Lida Hatrick
Inspired by the Lammermuir Hills and the
River Merse in Tuscany, Lida Hatrick
works intuitively and energetically, aiming
to achieve a true, but not literal
representation of the landscape. For her
third annual exhibition at the Coldstream
Gallery her recent work is, as ever,

Ken Spencer & Eve Kime
Ken Spencers landscapes are concerned

colour and composition, he expertly

Northumbria.
Also a landscape artist, Eve Kime is more
concerned with pattern. Her canvases are
full of vigour and colour, verging on the
abstract.
OCTOBER 4-29
Zana Juppenlatz & Branwen Lloyd
This is a rare opportunity to see original work
by these two sisters. The warm tones of
Zanas work features Northumbrian coastal
scenes, expansive skies and shimmering
water. Branwen is more fanciful and romantic
and has a diverse, eclectic collection of

CLIENCE STUDIO
ONGOING
Angela Lawrence
Clience Studio owner Angela Lawrence
specialises in distinctive Scottish landscapes
and seascapes, notably from Galloway. Her
popular style has a freshness of colour and
a strong sense of atmosphere which rings
true with visitors to the area.
A recent project on Lewis and Harris in the
Outer Hebrides has inspired her new work,
which will be appearing throughout the year
following a successful solo exhibition at
Helmsley Art Centre in York. Some of this
new work revels in the characteristics and
movement of the sea in both calm and Evening calm, Carrick
turbulent mood, while other paintings
encapsulate the serene mood of the
beaches and turquoise sea around the isles.
Angela accepts commissions, which have
included a wide range in both size and
subject matter from Britain and abroad. You
can also fnd her paintings in galleries
throughout Scotland and elsewhere.
Housing original oils, watercolours and
prints, the gallery can be easily found
beneath the clock tower in the main street
of Castle Douglas.

DESIGNS GALLERY & CAFE
Designs Gallery and Cafe opened 15
years ago and has become one of
southwest Scotlands leading
independent galleries for contemporary
applied art with an intriguing collection
of jewellery by leading designers as well
as sculpture, ceramics and studio glass.
Situated within reach of the beautiful
Galloway hills and coast, the venue
provides a light and spacious area in
which to view changing collections and
regular exhibitions of new work and
browse books, prints, cards and gifts.
Downstairs the cafe serves excellent
food, using simple and locally produced
ingredients. It is the ideal place to relax,
read the papers, enjoy coffees and
speciality teas and sample from a wide menu
of home cooking.
SEPTEMBER 17-NOVEMBER 5
The Swallow & the Hare Paul Young,
Ceramics & Lizzie Farey, Willow Sculpture
Leaving behind the traditional techniques she
once used, Lizzie Farey has found a new
freedom in the organic, sculptural forms which
have emerged as she explores an affnity with
nature.
Ceramics have been a part of Paul Youngs
creative heart and profession for over 25
years. During this time he has been drawn
ever closer to the traditions of English
earthenware, slipware and European folk art.
Appearing both naive and sophisticated in its
execution, the work has a charm and honesty
which combines with the sheer joy of being
alive.

