Suggestions for Success

Periodically look through your childs notebook and graded assignments. Check grades in each class on SIS grading system. Talk to your child daily to see whats being done in class and how things are going. Frequently check with teachers (by phone or email)dont wait to be contacted. Encourage your child to be proactive in classstudy class notes every night, even if no formal homework is assigned. Encourage your child to stay organized, maintain regular attendance, make up work immediately after an absence, and focus on long-range assignments and due datesdont wait until the last minute. Periodically (once a semester) check with your childs Guidance Counselor to ensure that all is in place for graduation in June of 2013! You dont want any last minute, irreparable surprises!

Class Syllabus & Quiz Coupons


Each quarter a class syllabus is issued that outlines the units/areas to be studied, upcoming projects, and grading components (subject to change each quarter). Additionally, four colorcoordinated 10-point bonus quiz coupons are issued to match that quarters syllabus.

Independent (Outside) Reading


Students will read one novel outside of class EACH quarter and complete a report on each in the format designated and by the due date assigned. *Teacher approval is MANDATORY for ALL novel selections. *Teacher reserves the right to give a zero (0) or significantly reduced score if approval is not obtained!

1st Quarter Grading Evaluation


This quarter, the grading is as follows:

Additional Info: Submitted work should include the proper four (4) part MLA heading written in dark blue/black ink, on loose-leaf paper on the front side only with no writing in the margin

Late Work
Sufficient time is allocated for all assignments. The expectation is that ALL assignments will be submitted on or before the designated due date! With this in mind late class and homework will not be accepted; however, MAJOR (book reports, essays, and projects) assignments are accepted (up to THREE [3] calendar days) past the due date. One day (24 hrs) late -10 pts off Two days (48 hrs) late -20 pts off Three days (72 hrs) late -30 pts off ASSESSMENT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE THIRD DAY!!! *Specific exceptions/considerations given for extenuating circumstances.

Eleventh Grade SOL Tests


Eleventh grade students must pass THREE (3) SOL tests: Reading and Writing (two tests-a direct writing prompt and a multiple choice test). Units and activities have been designed to cover the 11th grade SOLs. To further prepare our students for success, many quizzes and tests are patterned after the actual test format containing multiplechoice questions that must be bubbled on a scantron sheet. Students will additionally complete writing assignments, grammar activities, and vocabulary lessons as reinforcement for SOL testing.

Organization: English Notebook


A 3-ring binder solely for English is required. Notebook dividers are also needed to maintain organization. The dividers should be labeled as: 1. Agenda 2. Class Notes 3. Bell Work 4. Vocabulary and Grammar 5. Graded Work Notebook tests are giventhe more organized, the better your child will fare.
