Kings College
Kings College in the English city of Guildford is one of the worlds top schools in the use of
computers. Students at Kings College not only study Computer Science, but also use PCs for the
study of all other subjects (except Physical Education!). Everybody here knows how to use a
computer, thirteen year-old Claire explains. The desks in my classroom all have computers, so
when our teachers explain something, they show us images on our screens (our PCs are all
connected to the teachers). We also take our notes on our computers, so we have to know how to
type on a keyboard and how to open and save documents.
Students at Kings College use computers for around one quarter of all their lessons. For example,
when they want to analyse mathematical data, they input it into a computer; and when they are
learning languages, they surf the Internet and read real French websites. It is very useful, one of
the teachers of the school explains. Of course, the students must take the use of computers
seriously. In class they cannot play any videogames, listen to music or chat with their friends. And
only the teacher can decide what websites to visit.
Students with computers at home also have the possibility of downloading notes or homework
from the schools website. For those without a PC, the computer laboratory is open in the evening.
