New Section University Liaison Officer

The ASME Northern Alberta Section is pleased to announce that Rong Long has joined the Section executive as university liaison officer in the spring 2013. Rong Long is an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta. Prior to his current position, he was a research associate at University of Colorado at Boulder and a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University. He received his Ph.D. degree in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Cornell University in 2010 and his B.S. degree in the same field from University of Science and Technology of China in 2006. His research interests include: large deformation and fracture of soft materials, cell mechanics and biomaterials, and contact mechanics and adhesion.

April Technical Dinner Meeting

3D Plant Laser Measurement

Pierre Mertiny (section chair, left) thanking Matthew Craig. Matthew Craig, North America Business Development Manager for LFM Software Limited, gave an excellent presentation on 3D data capture. Matthew covered the history of this technology along with current trends and future research and development. Various technologies used for 3D data capture were described such as photo and laser. Matthew also provided an overview of what is required to develop a successful 3D data capture procedure. Successful 3D measurement is a function of knowing the limitations of the technology and equipment, and having a well thought out procedure. 3D laser measurement can be accurate to less than 1 mm when done properly. There are opportunities for significant cost savings when using 3D laser measurement to perform as-building of existing equipment. This cost savings is not just realized from the reduction of time required to perform the actual as-building, but also from a reduction in re-work for any plant modifications since the design work was based on accurate site information. In addition, using 3D data capture systems can eliminate safety risks such as falls, working near operating equipment, etc., that can be associated with asbuilding tasks. Finally, Matthew wrapped up with an example of using this technology in the construction phase which could apply to both brown field and green field projects. By importing design information into the 3D data capture system, it can then be used essentially in reverse to accurately locate critical equipment. As a result, construction costs can be significantly reduced by eliminated almost all rework. As this technology matures, more applications will be found. And, common with emerging technologies, as equipment sizes and costs continue to reduce 3D data capture will more and more become a viable option. (DS)