THREAVE GARDENS
An impressive, 64 acre garden in Castle
Douglas, Threave Gardens is a beautiful,
year-round venue, with its formal gardens
providing an impressive backdrop for
exhibiting sculpture. There is also a
restaurant and shop, picnic area, plant
sales, a bird hide and a wildfowl reserve.
From this August and for the frst time,
Threave will host a permanent exhibition of
work by some of Dumfries and Galloways
fnest sculptors, providing a rare
opportunity to purchase and commission
original pieces. The exhibition will be
launched with a private view on Saturday
August 27, 4-6pm.
Lucianne Lassalle
Lucianne Lassalle focuses on fgurative
sculpture, but is constantly pushing
boundaries and challenging traditional
forms, while celebrating the beauty of the
human form. Also a ceramist and painter,
Lucianne uses clay, bronze casts and resin
to create work which is powerful and
expressive and inherently fexible as a
vehicle to inspire.
She explains: I see the human body as
the interface between the mental,
emotional and spiritual processes inside
and the external manifestation of these in
the world. I am fascinated by the beauty of
the human form, impelled and inspired to
make sculpture. Luciannes work sells in
galleries in London, Canada, the USA and
Europe
Peter Dowden
Using a variety of locally sourced stone,
Peter Dowden creates work dictated by the
properties of the stone. Peter carves in the
traditional manner, using hand tools, and
has built up an affnity with the stone which
he respects when pushing the limits of
carving.
Dawn Rhodes
Working with metal, Dawn Rhodes creates
pieces which are inspired by the local
landscape. Her Red Kite piece celebrates
the successful return of the bird to the
area.
Andy Breen
Andy Breen carves with locally sourced
wood. Keen to pass on his skills as a wood
sculptor to younger generations, he is
happy to demonstrate how he works.
Willie Wight
Willie Wight is inspired by the natural forms
which manifest themselves in Dumfries and
Galloway. His free form carving allows him
to demonstrate his love of the local area.

perspex or glass, there seems to be so much
more to them than a mere depiction of a
landscape. Like Turner, Frame is always
chasing the ether of atmosphere, and the trees
themselves appear to take on human qualities.
Describing himself as magpie in his
approach to his art, Frame is also a romantic in
the way he engages his artistic sensibility,
always striving to strip away the heaviness of a
scene, be it in a landscape or fgurative
painting.

William Miller Frazer RSA (1864-
1961) Anniversary Exhibition
Anyone who has visited Scotlands
traditional art galleries over the years
will no doubt be familiar with the
name, if not the work, of William
Miller Frazer. His prolifc landscape
work is known for its impressionist
style, capturing the sentiment and
mood of rural days of the late 19th
and early 20th centuries.
For the 2011 Festival Exhibition the
Anthony Woodd Gallery features scenes by
Frazer, including from East Lothian,
Perthshire, Venice and the English Fens.
The variety of his landscapes refects his
travels and his love of the countryside,
ranging from the gentleness of an East
Lothian farm in summer to the snowy winter
moorlands of Perthshire.
These Scottish works are not huge,
romantic interpretations of the drama of the
scenery, but rather smaller, intimate

Five Centuries of Scottish Portraiture
This exhibition begins with David
Allans The Origin of Painting, which
places portraiture at the centre of the
story of art since the Renaissance.
Among the earliest portraits featured
is The Earl and Countess of Wigton
(1625) by Adam de Colone.
Allan Ramsay affrmed the place of
portraiture at the heart of the Scottish
Enlightenment, as demonstrated in
the three lady portraits shown. David
Martin was Ramsays pupil and he is
represented by the portrait of Charles
Kerr of Calderbank.
Sir Henry Raeburn, whose portrait of
Alexander Munro is one of the outstanding
pieces in the exhibition, is also shown as
well as his successor, John Watson Gordon,
with an oval portrait of Adam Wilson.
Portraiture survived the competition of
photography at the turn of the 20th century
as the art form of choice, as refected in the

Richard Demarco &
Joseph Beuys
Richard Demarco
collaborated with Joseph
Beuys over a period of 16
years (from 1970 to 1986)
after frst meeting him in
Dsseldorf. Demarco invited
Beuys to Scotland, together
with 34 other artists
identifed with Dsseldorf,
which was then still in West Germany and
divided from East Germany by the Iron Curtain.
Joseph Beuys was the frst of these artists to
visit Scotland, which he regarded as the
heartland of the Celtic world. He was therefore
willing to explore the fabled world of The Road
to The Isles from Edinburgh towards the
legendary Hebridean land of Fingal and his son,
Ossian, which had inspired Shakespeare to
write Macbeth.
The journey resulted in what is regarded as a
Beuysian masterwork, Celtic Kinloch Rannoch:
Joseph Beuys and Richard Demarco at Edinburgh
College of Art, 1970
The Scottish Symphony. Beuys returned to
Scotland seven more times to fnd inspiration in
what he regarded as the key to Celtic Europe.
This exhibition consists of works by Beuys
inspired by Scotland along with watercolours by
Richard Demarco and what has been recently
defned as his event photography.
Demarcos contribution reveals the nodal
points on what he now calls The Road to
Meikle Seggie, a road travelled through many
centuries by the followers of Saint Columba
and the Roman legionaries.
The exhibition therefore tells the story of how
Beuys was inspired by the reality of the
Romano-Celtic cultural heritage of Europe,
while Demarcos watercolours, both
townscapes and landscapes, and event
photographs are inspired by what is easily
identifed as the drovers road.

