Sir, EFFECTS OF CELL PHONE USE ON THE JOB These facts and figures tell business owners and managers several important things. Americans are using their cell phones constantly. Not only are they talking, they are also texting and using social networking apps. This means if your employees are normal, average Americans, they are probably using their phones during the time you are paying them to work. This cuts into productivity which cuts into your bottom line. Employees are not permitted to use a land line to chat with friends and family, or cruise Facebook on their computer. Using their mobile device is the equivalent. Not only is cell phone usage a misappropriation of company time, it also reflects poorly on the business to see employees using their cell phones. The best way to put a stop to employees abusing their phones in the workplace is to spell out your policy in the employee handbook.

When evaluating a companys cellphone policy, several factors should be taken into consideration. The first is, when and where can cell phones to be used? Some employers may decide that none may used on company premises or company time. For example, when it is a

safety issue or when they can effect sensitive equipment, like a driver or hospital employee. Others may decide that cell phones are only appropriate when staff are on a break in designated staff only areas. This is the most common approach. The third option is cell phones are allowed only when all other work is done. For example, a restaurant on a slow night or a parking lot attendant. Once parameters have been established, the next step is to decide on consequences if an employee is not following the rules. The best option is an established system of documented verbal and written warnings, with termination being the end result. It is very important to go over the rules you choose to implement with your staff. Also, make an addendum to the employee handbook that every person signs. If employees complain, a simple explanation that time is money should suffice. The more productive employees are, the more income is generated, and the better that is for everyone. Dont allow your employees to waste valuable time and money on their cell phones. If the issue is not addressed, it is easy for them to claim ignorance if it does become a problem. Explaining the companys position on cell phones in the workplace before it becomes a personnel issue is good business sense and can save time and energy that is better used elsewhere. How could they effect the company? Mobile phones can be an extremely disruptive presence in everyday life of the modern world. They have the power to pull irritated theatre actors out of character, keep aeroplanes grounded and to drive train passengers to despair. They can sometimes pose a serious safety risk such as by interfering with vital electrical equipment in hospitals and aircraft, or in potentially explosive environments, such as fuelling stations or blasting sites. These modern devices can also cause jeopardy in your workplace. Excluding the possible health and safety concerns mobile phones can cause, it can also affect many aspects that contribute to a good working environment. The distraction caused by these devises can lead to a reduction in concentration, loss of productivity, extension of working hours also frustration amongst fellow workers.

Maintaining a harmonious and productive workplace can be difficult at the best of times, without adding the pressure caused by excessive and inappropriate mobile phone use. These issues could be avoided with the implementation of rules and regulations regarding the use of mobile phones in the workplace.

1) Adults who use cell phones for 10 years and longer have about a doubling of risk (200% risk) for malignant brain tumors. Every international study published that looks at 10 year and longer latency shows increased risk for glioma, Risks are higher with ipsilateral use (same side of head). Studies reporting no risk are looking at very short latencies, where you would not expect yet to see anything. 2) Risks emerge with only 460 hours cumulative lifetime hours (French Interphone Study), but you are clearly in the high risk category with 2000 or more lifetime hours (Hardell et al, multiple studies 2004-2009). How many hours have YOU? 3) Average life span for glioma victims is 403 days following diagnosis (think Ted Kennedy). Hardell reports they die so fast he cant interview them all, and that also dilutes these risk numbers. 4) For acoustic neuromas, there is a 30% increased risk with cell phone use at ten years and longer; and a 240% increased risk of acoustic neuroma when the cell phone is used mainly on one side of the head. 5) All recent meta-analyses of brain tumor/cell phone studies all show increased risk. This is true even where some studies have short latencies, exclude the heaviest user categories, and where users are defined as one hour or more per week of cell phone use. We consider those unexposed and they dilute risk findings, but even with them included in meta-analyses, risks still stand up. 6) Children who use cell phones have more than a five-fold (500%) increased risk of malignant brain tumor by the time they reach the 20-29 age group.

