I don't understand the connection of the verse to the question about the available books. Could you clarify? However, I would imagine that the Torah plus the book of Joshua would be available, as well as a historical record of the period of Judges (whether or not the actual book in its final form was available) and possibly Job. But I ain't no scholar.

I would say the Pentateuch and Joshua were written by the time Jonathan roles on the scene. It easy to figure out when the Pentateuch was written because they are authored by Moses before Jonathan was born. Regarding the book of Joshua, the Talmud says Joshua wrote it. Ruth had to have been written after David was born because of the last chapter of Ruth give the genealogy of David. I am not sure when Judges was written. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that the people of Israel had an oral tradition. Jonathan probably had access to many of the events that led to his day, including the events of Genesis to Ruth. I found study bible and commentary introductions to be helpful as I considered this question.

Jon Dulin OPC Virginia The real question is not, as often pretended, between the Word of God and the creed of men, but between the tried and proved faith of the collective body of God's people, and the private judgement and the unassisted wisdom of the repudiator of creeds. A.A. Hodge