Simonides: Body Bags - Photographs by
Norman McBeath. Texts by Robert
Crawford.
Simonidess best works are body bags.
Zipped into them is what is left of human
lives. This installation is a collaboration
between one of the countrys leading poets,
Robert Crawford, and the highly acclaimed
photographer Norman McBeath.
The installation connects writing from over
2,000 years ago with contemporary wars in
the Middle East and acts of remembrance.
Raising questions about the status of a so-
called dead language, it also invokes issues
such as counter-terrorism measures and
ordinary peoples experiences during
conficts.
It features black and white photographs
paired with Scots (and English) translations of
epitaphs by the ancient Greek poet
Simonides. These epitaphs were written for
civilians and soldiers killed during the Persian
Wars (492-449 B.C.) in celebrated battles
such as Thermopylae and Salamis. The texts
have a short, sometimes fragmentary
eloquence. Classical sculptures from
Edinburgh College of Arts historic cast
collection feature in the installation.
Links between ancient and modern are
highlighted and given original and elegant
expression through exquisite
black and white photographs
by Norman McBeath. These
square format, contemplative
studies are not war
photographs, but scenes from
everyday life, details of which
thread through much of
Simonidess work.
They deliberately avoid any
descriptive or literal link to the
texts; the relationship
between photograph and
epitaph is evocative and
tangential. A beautifully
produced hardback book,
Simonides, containing 25
black and white photographs
and paired texts, will be
available.

The Northern Renaissance: Drer to Holbein
This new exhibition brings together over 100
paintings, drawings, prints, manuscripts,
miniatures and sculptures by the greatest
Northern European artists of the 15th and 16th
centuries, including Albrecht Drer, Lucas
Cranach the Elder and Hans Holbein the Younger.
It celebrates the art of the Northern
Renaissance, a period defned by dramatic
changes, when monarchs vied for territorial
power, religious reformers questioned the central
tenets of the Church and scholars sought greater
understanding of their world. Artists responded to
their changing surroundings by producing works
of great ingenuity and beauty.
The rivalry among the northern courts to attract
the best artists was ferce. In 1519 Francis I
secured the services of Leonardo da Vinci as
court artist, and one of Leonardos costume
designs for a masquerade (c.1517-18) is
included in the exhibition.
In England, Hans Holbein the Younger became
Painter to the King by 1536 and produced
remarkably perceptive depictions of members of
Henry VIIIs court. Holbeins preparatory drawings
of fgures such as Sir Henry Guildford will go on
display alongside magnifcent fnished portraits.
The circulation of ideas was a crucial factor in
the religious and social debate of the period. The
printing press, invented in Germany around
1450, allowed books and pamphlets to be
disseminated in large numbers, and signifcant
works such as Thomas Mores Utopia, illustrated
by Hans Holbein the Younger, were read across
Europe.
Albrecht Drer, the greatest printmaker of the
period, also found a ready market for his
engravings and woodcuts, achieving
considerable fame and infuence in Europe and
beyond. In 1498 he produced the frst of his
three highly successful books, The Apocalypse,
which was illustrated by 15 dramatic woodcut
illustrations.
At the heart of the Northern Renaissance was
the challenge to the teachings of the Catholic
Church initiated by Martin Luther. In response,
the art of northern Europe began to move from
emotive religious scenes to secular subjects such
as portraiture and mythology.
The German artist Lucas Cranach, infuenced
by his patron Frederick the Wise of Saxony, the
protector of Luther, developed a range of
paintings of mythological subjects, including his
outstanding Apollo and Diana (c.1526).
Clockwise from top left:

