duty forces dont really have a reserve force to pull from when needed. The next item we spoke about was the Utah Air National Guards possible future move to Hill AFB. This was of special interest to Congressman Stewart, as he flew rescue helicopters and the B-1B bomber in the Air Force years ago. The KC-135 is nearing the end of its life, the 151st ARW needs to move to a new platform. The new KC-46 Pegasus tanker is a prime candidate but, the Utah Air National Guard doesnt have the space to support it at their current location. Hill AFB has the space and empty buildings that the Air Guard could utilize. This move is a big deal, so we need as much power in our corner as possible. It was interesting to see the amount of full-time staff each of our senators and congressmen have working in their Washington offices. They all had legislative assistants and interns (the interns were all college students from Utah!). In fact, Senator Hatch and Congressman Chaffetz were unable to meet with us. Instead we visited with their legislative assistants; Sen. Hatch has two military legislative assistants. (Hes one busy person, apparently) Id never given much thought to the fact that our elected officials travel between D.C. and Utah so often, that they need to have assistants keep their offices going in their absence. They do this, as well as keeping their eyes and ears open regarding legislation that affects Utah. I urge all of you to contact our senators or representatives whenever there is a need. Remember: they work for YOU! Each of them have several contact methods, Facebook and digital newletters are some examples. Sign up and stay in the know! When its a critical, pressing issue a face-to-face visit is always best. It allows you to make eye contact and infuse passion into your speech. Any questions can be asked and answered immediately. Dont forget to call ahead for an appointment!

Presidents Corner
Welcome back from hopefully what turned out to be a quality holiday vacation. This quarter will present some tremendous work by EANGUT. First, we just returned from the Mid-Winter Conference for AREA VI in Vancouver, WA. During this conference we discussed potential resolutions we may want to present for 2015 during the national conference. This is our opportunity to recommend changes to current legislation in order for it to be worked on next year. We were selected to host the 2015 Mid-Winter conference for both Area VI and VII. If you or someone you know is interested in supporting this event please get with MSG Jennifer Butler. We will be attending the Legislative Workshop to speak with our national legislators in Washington, D.C. on 1-4 February 2014. They will be working towards EANGUS top 3 priorities of legislation. During this workshop EANGUS takes it turn on Capitol Hill to conduct grass roots campaigning on behalf of guardsmen in each state. The State Conference will be kicking off on the 28th of March 2014 with an evening social at the Officers club at Camp Williams, UT. The conference itself will be held on the 29th of March in the UTNG Headquarters Auditorium, in Draper, UT. I would like to encourage the enlisted folks out there to come and participate, as it will help you gain an understanding of how we, as well as, NGAUT operate, and work towards the betterment of the enlisted men and women. The key note speaker is Al Garver, EANGUS own Executive Director. Be prepared to pose questions to him related to national legislation and our national office operations. He is a very dynamic speaker and we are grateful to be able to have him speak directly to you, the members. Our membership committee integrated a membership drive on behalf of Burt Brothers Tire and Service. They decided to utilize this opportunity to increase our membership and have done so above any historical level I am aware of. With increased members, we have the ability to ensure higher delegate representation of the members at the National Conference. This provides us with significant voting power to ensure our agendas are pushed. With the end of the year upon us we are turning our focus to Corporate Sponsors. If you know of any businesses that are looking to support our organization, please submit their information to Bonnie Young, our Executive Director. She will be focusing her efforts on these businesses. Last but not least, I want to express an extreme appreciation for what we have been able to accomplish over the last couple of years. I have been blessed with an exceptional executive council and professional committee chairs. I want to thank each of them for their dedication to the Enlisted Association. I could have never accomplished any of this without your help. For those of you that dont know, I am passing the gavel this year to a new President that you will elect at the State Conference. I would encourage anyone out there to take the opportunity to be actively involved in the association. You have the opportunity to refocus, reinforce, or recreate the Enlisted Association by the President you choose. It shouldnt be a popularity contest, nor a rite of passage, it should be the person you as members elect to carry the association forward. Please take careful consideration in nominating and selecting your new presidency: President, Vice-President Army, and Vice-President Air. These folks will spearhead your association to new heights and are extremely critical to the manner in which we conduct business. Please ensure your attendance to make your selections. Thank you to everyone out there who has supported me through this opportunity to serve as your President. Respectfully, Wyatt D. Davis EANGUT President
