1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Definition of Open Source Software Open source software is computer software that is distributed along with its source code - the code that is used to create the software - under a special software license. The license allows users to use, change and improve the software's source code, and to redistribute the software either before or after it has been modified. If you make any modifications to the source code, one of the conditions of open source is that you have to provide information to other developers about what has been changed, and how. The software that is created as a result of modifications to the source code may or may not be made available for free. 1.2 Definition of Hardware Computer hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer and related devices. Internal hardware devices include motherboards, hard drives, and RAM. External hardware devices include monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, and scanners. The internal hardware parts of a computer are often referred to as components, while external hardware devices are usually called peripherals. Together, they all fall under the category of computer hardware. Software, on the other hand, consists of the programs and applications that run on computers. Because software runs on computer hardware, software programs often have system requirements that list the minimum hardware required for the software to run. 1.3 Definition of Software Computer software is a general term that describes computer programs. Related terms such as software programs, applications, scripts, and instruction sets all fall under the category of computer software. Therefore, installing new programs or applications on your computer is synonymous with installing new software on your computer. Software can be difficult to describe because it is "virtual," or not physical like computer hardware. Instead, software consists of lines of code written by computer programmers that have been compiled into a computer program. Software programs are stored as binary data that is copied to a computer's hard drive, when it is installed. Since software is virtual and does not take up any physical space, it is much easier (and often cheaper) to upgrade than computer hardware. While at its most basic level, software consists of binary data, CD-ROMs, DVDs, and other types of media that are used to distribute software can also be called software. Therefore, when you buy a software program, it often comes on a disc, which is a physical means of storing the software.

2.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEM

2.1 Meaning of Open Source Operating System An open source application software is something for which the source code is available for download and anybody can modify it and release subsequent versions of the same provided they mention the version of the source using which they modified. 2.2 Examples of Open Source Operating System 2.2.1OpenSolaris OpenSolaris is derived from the Unix System V Release 4 codebase, although with significant modifications made by Sun since it bought out the rights to the codebase in 1994. It is the only open source System V derivative available. Open sourced components are snapshots of the latest Solaris release under development.

2.2.2OpenDarwin A free software multi-platform Unix-like operating system based on Apple Computer's Darwin operating system. Founded in April 2002 by Apple Computer and Internet Systems Consortium, the goal of the OpenDarwin.org project was to create an independent branch of the Darwin operating system that increases collaboration between Apple developers and the free software/open source community. Apple theoretically benefited from the project because improvements to OpenDarwin would be incorporated into Darwin releases; and the free/open source community benefits since it was given complete control over its own operating system, which could then be used in free software distributions such as GNU-Darwin.

3.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE

3.1 Meaning of Open Source Application Software Open source application software is computer software that is available in source code form for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that permits users to study,
4

change, and improve the software. 3.2 Examples of Open Source Application Software 3.2.1OpenOffice.org A free office suite of applications available for many different operating systems including Linux, Microsoft Windows, Solaris, OpenVMS, IRIX and Mac OS X. It supports the OpenDocument standard for data interchange. OpenOffice.org is based on StarOffice, an office suite developed by StarDivision and acquired by Sun Microsystems in August 1999. The source code of the suite was released in July 2000 with the aim of reducing the dominant market share of Microsoft Office by providing a free, open and high-quality alternative. OpenOffice.org is free software, available under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL). The project and software are informally referred to as "Open Office", but project organizers report that this term is a trademark held by another party, requiring them to adopt "OpenOffice.org" as its formal name, and abbreviated as OOo or OO.o . 3.2.2NeoOffice NeoOffice is a fork of the free/open source OpenOffice.org office suite that is ported to Mac OS X. It implements nearly all of the features of the corresponding OpenOffice.org version, including a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation program, and graphics program. It is developed by Planamesa Software, and uses Java technology to integrate OpenOffice.org 'originally developed for Solaris and Linux' with the Aqua interface of Mac OS X. OpenOffice.org was originally released under both the LGPL and SISSL; it is now released solely under the LGPL

5.0 PERVASIVE COMPUTING

5.1 Meaning Of Pervasive Computing Refers to the use of computers in everyday life, including PDAs, smartphones and
8

other mobile devices. It also refers to computers contained in commonplace objects such as cars and appliances and implies that people are unaware of their presence. 5.2 Examples Of Pervasive Computing 5.2.1ASUS Eee Pad 101TC

The Eee Pad 101TC is in some respects a whole different kettle of fish to its bigger brother. It's not just the 10 inches of glass that follows in the iPad's footsteps, but also the metal sleeve around the edge now. Either way, this has become an aesthetically acceptable style and the textured backside also looks good and adds grip, however in the early sample on show the quality of manufacture still needs some tweaking around the edges.

6.0 CONCLUSION
Open Source can be used by anyone and because it has no copyright claims, so users are free to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms. Pervasive Computing is to make our lives easier because we can interact with computers. Besides that, we can easily give the computer commands and the computer will grant your wish.