lansquenet, c.1517-18
Hans Holbein the Younger, Sir Henry
Guildford, 1527
Albrecht Drer, Study of a Greyhound,
c.1500-1501
Portraits were designed largely to convey the
status of the sitter, but could also bear witness to
the reversal of fortunes. Francois Clouets two
portraits of Mary, Queen of Scots, produced just
two years apart (c.1558 and c.1560-61),
dramatically highlight her change in status from a
16-year-old girl about to be married to the future
Francis II to a widow in white mourning who has
lost the French crown.
Growing prosperity meant that increasingly
paintings could be afforded by rich merchants. In
1532 Holbein painted several portraits of the
German merchants living in the walled business
enclave known as the London Steelyard, among
them a striking portrait of the 23-year-old Derich
Born.

Enigmatic objects stumbled
upon in the outdoors speak
eloquently of the passing of
time. This exhibition brings
together a collection of
contemporary ceramics by
artists who use lost or
abandoned fragments in the
landscape to develop evocative
works of art with one of the
earths oldest materials. It
includes beautiful and mysterious work by
Jenny Pope, Lorna Fraser, Lorraine Robson,

Nicky Bird: Archaeology of the Ordinary
Nicky Bird has been researching the multiple
histories of rural lives throughout East
Lothian. Looking at itinerant farm workers
who have left their mark on the architecture
and landscape of the region, her unique
practice brings oral histories to life through
the creation of fascinating and resonant works
of art. Here she has used a series of
abandoned cottages to form the basis of an
intriguing new body of poignant and
illuminating work.

TIPPECANOE GALLERY
Tippecanoe Gallery (Dunbar) and
Tippecanoe (North Berwick and Portree,
Isle of Skye) are galleries and gift shops
by the sea with a distinct style of their
own.
The summer stock of pictures, prints
and gifts are in the shops. For the
holiday season the galleries have
concentrated on showing a range of well
priced, framed prints by artists such as
Pam Carter, John Lowrie Morrison,
Alison Young and William Green. Most
prices range from 20 to 150 and
include many local landscapes.
The galleries have also sourced A3 size
prints from the National Railways Museum
Archives. Scottish Railway posters from the
1920s and 1930s are superb examples of
poster art. Posters for destinations such as
Dunbar, North Berwick and Edinburgh were
commissioned from or submitted by some of
the best commercial artists of the day,
including E. Lander, H. G. Gawthorn, F.
Newbould and, most famously, Norman
Wilkinson.

BURGH HALLS
AUGUST 12-NOVEMBER 13
The Linlithgow Story
This exhibition is a culmination of years of
work and effort from various contributors to the
life, history and refurbishment of the Linlithgow
Burgh Halls.
Delve into the creative processes which
brought their concepts to life, with displays
from Malcolm Fraser Architects and the artists
recently commissioned to produce new
artwork for the building. These include 60
unique Delft tiles by Douglas Watson Studios,
depicting imagery connected with the town.
Two new Michael McVeigh paintings inject life
back into the focal freplace overmantles in the
Bailie Hardie Hall, and there are new etchings
and early sketches by Michael showing his
ideas for capturing the spirit of Linlithgow.
A series of classic reproduction prints depicts
the changes in the building from the early
1800s to the mid-1900s, capturing moments
of the Marches procession and a reproduction
of Linlithgow Palace 1901 by J. M. W. Turner.
Sat Sep 17 Printmaking for Dreams. Based on
the Chagall-like work of Michael McVeigh, this

McTaggarts Scottish
Shorelines: Paintings
from East and West
St Andrews Museum
hosts a sea-themed
selection from Fife
Councils wonderful
collection of paintings by
the renowned Scottish
artist Wiliam McTaggart
(1835-1910). This show
focuses on McTaggarts
shoreline paintings,
fascinating images of the east and west coast
of Scotland that the artist produced throughout
his life.
Every year McTaggart went to the sea.
Sometimes he returned home to the west
coast and the peninsula of Kintyre, but the east
coast drew him too - not surprisingly, as he
spent his adult life in or near Edinburgh.
He created a stunning range of paintings on
these annual pilgrimages, and it is ftting that
you can enjoy them here today in St Andrews -
so close to the sea which inspired him.