7) Maternal use of cell phones during pregnancy is reported to be associated with altered fetal brain development, which is expressed in serious behavioral difficulties in children by the time they reach school age (Divan et al, 2008). 8) This could have serious implications to adult health and functioning in society if years of exposure of the young (in utero and otherwise) to both ELF and RF result in diminished capacity for thinking, judgment, memory, learning, and control over behavior 9) Both cell phones and cordless phones increase the risk of brain tumors and acoustic neuroma. Most cordless phones today approach the power output of cell phones. 10) Glioma from cordless phones is 220% higher (phone used both sides of the head). The risk from use of a cordless phone is 470% higher when used mostly on only one side of the head (ipsilateral). 11) Acoustic neuroma is three-fold higher (310%) when cordless phone is mainly used on one side of the head. Effect of the surgery = loss of hearing, facial paralysis and/or permanent vertigo and loss of balance. What You Can Do Ask your office manager or owner of your business to write down and distribute an office policy on cell phone/PDA use and wireless in the workplace. It should include this advice: Use corded phones for regular use, longer calls and your first phone Make fewer and shorter calls on cell phones, cordless phones and PDAs Use speaker phone mode and text rather than talk. Use a wired earpiece for cell phones (hollow-tube earpieces are preferable) Adopt a corporate policy to issue only low SAR (low-emission) units. The lowest emission SAR still has to be used away from the head.

Do not wear cell phone/PDA next to your body when ON Cell phone in a car is dangerous advise no use, or limit it. Many states have laws against handheld phone use while driving. It is no safer. Ban texting while driving. Damaged cell phones and PDAs (dropped, banged around) often have much higher emissions. Make sure if one is issued to you, it is in good condition. Stay wired avoid wireless internet and WI-FI systems

Here are some rules you should follow if you have your cell phone at work. 1. Turn Your Cell Phone Ringer Off If you have your cell phone at work, it shouldn't ring. If you don't want to turn off your cell phone completely, at least set it to vibrate. The sounds of different ring tones going off all the time can be very annoying to others. In addition, you don't want your boss to know how often you get calls. 2. Use Your Cell Phone Only for Important Calls If you have your cell phone at work, you should only use it for important calls. What should you classify as an important call? The school nurse calling to say your child is ill, your child calling to say he's arrived home from school safely, and family emergencies that you must deal with immediately are important. Your friend calling to chat, your child calling to say the dog had an accident, or your mom calling to tell you your cousin Tilly is engaged should not be considered important.

3. Let Your Cell Phone Calls Go to Voice Mail While you are at work if you are in doubt about whether an incoming call is important, let voice mail pick it up. It will take much less time to check your messages than it will to answer the call and then tell the caller you can't talk. 4. Find a Private Place to Make Cell Phone Calls While it's okay to use your cell phone at work for private calls during breaks, don't stay at your desk. Find somewhere else to talk, where your conversation can't be overheard, even if what you're discussing isn't personal. You may be on a break but your co-workers have a job to do. 5. Don't Bring Your Cell Phone Into the Restroom ... Ever This rule should apply to using your cell phone at work or anywhere. Why? Well, if you must ask you never know who's in there; the person on the other end of the line will hear bathroom sounds, e.g., toilets flushing; it is an invasion of your co-workers' privacy. 6. Don't Bring Your Cell Phone to Meetings In this day and age cell phones have become an essential work tool and therefore this rule should read "Don't Bring Your Cell Phone to Meetings If You Are Going to Use It for Anything Not Related to the Meeting." It's likely you have your calendar on your phone and you probably use it to take notes. If you need to have it with you for those reasons, then you don't have much of a choice. Do not use it to text, read or post status updates, or play games. Don't bury your nose in your phone. Keep your eyes on whomever is speaking and stay engaged in the meeting. Doing anything else will be a clear signal to your boss that your mind isn't 100 percent on the business at hand.

CONCLUSION In the workplace, cell phone use can also come across as rude. There are many occurences when texting is inappropriate at the workplace. Taking calls distracts other workers and can make it appear that fellow workers arent working. This can cause unnecessary tension in the workplace. Depending on the type of workplace there may be different variations of cell phone policy, but despite the policy, there are always times when texting or calling can come off as rude.
