FLUID MECHANICS - HOMEWORK DUE DATE: PARTIAL EXAM DAY. Problem 1. The density of gold is 19.28 g/cm3.

What is the volume of a gold crown that weighs 10,000 N when the crown is fully submersed in water at STP (Standard Temperature and Pressure). Problem 2. An air bubble in glycerin has a diameter of 2000 m. What is the pressure difference across the surface of this bubble due to surface tension? Problem 3. The dynamic viscosity of water at 20C is 1.00 X 10- 3 N-s/m2, and the viscosity at 40C is 6.53 X 10 -4 N-s/m2. Using Eq. = Ceb/T, estimate the viscosity at 30C. Problem 4. Air enters a duct, of diameter D = 25 mm, through a well-rounded inlet with uniform speed, U1 = 0:870 m/s. At a downstream section where L = 2:25 m, the fully developed velocity profile is

( ) .

The pressure drop between these sections is p1 - p2 = 1:92 N/m . Find the total force of friction exerted by the tube on the air.

Problem 5. Suppose that glycerin is flowing (T = 20C) and that the pressure gradient dpldx is - 1.6 kN/m3. What are the velocity and shear stress at a distance of 12 mm from the wall if the space B between the walls is 5.0 cm? What are the shear stress and velocity at the wall? The velocity distribution for viscous flow between stationary plates is

Problem 6. This problem involves a cylinder falling inside a pipe that is filled with oil, as depicted in the figure. The small space between the cylinder and the pipe is lubricated with an oil film that has viscosity . Derive a formula for the steady rate of descent of a cylinder with weight w; diameter d, and length l sliding inside a vertical smooth pipe that has inside diameter D. Assume that the cylinder is concentric with the pipe as it falls. Use the general formula to find the rate of descent of a cylinder 100 mm in diameter that slides inside a 100.5 mm pipe. The cylinder is 200 mm long and weighs 15 N. The lubricant is SA.E 20W oil at 10C.

Problem 7. The closed tank shown in the figure is filled with water and is 5 ft long. The pressure gage on the tank reads 7 psi. Determine: (a) the height, h, in the open water column, (b) the gage pressure acting on the bottom tank surface AB, and (c) the absolute pressure of the air in the top of the tank if the local atmospheric pressure is 14.7 psia.

Problem 8. The Crosby gage tester shown in the figures is used to calibrate or to test pressure gages. When the weights and the piston together weigh 140 N, the gage being testes indicates 200 kPa. If the piston diameter is 30 mm, what percentage of error exists in the gage?

Problem 9. Two square gates close two openings in a conduit connected to an open tank of water as shown in Fig. P2.94. When the water depth, h, reaches 5 m it is desired that both gates open at the same time. Determine the weight of the homogeneous horizontal gate and the horizontal force, R, acting on the vertical gate that is required to keep the gates closed until this depth is reached. The weight of the vertical gate is negligible, and both gates are hinged at one end as shown. Friction in the hinges is negligible.

Problem 10. A sluice gate is in the form of a circular arc of radius 6 m as shown in Fig. 2.21. Calculate the magnitude and direction of the resultant force on the gate, and the location with respect to O of a point of its line of action.