Live Your Questions Now
With the focus of survey
shows predominantly on
emergent artists in their
twenties and thirties, what
can we learn from an
earlier generation of
contemporary visual
artists?
This survey exhibition of
Scottish, UK and
international contemporary
artists over 60 years old
includes Glasgow author
and illustrator Alasdair Gray
along with Sam Ainsley,
The exhibition title is inspired by a quote
from Rainer Maria Rilkes Letters to a young
poet (1934), in which he wrote: Live the
questions now. Perhaps you will then
gradually, without noticing it, live along some
distant day into the answer.

Kate Henderson: Fleeting Shadows, Bright
Sunshine
Kate Hendersons frst solo exhibition in
Glasgow reveals a diverse body of work in
drawing, painting and mixed media glass
which refects her passion for texture, colour
and light.
Trained in stained glass, Kate feeds her
interest in ecclesiastical architecture through
a series of drawings and paintings inspired
by cathedrals, including Glasgows, in which
she focuses on the quality of light
surrounding the building both inside and out.
Also on display is a series of mixed media
pieces incorporating her own handwriting
and referring to her daily experiences as
artist, mother and daughter.
Kates works have been described as
deeply personal and exquisitely moving.
They have featured in major glass shows in
Britain and her stained glass pieces are
installed in public and private buildings
across Scotland. Elected a professional
member of the Society of Scottish Artists,
she also exhibits with the Royal Glasgow
Institute of the Fine Arts and the Royal
Society of Painters in Watercolour.

Mohan Naik
This is a unique opportunity to see the
work of an artist who has not exhibited
in the UK before now. Mohan Naik
lives and works in Goa as a full-time
artist. His colourful canvases of village
life in India refect his belief in mans
relationship with nature.
SEPTEMBER 9-OCTOBER 8
Andy Cross
Although a frequent exhibitor at
Frames, this is Andy Crosss frst solo
show at the gallery and a wonderful
opportunity to see a wide collection of his
landscapes and still lifes. Andy aims to capture
the atmosphere of his subject matter with
exciting contrasts, from a strong sunlit scene
in Provence to a damp, dreich Scottish
landscape.
Frances Crawford
Strathdon-based Francis Crawfords paintings
use a successive layering of transparent glazes
of oil paint and glazing medium to create a
depth and vibrancy of colour in her work.

PERTH MUSEUM AND ART
GALLERY
Contemporary art and crafts take centre stage
this summer with a series of exhibitions
featuring the work of local, national and
international artists.
UNTIL DECEMBER 23
Trove
This ground-breaking collaboration with the
Scottish Glass Society reveals the hidden
treasures of the museums reserve
collections. Twenty fve emerging and
established glass artists were invited to explore
a variety of historical artefacts which are not
currently on display. Their response is a
stimulating, diverse and vibrant collection of
glass art encompassing a broad range of
techniques and applications. Displayed
alongside the object which inspired each
piece, these new works challenge conventional
museum interpretation.
This selling exhibition is supported by the
Trove Lectures, beginning September 12, a
series of nine talks exploring the partnership of
curator and artist and revealing the creative
Emma Butler-Cole Aiken, Searching (detail), 2011
process and history behind individual displays.
UNTIL OCTOBER 15
Ronald Forbes: De Rerum Natura (The
Nature of Things)
This Dundee-based artists paintings, digital
collage and flm work are inspired by his
residency at the Scottish Crop Research
Institute. The exhibition brings together art and
science and explores biblical themes and
Greek myths.

The museums

has been
enhanced with the
recent acquisition
of A Very Large
Fennel Vase by
Kate Malone.
Similar in spirit to
the gourd pots
which form a

piece offers a new
twist on a familiar
theme. On display until October 1, accompanied
by a short film about the artists work.
